General issues, are they common?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:03 am

Hey everyone,

figured i should ask on the official forum.

Got the game after the great game FO3 was, and ?=im likin git a lot so far, but I′m having serious issues with it. It crashes anywhere between 5 minutes from starting, to hours after it′s been running. Not even constant.
I′ve had it all: CTDs are very common, somewhat common the "display driver stops responding", I've gotten save games corrupted twice, and one BSOD. Now, the computer is new, built it not long ago, so figured it could be hardware issues. Left the PC running stress tests that ranged from the common OCCT to close to 15 hours of prime 95/sp2004 to test RAM and CPU, and close to 6 hours FurMark/MSI kombustor to stress GPU. Rock solid. If that wasn't enough, more demanding games run butter smooth, no issues whatsoever (mass effect 2, starcraft 2, F1 2010, Black Ops, etc...). Last factor is the game itself.

Are those issues common? Guess saying that 75%-80% of the times it crashes, freezes, and that single BSOD happened while loading the game or travelling. That BSOD goes hand in hand with one of the times the game corrupted the save game (costing me 10 hours of gameplay...), the other one was a crash while loading.

Also, where do I download the patches? Steam is all well and good, but I′ve always liked to have the stand alone installers so I dont have to redownload them each time I reinstall the game...

Thanks!

Can′t edit my first post for some reason...

if it helps at anything, PC specs are:

AMD Phenom II 965BE
2x2GB DDR3-1600 RAM
890GX based motherboard
MSI GTX460 1GB

Thanks.

Please post your DXdiag.

Patching is done automatically through Steam.

The CTD's are pretty common. I have them myself and there are enough topics about it.
The save game corruption was also common, but that was before the 1.2 patch. I don't know if the game still corrupts post-patch.
*Note: I was able to load a corrupted save after the 1.2 patch.*
There is no official way to download the individual patches as far as I know. You install the game and update with steam.
If you are afraid you will have to download patches again later, then here is a tip. You can make a backup of every game you have on steam. ;)

For me you still have to go "online" in order to use the backup you created, but it's true you don't have to download.

The CTD's are definitely common....but some people have them a lot less often or a lot more often than others. For me they've also been unpredictable, where I might go hours and hours without a CTD but then get three in 30 minutes. The first week was the worst, but after I started new characters it's become more reliable. I turned off all auto-saving and disabled my pc's virtual memory (I have i7-920/6GB RAM which runs the game+fraps just fine w/out any vm) and that felt like it helped a lot too.

The nvidia FPS issue still remains for me tho, even w/the latest patch/drivers. Still need to use the .dll fix.

Could you elaborate on that please? I also have an nvidia GPU, and feels sluggish at times. Went ahead and used an OSD app, and realized that the GPU sets itself at a power state that is not a 3D one (clocks running at significantly lower frequencies) during New Vegas runs. Where can I get that fix?

Never mind, found this!:

This is aimed specifically to help those with NVIDIA video cards. Note that if you do NOT have this issue, it has been reported that older drives don't have this problem with the game, and that newer drivers do play the game without issue at this given time (October 19th, 2010). This WILL be fixed so don't feel as if you will never be able to update your drivers again. On the contrary, as mentioned above, it will improve your performance eventually once more updates come out.

1. Add a custom NVIDIA Game / Applications profile for "Fallout: New Vegas"
2. For that profile, change the "Power Management" from "Adaptive" to "Max Performance"
That *should* fix your problem. For those having trouble locating this feature, go to--

My Computer -> Control Panel -> NVIDIA Control Panel -- and it's under "Manage 3D Settings"

Friend, you don't need any d3d9.dll 'fix'.
The game runs just fine without it...
If the game feels 'sluggish' you should make sure you're not running vsync.
Also, make sure your nVidia Control Panel is set to all high-performance or application-controlled settings, and not forcing vsync, AA or AF.
With no vsync, no AA, reasonable AF and settings, my own game runs fantastic and looks great...
And we have the same vidcard,
Regards

Try a clean boot, and don't overwrite saves.

Some of us don't feel as if running with no AA etc. = "runs great"...that just means for some reason the game can't run well on higher settings so you're lowering everything to make it run smoothly, when (I feel) I shouldn't have to in my case. I like my games to be on higher settings, I don't think it "looks great" at low settings....that's my preference, and my system should be able to handle it. It's not an issue of overall system-power in my case, so it's probably a driver issue or something akin to that. I'm not blaming the game per se, it's just how trying to program for zillions of computer configurations can be and always will be.

I can run the game "fine" overall without the .dll "fix" if I run at 2AA/4AF (I never use vsync) and a lot of the in-game display settings set to about half, but even so there are many places/areas where I'll be running around getting 80FPS and suddenly it drops to 15fps and then up then down then up then down. It's maddening and sluggish. This is not during combat, and it's not always when around "busy" areas. If I copy that .dll into the game folder I suddenly get a steady 60-80fps EVERYWHERE running 4AA/8AF and all those game settings at max. So there is an issue. Whether it's my card, the drivers, the way the game deals with those things, whatever. There's a lot of people who had this problem and I was hopeful when some people said the latest patch made it go away...but for me it did not. So I put the .dll back in.

My card is older, it's a GTX 275.

what does this .dll do? I mean, it can't just magically correct everything...
i put it in the system, turned everything up way at max quality, disabled autosaves, played for an hour and a half with not a single hiccup, CTD or any issue. guess i'll have to leave it like that, although I shouldn't need to...

It fools the game auto-vid-settings detector into thinking you're using an older nvidia card/drivers, which for some reason (I don't know why) the game seems to like more, on some systems/for some people. If you look at the Options settings from the load menu (not the in-game menu, the intro start-menu) you should see that the game thinks you're using a different card. I think it's ge7900gs. Because of this the games auto-detect settings tends to reset all those options/resolution initially, since the game thinks you're running a lesser card, but I just bumped them all up again, like you did, and good to go.

nvidia did release new drivers a week or so after the game came out, in case you haven't tried them, but that didn't help me either. :/

yeah you're right, 7900GS. Huh... the last Directx9 GPU from nvidia.... maybe that has something to do with it? does new vegas use directx10 features? DX10 FAIL! then...

My video cared is a single AMD 5850, intel e8400, 4gb ram, P45 MB, Win7 x64, etc.
On my PC, the vanilla FO:NV patched (or not patched at all) to 1.2 has a constant and incredibly annoying stuttering that does break the game for me. it rears it's ugly head mainly when I turn the view with the mouse (even worse using a 360 controller). It's surely not related to water sampling, or any of the settings whatsoever, since it has the SAME stuttering when running on low at 1280x720 (looking just like a launch Ps2 game, with stutters).
HOWEVER, one app has fixed it with a flawless victory, as if the problem was very obvious and easily fixable for years. It's called FNV4GB. Apparently, besides other things, it "hooks and replaces the Windows GetTickCount() function that may improve stuttering." fixing the stuttering and making this a playable videogame again. I'm not sure if I can post the link, it's easily Googable anyway.
Please developers, make note of this and fix the engine, so that AMD users, or 64 bit OS users, or honest citizen users can enjoy this very fine game.

I believe you would like to see my dxdiag, so I shamelessly show it to you all:
