Bethesda: The hair in Skyrim looks absolutely awful, I'm sor

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:21 pm

So does the hair of Rick Astley, doesn't mean it's not real(istic).

LOL!
I hope the hair in those stills is not final and/or relevant for the in game characters, I will be playing this in 2011 and I expect no less than Geralt of Rivia's hair (released in 2007).

batman- arkham asylum has fantastic hair...

the problem is not the texture, but the mesh (and the lack of my beloved cloth physics)

Maybe they are going to fix that, there are still months of development

If snow is gonna build and all that stuff to do with the weather I don't think they'll let the hair go astray, i'm sure it will be freeflow, it's in the engine.

Yes, its pretty bad. Particularly in screenshot #2 which....what the fish? I didn't even realize at first that that yellow thing was actually the guys head. I'm sure there will be hair mods fairly quickly after release but I'd prefer not having to rely on them.

Western developers simply can't do hair very well. It's the reason the vast majority of games have protagonists that look like this:

Skyrim doesn't look nearly as bad as Dragon Age 2's hair at least.

I play as an Argonian and I have friggin' spikes on my head. I don't care about hair that much, since it would only bother me if my own player model had hideous hair.

I'd rather have that then a bunch of exaggerated emo kid Japanese [censored] hairstyles with massive spikes and [censored].

OP, your the sanest person I've seen here. people come in with their bold, sweeping statements....

Honestly, the OP had some pretty bold, sweeping statements too. That it's "horrible", "what is this 1996", etc, etc, etc.

There's hyperbole enough to go around on all sides.

-------

My personal thoughts....

I can't say "I don't care" because hair mods are one of the first things I looked for for OB / FO3 / FO:NV. (Note, I tend to skip the more fanciful concoctions - they're a bit wacky, and the long things clip terribly. I don't have much in the way of character pics online... My most common haircut in FO3 is Josef Gray's Kozaburo mod. Ironically, the http://www.fallout3nexus.com/imageshare/images/492029-1271208211.jpg of that happens to be also wearing an FF13 armor mod. :whistling: )

So, yeah. I'll probably be looking for new hair. But I also don't think that the hair shown in those other pictures (at least 1 & 3. 2 is hard to tell, it's such an odd angle & not moving) is "horrible". It's certainly an improvement from OB and many of FO3's hairs.

I didn't notice any of these until you pointed them out, and now I can't not notice them.

3 looks really bad imo, since that screenshot was used in GI as "Hey, look at how good the NPCs look", and the hair on her head to me looks like a wig lol. It looks like it is a bit askew.

I'm often wondering why western developers can't do good looking hair.
In JRPGs long, flowing, beautiful hair that moves with the wind is standard since years, and western games..well..yes, like in the link you posted ;).

The hair doesn't have to move physically correct. It just should be a bit dynamic.

Sorry, but if you people are complaining about the hair, then Bethesda is doing something right.

wait, no I think I get it now. You think that if people are moaning about the hair its a sign that everything else is all good.

I agree completly. Bethesda are amazing develapers. The best, in my opinion.

But... the hair is still pretty hard on the eyes.

Edit:

But... screen shot 2.

Just because they don't have access to modern medicine doesn't mean their hair shouldn't behave or look like real hair. Not every character in the game needs to be attractive, but when they don't look realistic (And this is not because of a stylistic choice, obviously, if the game was never meant to look realistic, we don't need the characters to.) then it looks kind of strange.

Well I was just saying real looking hair wouldn't end up look all that great, if you know what I mean. Like a real person with real hair not treated with products and what not is going to look not so great. If people want the art style to have people look like an air brushed super model then yeah I see what you mean about that kind of realistic if that's what we'll call it.

Although the second screen shot sort of looks like it's out of Oblivion I think the other two look amazing. Of course I started playing video games when hair was a very few blocks of pixels to represent it so I tend to appreciate how most modern graphics look.

I'm trying not to laugh about it but I think the OP was making an april fools post to start with.

And all those games make up every western developer? They're more lack of character design than "Hair is just so darn hard to do." Since a shaved or bold head seems to say, "Hey I'm a badass, don't mess with me."

In JRPGs long, flowing, beautiful hair that moves with the wind is standard since years, and western games..well..yes, like in the link you posted

JRPG's are, as Todd mentioned. Over-fantastical. In reality nobody is going to find enough time to make their hair silky smooth and WRPG's tend to focus more on reality, I wouldn't expect to play a game about Vikings and be amazed by how well their hair flows in the wind. They're Vikings, they're warriors! They don't care about hair!

Right now I'm reserving judgement with hair in Skyrim, not too fussed at the moment but the closer we get to release and see a more final build of the game. Then maybe I'll have a stronger opinion on the hair.

I don't care about hair that much.. from what I've seen they did a good enough job.

This is a game where you run around in first person mode killing things with a sword. Not the Elder scrolls: Extreme Hairstylists.

They fixed almost every problem from previous games as far as I can tell. Including the ugly Oblivion faces.

That said.. if you really can't stand the thought that your characters hair isn't real enough looking...

1) a mod will fix it

2) make a bald guy

3) play in first person

4) don't play at all

That screenshot is cherry picking ... its just a fact that bald/short hair is popular right now, so games reflect that. It has nothing to do with their inability to make hair. LOL

We aint talking silky smooth locks of hair here. Were talking greesy tattered messy dirty hair, or at best, presentably tamed hair. Not hair that is a blonde head morphing worm...

You're right, it has to be more realistic...but: http://www.actionmoviefreak.com/images/Bad_Ass/arnold-conan-the-barbarian.jpg

I'm not a huge graphics person, but I would have to agree that the hair does look pretty bad. I'm not saying its a deal breaker by any means, it just means the hair is a little off. They have a few months to touch up a few things, but I honestly wouldn't care if they focused on getting spell creation and werewolves into the game before they attempt to improve the hair. Hair is on the bottom of my priority list.

I'm pretty sure it is. It's easier to model, saves up on polygon use, and you don't have to spend any time animating it right. Even Cliffy B said the same thing in an interview where he coined the phrase "bald space marine".

They've also got a really simple "in-universe" explanation for it: it's practical. If you're hunting aliens in your space armour(?), any kind of hair is pretty unnecessary, and space marines usually seem like quite practical fellows.

It's only the fantasy heroes and steam/cyberpunk dudes who get to go crazy with fashion and hairstyles, generally.
