radiation everywhere!

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:59 pm

so i was doing quests in camp searchlight, when i was very near death from rads (about 980) i tried fast traveling to new vegas medical clinic, and as soon as it loaded, i would die. i thought maybe i had spawned far above the ground and died from fall damage (has happened before), so i load the auto save and turn on god mode, only to find that there was still 4 rads/sec in front of the medical clinic.i turned off god mode and sure enough i got four rads per second! i can wait, but my rad meter jumps to about 600 when it finishes, same with fast traveling and sleeping. this is pretty game breaking, please help!

edit: the radiation is everywhere, as the title implies. not just in front of the clinic

LoL - clearly a rookie Player Character.
I have 40 RadX, 40 RadAway, and a radiation-resistant Space Suit.
Why have you gone to Camp Searchlight and, heheh, allowed your rads to reach 980 anyway...?
Game breaking yes.
Looks like restore from save, for you. :P

first i'd like to say that i'm only at level 12 with this character, and therefore have a limited supply of caps, plus i cant find anywhere to buy lots of radaway. the reason i don't load an old save is because my last hard save was two hours and lots of quests ago. please more helpful comments now

Not a bug.

Rad-X and Radaway aren't expensive and can be found for sale by doctors.

by "everywhere" i mean literally EVERYWHERE, middle of goodsprings, camp maccaren, the fort, it doesn't matter 4 rads/sec unless a radiation value is set (such as private edward's house where there is supposed to be 1 rad/sec, and there is)

and i know where to get radaway, just not in bulk, any suggestions?

Well the part about radiation meter getting stuck on regardless of your location - that part is a bug. It is probably related to fast travel autosaves made in a high-radiation area and possibly by turning on god mode and fast traveling again from one of those autosaves.

Since you had to use command console cheats, it is quite possible that this bug was triggered in part by using that cheat.

Dying from fast travelling while very near death while being irradiated is not nescessarily a bug. If you can try loading up the save from before you cheated and see if you can escape the high radiation area before you die- then fast travel- I would try that. I would bet you would not encounter the bug. If you can not get out of the high radiation area without dying then I would suggest loading an earlier save and coming back when you can properly equip yourself to survive the high radiation areas.

actually the reason i turned on god mode is because i had died upon fast travel the first time
but you're right the bug is probably because of the godmode thing. but any suggestions on fixing the bug (bar reloading because i'd rather not do both searchlight quests again)?
oh well, back to fallout 2 for now

It really depends on what saves you have besides the auto-save and how far back they are. If you had to cheat to survive those quests then (without cheating) I would suggest find a save in the middle of them when you weren't just about to die and come back and finish them when you can.

If you don't want to beat the area without cheating then if you have a save right after them (maybe even the fast travel autosave) then you could always try walking out of the area until the radiation is gone and then fast traveling and see if that helps. If you only have saves AFTER the medical clinic then I would try the following.

First, get your radiation level medicated back down so it won't kill you right away.
Try drinking dirty water and seeing if that unsticks it. (toggle god mode off before you do)
If it doesn't go somewhere with radiation and leaving the radioactive area just by walking.
Go back to camp search light (fast travelling with god mode on maybe so you don't die along the way) and disable god mode once you're there and walk into and then out of the radiation area and see if it unsticks it.

Ok so the current exposure rate of an actor is tracked in the game as "radiationlevel." The command "getradiationlevel player" should return your current rate of irradiation. This should of course return "4" for you when that is stuck on. I would go ahead and give that a try to- i'm not sure if the command causes it to recalculate it.

I do not know of a way that forces the game to recalculate your rate of irradiation though- I thought it did that on the fly. Have you turned off god mode at all since you left camp searchlight?

It might be worthwhile trying various ways of potentially modifying the "radiationlevel" value for the player. Maybe try setradiationlevel player 0 or player.modav radiationlevel -4. Or player.set radiationlevel to 0. Even if those work they might break things in a different way and set your exposure rate to always equal 0. That would be less bad but still damage an aspect of the game. At least there aren't any quests here that REQUIRE you become irradiated.

i didn't need to cheat to survive the quests the reason i turned on godmode was because i died upon fast travel WITHOUT godmode, and i have tried to reset the radiation (by drinking nuka-cola and visiting private edward's house, which has 1 rad/sec). and yes i have turned off godmod since then, in fact i turned it off as soon as i got to the clinic

if you are willing to cheat, then why not just spawns some radaway with console command?

You are going to have to go back to a save before the bug presented itself. Only way you are going to be able to fix it.
