Dearest Jeremy Soule... Isn't this a bit... Derivative?

Personally, the one thing in particular that reminded me a lot of other video game music would be the soundtrack for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. None of it was blatantly copied from elsewhere, but some parts of some songs sound like they took parts from other notable songs. People have made the argument that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-t1Bzrrw3k&feature=player_detailpage#t=66s and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utg1wmeToNc&feature=player_detailpage#t=11s are similar. They share one part in common though, about a minute into the WoW one and right in the beginning for the Halo one.

Both of those are a blatant ripoff of Edvard Grieg's "Morning". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya5ICVKUERg See? They both have similar instruments, and a somewhat similar mood at some points, like 0:50 in the Halo one, and yeah. :P

Of course. How could I have been so blind?

I can see it now. Morning is also a ripoff of Rebecca Black's "Friday" because they both have a note in the key of A somewhere. We should do something about this!

They are clearly both using instruments, plagiarism!

If you listen closely, the ugly fact that they both are conveyed in sound, will also reveal itself.

tsk. tsk. Jeremy.

Nice piece by Grieg. The "plagiarism territory" insinuation is laughable.

why bring up plagiarism. do you realize how stupid that sounds?
a simple "no" in the poll would have been better.

I don't think Mr. Soule's music is specifically derivative... I think it's more generally derivative; you know, trite.

I would say it's a difference in culture. Being fostered in a socialist world where there's a very low threshold for plagiarism, I forgot to modulate my message to an American audience, where such things are applauded as long as money is generated.

My bad.

No, don't try to make up for your false hearing through unnecessary insults, grow up a bit.

Oh, and plagiarism and copyright are pretty big deals here, your just ignorant.

Oh, don't be silly. Plagiarism is frowned upon even more in a capitalistic society because it cuts into profits. Therefore the one losing profits goes after the one stealing profits to not only shut down the plagiarist, but also get even more profit at the same time!

As I am now convinced this thread is all about the troll, I would just like to point out something which you might find interesting Darkest -

"For the Hall of the Mountain King I have written something that so reeks of cowpats, ultra-Norwegianism, and 'to-thyself-be-enough-ness' that I can't bear to hear it, though I hope that the irony will make itself felt." (Edvard Grieg)
---------------------------------------------------------

If this was still a real discussion about the music I would like to point out that you have overlooked the 'organic' development of the theme over the last three games. It has been adapted to more suitably fit the ethos of the current episode in the series, whilst still remaining true to the thematic melody. Oblivion's Reign of the Septims brought a more imperialistc feel to the music, and now Skyrim brings some earthy Norse power to the composition. In this regard, I can see a stylistic similarity which I was not prepared to acknowlege last night when I read this thread (with maybe a couple too many G&T's inside me lol).

However, the suggestion of plagiarism is frankly absurd when considering a stylistic influence on a composition. Look to the origins of Jeremy Soule's theme itself to hear the basic melody most clearly.
---------------------------------------------------------

Finally, just because I enjoy baiting Mitheledh -
Spoiler

Plagiarism does not cut into an artist's profits, but rather offers an opportunity to create more money. eg. if I ripped off Gimme Shelter from the Stones, and released a similar song - it would not diminish their sales of the original, but rather offer them a new monetary avenue to explore in regards to that piece.

IMO, plagiarism is more of an issue when an unsigned / unknown artist is undermined by an established one. Proving intellectual copyright is a very complex issue though, and money is not a beneficial addition to any artistic process...

Of course you are right that Plagiarism is just as important within capitalism though.

The thing that gets me, is that you have yet to further explain exactly how they are alike. If they are SO close that you can make a thread and wish to argue over it, then you should have no problem listing off how it is almost the same.

The best part is he refuses to back his argument. I'm actually curious as to how he thinks they are alike... unless he was just trollin' or something. :(

This is my theory--he won't back his argument because he can't. I am well-tuned to music and I can find similarities in scores of musical compositions--but apart from there being a male choir singing over classical music, there is nothing even remotely similar between these two pieces of music. It's like trying to say that a cat is the same as a donkey just because they both walk on four legs....This thread is a joke.
