List of Official Fixes?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:43 pm

To the Admins/Devs:

Can we get a stickied list of fixes? While the latest (thrid) patch has good documentation I am unable to find anything about the first two. A full list of all the patches ever released, would be very useful (not just the latest patch released). We need this information so that we can decide which community fixes we need and which we do not.

Thank You,

4Aces

I'm really surprised how many of you trust and heap on "community fixes" and wonder why your computer is screwed up.

When you've been around as long as I, and many more who have been here even longer, you begin to trust what this wonderful community can put together. When the Devs. can't or won't fix certain problems with the games we play, it is up to "us" the community to fix it ourselves. Perhaps after you've been around for a while longer you will understand that. :whisper:

At lot of modders have been working with the engine and tools for much longer than Obsidian.

I dont wonder why my computer is messed up. I have a hundred mods, most of them fixes and dont have any issues that were not already there.

FNVedit can be used to resolve conflicts and sort order issues. And it's not like the mods are encrypted. We can all look at them and verify what they change.

Well chuckles, the first link has the wonderfully helpful statement "We have just released an automatic update for the PC version of Fallout: New Vegas that resolves quest and scripting issues". It has no specific information, and that was the reason I asked for an explicit list of changes. Since that link was the only one I could find on the first two patches, it was the reason I started this thread. The only specific information that I could find anywhere is on the latest patch which is #3, therefore there are two patches that we have no change log on. Thanks for quoting the posting rules. It is always fun to see someone go straight to that before even bothering to verify they actually have any valid points.

As for trusting the community fixes, since I manually checked each one, and I have no issues with my game, your comment is not only unwarranted, but could be considered trolling. Admins hunt trolls, so I suggest considering your words more carefully in the future.

@ahb
I would not say that most of the true fix mods (fixing broken scripts/triggers not fixing broken logic) are carried out be veteran Gamebyro modders. They just show a higher dedication to testing their work. Of course considering how ancient this engine is, I am sure there are a few still around from 6+ years ago. Since there are no engineers working on Gamebyro anymore, we can expect something much better for F4. :tops:

So, once again:

Obsidian/Bethesda - Can we get a full change log from the first patch to the third, or was the information from the first two misplaced?

Halcyon - I can think of two fixes I am using that have been tackled to a degree by the community but for which there is not yet an official patch. Neither changes anything outside of what is needed to fix the issue and in the case of the missing ending it only changes a single variable that was a type by Obsidian. Maybe you have been burned by some poorly written mods or maybe some of the "gameplay rebalancing" stuff out there, but these fixes both help people who are experiencing the issues addressed by them and help the devs figure out exactly what is causing the problem. A community fix that solves the problem is the next best thing to a rough-draft for a patch in some cases.

1) Missing Ending (an ending slide included in game was rendered inaccesible by a typo- a "<" sign was used instead of a ">" sign). I'm not sure why this one wasn't fixed at launch because is easily caught by playtesting that includes checking to ensure at each ending slide can be accessed. Since I don't intend to wait a week or more to finish the game it makes infinitely more sense to install the fix so I'm not robbed of one of the "good" endings for this playthrough.

2) Cowboy repeater (and similarly loaded weapons) cause control freezeup for several seconds under certain conditions - was stated as fixed in latest patch but instead the issue was introduced to many who were not experiencing it. This fix is less perfect than the previous one because it can not force the animation to behave as it should. Instead it forces a sort of default animation whcih allows the proper reloading time to apply as opposed to causing a control glitch. As this renders the cowboy repeater and "Lucky" pistol far more useable in combat now, this one was a no brainer as those were two of my favorite weapons before the patch.

Yes - it is frustrating when someone says they found a bug and then list 40-50 mods they have installed (some of which have names that alter things directly related to the so-called bug). In those cases though simply suggesting they disable all mods and test while re-enabling them one at a time has solved the problem for them. It has the added advantage of helping identify potentially problematic mods as well as them being able to tell the mod creator that for some reason one of the better-looking veronica mods includes a change that can cause The Kings gang to expectedly turn hostile to you. Maybe the mod creator just thought they should be jealous of you having a Felicia Day folllowing you aound.

But hey, if we can't at least be helpful to the people who maybe we think should no better and test a situation without the mods before posting here then we can't help figure out whether it really is a bug with the game. If it is that's more info for the devs; if it's not and disabling a mod helped them well then the forums helped someone and their trhead can go away. The community fixes (actual fixes and not the myriad of gameplay tweaks that I agree can get really wonky) do the same thing. They help people with the issues they're having and they show the devs potential avenues for dealing with the existing problems. Even in the case of the hand-reload animation problem, which does not truly fix the problem but instead avoids it, this helps the devs narrow down what is at least causing the problem.

To the OP- those are the only two fixes I have right now myself. You can always search "fix" on the newvegasnexus site. Check which ones have updates or were posted well after the latest patch and you should have an idea of which ones are probably not still addressed. With the exception of the Followers ending fix, I would generally suggest not installing a community fix unless you encounter the problem. That way if it is addressed in a later patch it does not conflict. Upon patching, be sure to look through the changelog so you know which fixes to disable. Also, always disable mods and retest for an error before you assume it is an actual error with the game- or else Halcyon will hate you and roll his eyes at you as hard as he can.

I did just that about a week ago (before starting this thread) and came up with about 91 fixes that are not duplicates, of which I would consider about 80 to be actual fixes (code/script/meshes) and not tweaks (fixing logic). The problem is that most of the quest bugs do not show up immediately. and most of the fixes do not have method to reset the quest and then apply the patch so you are screwed. For many of the other fixes like Perks (e.g. Pyromaniac does not effect all flame weapons, again), dialogue endless loop/early termination, and the mesh clipping fixes, there is no reason to wait. They clearly work and have been extensively tested by thousands over many weeks. I manually merged them and tested to see if there were conflicts with the FalloutNV.esm and there were none.

I know the first patch was designed for xbox stability and fixing the 'bonus content' from pre-orders, but the second does mention 'a few quest/dialogue fixes' by after looking at the patched ESM and comparing it to the original, nothing jumped out at me (but there is so much that two or three entries could have been changed and I would have missed it). Now the third had enough changed that I was able to spot some of it, and after finding the changelog on this forum it was easy to see what was done. Since most of the mods have been released after the second patch, and the third does not list more than a few of the fixes I merged, I was just hoping for the standard changelog posting of every item fixed. Now I am staring to think that this was not tracked until patch three.

"Upon patching, be sure to look through the changelog"
Sorry but you are thinking of regular games. None of the patches (so far) came with changelogs, which is what I am asking for here. They did post a detailed changelog on the forum, but only for patch three, so I am asking that 1) this list be expanded as new patches are released and 2) the changelogs of the first two patches (which are incorporated in patch three) be added to the list. At this point, I am just hoping that they continue the standard practice of posting of detailed changelogs, but will still hold out some hope of getting them for the first two patches.

P.S. It would be nice if a changelog was incrementally included in the game's directory after a patch.

Cheers!

I've posted this on another thread, but I think it fits here since you are talking about the "so-called community fixes, that plague PC gaming"
My video cared is a single AMD 5850, intel e8400, 4gb ram, P45 MB, Win7 x64, etc.
On my PC, the vanilla FO:NV patched (or not patched at all) to 1.2 has a constant and incredibly annoying stuttering that does break the game for me. it rears it's ugly head mainly when I turn the view with the mouse (even worse using a 360 controller). It's surely not related to water sampling, or any of the settings whatsoever, since it has the SAME stuttering when running on low at 1280x720 (looking just like a launch Ps2 game, with stutters).
HOWEVER, one app has fixed it with a flawless victory, as if the problem was very obvious and easily fixable for years. It's called FNV4GB. Apparently, besides other things, it "hooks and replaces the Windows GetTickCount() function that may improve stuttering." fixing the stuttering and making this a playable videogame again. I'm not sure if I can post the link, it's easily Googable anyway.
Please developers, make note of this and fix the engine, so that AMD users, or 64 bit OS users, or honest citizen users can enjoy this very fine game.

I believe you would like to see my dxdiag, so I shamelessly show it to you all:
