Missing Sign Textures and CTDs often

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 2:24 am

So I spent the better part of today doing a clean reinstall of Oblivion, and following the instructions for several mods very carefully. The result of this hard work was a mostly working game. The only problems are that all the signs for shops are just purple, and Oblivion CTDs about every 5 minutes.

Are you running a sign texture replacer? If so, be sure the resources are installed correctly. Also, I'd get rid of everything from Natural Environments except "Natural Habitat". There are far better weather and vegetation mods out there. For example, probably the best weather mod is All Natural. For vegetation, you could try Enhanced Vegetation. Both are worlds better than the Natural Environments counterparts.

You are running a very small mod list. I'm not sure why you are getting such frequent CTD's. Are you using any OBSE plugins?

What's the story on your Archive Invalidation?

If I'm correct about what you're asking, all I'm using with OBSE is Deadly Reflex.

Yeah, I know DR requires OBSE, but are you running any plugins besides Nifse? The plugins are in your OBSE/Plugins folder. Are you using Nifse? That's required for DR.

Archive Invalidation is basically how the game figures out what resources (such as textures) to use, and if you aren't using it then it's really no wonder your signs are messed up. Here's a couple of options:

1. Download and install http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10724.

2. OBMM comes with an Archive Invalidation utility, so open that tool up, select BSA Redirection, and then Update now.

Still got purple signs? Then that means you didn't install a texture replacer properly.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of Nifse, and yet I've gotten DR to work before. It's installed now.

Turns out I have a BFA named ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!
To be safe I used OBMM and updated it.

Lemme see if that fixed it.

Did you download every Better Cities Resources file, perchance?

You might consider downloading a tool like http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16704 so you can see where the game is looking for the texture it can't find.

Well on the Nexus there are three main files, and four old versions. I used all three main files, none of the old, as it doesn't seem to say anywhere that I needed to. Should I download those other ones?

Also: I tested it, and the game seems to be running with no CTDs (unless they're just delayed further), though the purple signs are still there. They all seem to be from buildings Better Cities added.

No, if you have the three main files, you've got everything needed.

You may want to repost this one in the BBC forum. They know the mod much better than I.

NifSE is required for DR to function correctly. If you don't have it, something about DR won't work. I'm not sure why it is needed by DR, but it says in the readme that it is required. So download NifSE.

Better Cities has thre files: Better Cities, Better Cities Resources, and Better Cities Permamnent Resources. You need all three and install all 3.

I installed all three, though there still seems to be missing textures.

Check you have 7 BSAs with the [Better Cities - ] prefix in your data folder.

Please install FormID Finder or Refskope, as well, and get us screenshots of the missing textures and the reports on them.
