Considering a drastic rebuild, couple of questions

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 5:41 pm

Although only a dozen or so people are online right now, I can check/bump this later :P In short, at some point during my game (which I failed to notice until much later), my play time dropped to around 1 hour & 15 minutes. With 4gb RAM and only 30% being used by Win7, I can still only get Oblivion up to between 1.2-1.5gb RAM use. Removing mods one at a time has yielded no results, almost down to bare bones FCOM. So here is what I am considering, since I've become very partial to this particular character.

Take inventory of all the loot I wish to keep (reference numbers), and i.d. number of all the quests I've completed. Perform a clean install, then use Wrye Bash to import both the face and stats of my character. After that, I use 'player.additem ref#' and 'completequest questid#' to get all of my loot and quests, respectively. So my questions; if the save is bugged, will importing stats from that save carry over those bugs? And will excessive use of the aforementioned console commands cause any issues? Like will it create bloat that can't be removed by Wrye Bash? Or does using the console to add quest rewards create problems?

Any insight is greatly appreciated. Seems like a hell of a lot of trouble I know, but I don't think I could stand making another new character :brokencomputer:

Well, lets start by first figuring out the problems with memory... I'd try to avoid committing to a complete reinstall unless there are absolutely no other options possible.

Oblivion is incapable of using any more than 2Gb of RAM, the only exception being if you are running a 64bit OS and have installed the LAA patch. Performing a complete reinstall will not help you at all with this, it is a genuine engine limitation. I'm seeing 1.2 to 1.5Gb, though, and that crash should be happening at about 1.7Gb, so you might have something else munching memory in the background. Make sure you kill any unneeded processes to increase Oblivion's available RAM before playing. Also, can you get a more concrete value of the amount of RAM Oblivion has allocated for itself at the time of the crash?

You didn't post a load order, so I'm going to suggest you install a PCB mod such as Streamline, as these mods regularly clean unnecessary Oblivion data out of the RAM and allow you to play for longer periods of time.

I should clarify. I didn't think LO was necessary here. I am running Win7 64-bit, and used http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php on both obse_loader.exe and oblivion.exe. As I said, the OS uses roughly 30% of my 4gb (~1.2gb), and that's after killing all the backround stuff. (I'm using a wireless network, so my Firewall + AntiVirus suite needs to be on full time). I am using Streamline, and recently got a separate PCB mod that I have yet to install.

Even if I only got 2gb of memory out of Oblivion, that would put me up to 80% of my total, and effectively yield another hour or so of playtime. Thus my original questions remain. However, here is my load order, including the mods I removed after I began testing.

OK, I'm seeing a mistake in your setup right now. You've applied the LAA patch to obse_loader.EXE. Don't do that.

Another suggestion: If you don't have Oblivion Stutter Remover, grab that and set your Heap in the INI file to ThreadHeap2 (5) and set the Heap Size to 1024. Setting an FPS cap in OSR will also reduce the rate at which Oblivion munches memory (I recommend 30FPS).

You give me too little credit :P I've gone over that thread multiple times, and have long since made the changes you listed. I can replace obse_loader with a clean version easily enough. Who knows, maybe using a non-patched loader with a patched oblivion.exe will help me.

I'm giving you as much credit as you present. I apologize if I'm coming off short, but this is all important stuff that you didn't mention. All I got out of the OP was that you were having memory problems, not that you had also taken the necessary measures to correct that and I tend to be very literal in my interpretations, especially on internet forums. In any case, thanks for clearing things up, you've made it very obvious now you've done your homework. :)

So yes, try taking the LAA patch off obse_loader.EXE and see if that helps. If it doesn't then take the LAA patch off altogether and see if that makes a difference. (Again, I'm trying to avoid a full reinstall until you've exhausted every other option).

I apologize mate. You are correct, and your help is quite welcome, especially when specialty knowledge is rather hard to come by these days. I replaced all of my OBSE stuff with a clean download, and the game crashed at 1.67gb. I believe the next step as you say, is to test my memory consumption w/ a Vanilla game.

Actually, 1.67Gb seems to be within reasonable margin of error for this game, but that's without the LAA patch.

I removed a quest mod I wasn't using, and crashed at 1.78gb of RAM :brokencomputer: An improvement, but still a far cry from the results I should be seeing using the 4gb patch. And that will likely go down once I re-add Unique Landscapes + All Natural. I'm dreading the time needed to manually get all of my loot back and making sure there are no quest over-laps more than the actual reinstallation

Edit 1:
What is this DAA patch?
Will it improve my fps?
The patch in question will not improve your fps, simply increase the amount of memory that Oblivion can consume before crashing, thus providing longer play time between crashes.

The LAA patch (stands for Large Address Aware) allows you to work around Oblivion's limit of 2Gb of RAM usage, allowing you to play for longer periods of time before the engine runs out of usable memory and crashes. These are the requirements:

-at least 4Gb of RAM available on your PC
-a 64bit Operating System
-Oblivion Stutter Remover

Although, as we can evidence here, it doesn't seem to work for some people. :obliviongate:

A little thought... your computer has 4Gb of RAM installed, but not 4Gb of RAM available. As you said, Win7 is using about 30% of it, which means you really have a little less than 3Gb of RAM available at any given time. I wonder if that might be a factor?
