Weather and Natural Disasters

Hurricanes (summer, fall) once a year
Blizzards (winter) all the time during winter in coast and mountain plateaus
Floods (spring) low land areas and big rivers around every other year or so
Avalanches (can happen all year except summer - but mostly in the spring) surprisingly rare
Rock slides (most common)
Forest fires (summer) pretty common, especially in birch and pine forest, not so much in evergreen forest

Everything else - Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Tornadoes: never. Earthquakes are so mild and rare that you don't feel them (we had 1 in 100 years, measured 4.8), Tsunamis are almost exclusively in tropical areas, and Tornadoes need very low land and also a difference in water/air temperature that you don't get in the climate.

Also, the only volcano in Scandinavia is on Jan Mayen, a Norwegian island far from civilization, and it's dormant. But this is one area I think they can take artistic freedom with, since volcanos make good set pieces and they're common on Iceland (though not Scandinavia, it's pretty much the offspring of isolated Norse culture) and also some in Russia very close to Norway and Sweden.

But if we don't have seasons there is little point to all but blizzards and avalanches.

I hope, HOPE there are real seasons, because Scandinavia's seasons are amazing. Fall is bright orange everywhere, winters can be very cold in the inland and mild on the coast, spring is like summer and winter at once, and summer is just as hot if not hotter than central Europe.

Also, the sun never comes up in the winter and never sets in the summer.

That's right! Vampirism can be problematic when you have to stay inside for 6 months! LOL

yes yes YES!!!!!!!!! you sir have just made da perfect disasters skyrim could have and i to think that there should be spring summer fall and winter!! (off topic) there should be holidays!!!!!!! and every time it gets close to a holiday all the towns should have decorations all over and in homes!!!!!!!!! but i dont know if elder scrolls has holidays so if you know of any holidays please tell me them!!!!! or die!!!!!!!!! who said that? me. who are you? you. me? yes you. ok well by. by

As theoretically cool as they would be in a fantasy setting, no, ignoring obvious game/immersion breaking tornados and volcanoes, how exactly could they pull off good simulations of natural disasters without distructable envioronments, and even if the environments was destructable I would totally get PO'ed if a random tornado destroyed a bunch an area I liked.

I'm about 99% sure that hurricanes can not form in Scandinavia.

What could possibly add to gameplay a Tornado?

These disasters tend to have a very big impact, and Skyrim won't be so dynamic that we would see towns destroyed by random earthquakes.

They just won't work, unless its part of a quest or something...

Indeed, Bethesda probably won't dov things like this, except as quest events, as these are events that would typically have a major impact on the gameworld, and I doubt Skyrim will be able to simulate that, and even if it could, I wouldn't want it to, because I wouldn't want to potentially see towns entirely destroyed, breaking any quests that might involve them, due to events in no way connected to the story.

I could see blizzards being in the game, maybe, as that would probably be reletively easy to do, if your game can already do snow, but everything else, I doubt it.

It would be cool to have a quest involving some kind of natural disaster. I like this idea. But, yes, I now see the excellent points against random natural disasters. It just wouldn't work, nor would it have a point...

Blizzards, Tsunamis, Windy thuderstorms... no Tornados or Earthuakes or anything though... except maybe once.

a little off topic, I would also want to see Aurora Borealis (the northern lights) and realistic-looking refracted light after rainstorms (rainbows).

I''m not sure about natural disasters, but I do think that some areas where there is lava boiling up in the volcanic tundra would fit and provide some really cool visuals. Aside from that, I like the idea of blizzards, rain storms, maybe forrest fires to a small degree, and small scale things like that. I'd really love to see areas of that volcanic activity stuff though, just small scale things that add to the visuals and atmosphere of the volcanic tundra, but that don't upset the mechanics of the game. That would be really cool and I think is actually a possibility because I believe Todd specifically mentioned an area like that would be in the game. He didn't say as far as I can remember how that area would be portrayed, but it sounds cool to me.

Where I live there has been 3 hurricanes in my lifetime. Northern coastal Norway. And every year not counting those 3 there has been a major storm bordering on hurricane strength.

The warm stream from the Gulf of Mexico actually stretches into the fjord where I live. So yeah. In the winter, the water temperature is still warm and never freezes.

The problem is Skyrim's location. How often does a Hurricane form in the Arctic Ocean and smash into Russia or Canada?

Nothing that drastic. Maybe like blizzards and severe thunderstorms but thats about as strong as I want nature.

There is a continent North of Skyrim. It's actually placed more similarly to a place like Germany at the most isn't it? It's more snowy because it's so mountainous I thought.

In any case I voted no. The examples in the post for the poll are absolutely over the top in my opinion.

The examples in the first post are over the top, but I agree with the sentiment. Mostly because to have natural disasters, if random, would require a more dynamic world. I'd love to have one of those for a change.

Skyrim does not equal Scandinavia or our world's North.
They have similarities, but are definitely not the same.

There are no dragons as far as I know in our world :)
No Dark Elves either.
There are no environments as varied as in Skyrim either in such a small area as 42 square kilometers. There's not a specific fall forest in Scandinavia.

Point is: Skyrim does not equal Scandinavia or our world's North.
