[REQ] New music plugin

Post » Sat Dec 11, 2010 6:44 am

Maybe you know this OBSE plugin: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19772
If not: it greatly improve the Oblivion music system in many ways. The better improvements are:
- tracks now fade in and out
- after a battle the previous track resume
- you can create new playlists
- you can disable the battle music

Well, this plugin is unfinished and bugged and the author does not support it anymore.
All those who use this plugin would like to play it without these annoying CTD and bugs.

So my request is: could somebody improve this plugin (or create a new one from scratch)?

There's already a mod that is stable and with a lot of features, named Better Music System: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26892

Nope, that is a mod with scripts that actually use and require Enhanced Music and Control to be installed, plus it needs yet another plugin, Sounds Commands.
I didn't know Enhanced Music and Control causes CTD or that it had bugs, that is terrific. I've been using it for a very long time, where is the evidence of those problems?

Look in the comment section in the TesNexus download page.
Me too: I can't even put it in my OBSE/Plugin folder because the game crash at start up (But I used this mod since it's first release).
Nobody can't find a solution to this problem.

Apparently for some, it does.

But I've also been using it for ages, and I have no issues with it at all. Go figure, hey?

Could it possibly be some people have issues with it due to having too many obse-plugins in the data\obse\plugins folder? I'm not quite sure if there IS a limit, but I noticed that with CSE I was forced to remove a random obse-plugin or it would crash immediately, which to me looks like it reached its limit somehow and it might be the same here? This is just speculation ofcourse.

I am using Enhanced Music control just fine, but installing BMS will cause game to freeze whenever I begin combat...

never really figured out why, so am playing with EMC only (and not BMS). EMC is required for another mod that prevents psychic battle music...

I think, instead, it could be a backward compatibility problem since OBSE v19, but I'll try your idea: I'll remove all plugins but EMC and run the game.

I use Better Music System without any issues at all. However, there have been threads in the past where people complained of crashing and stutters - this is related to EMC, and *usually* a codec issue related to FDDshow. I have been able to recreate the stuttering issue on a non Creative based card (on board sound card), and adding Oblivion to the FDDshow exception list fixed this.

But, yeah, Better Music System [censored] owns.

Well if you play a character that uses detect life spells or effects at all - you will see what BMS is really all about ...which is being chased by invisible rats.

I've just tried remove all my plugins. In the OBSE/Plugins folder there is only "EnhancedMusicControl.dll". No mod is using it.
It still crash 0.5 seconds after loading the game. So it isn't an incompatibility problem, neither "too many plugins" problem.

Trying to run with ConScribe...

I am still using Enhanced Music OBSE Plugin fine together with my Immersive Combat Music mod http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23545.

Never had an issue with it.
As I said, It crash me even with just the EMC plugin and no mod using it.

Sometimes it crash instantly after loading the game, while rarely it run, but crash after 2-3 minutes.
The badder thing is: there's nothing in the OBSE and ConScribe logs!
In the OBSE logs it say that EMC is loaded correctly.

I'm using:
Oblivion + SI + SI official patch
OBSE v20 beta 2
Wrye Bash v290 + Bashed patch constantly rebuilded

I can't find the solution. I can post my modlist (sorted with BOSS). Maybe you can find the conflict:

I propose again my question:
Please, could somebody rewrite this plugin? (if starting from scratch, also these problem will disappear).

I have a vague recollection that people with codec packs had issues with the mod sometimes. The plugin uses DirectShow and this causes issues for some systems if they have a dodgy codec. Or it may be just a sound card hardware incompatability

I was browsing through the source code, and noticed it's using some inline assembler code. According to Microsoft's documentation, "programs with inline assembler code are not fully portable to other hardware platforms." So these "random" crashes might actually be related to the CPU you're using.

I'm currently figuring out what exactly that assembly code is doing, but I don't have any assembly experience. In the mean while, it would be interesting to see which CPU everyone is using, and if they're having these crashes.

I'm using an AMD Athlon II X2 250, and I'm not having any crashes.

EDIT: Nevermind this, Sound Commands also uses inline assembly codes, and doesn't have any of these problems. (right?)

I just started using that plugin a few days ago, and it has affected my stability at all. Check your codecs situation and maybe even the software that came with your sound card (if applicable.)

I don't have a sound card, all the work is done by the CPU: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
My graphic card is an old Nvidia 7300GT - 256 MB (old but it work).
My ram is 2.5 GB

I never changed my codecs since the first time I installed EMC (few hours after the release!), while the CTD only start few months ago.

It's possible that something else (e.g., an entirely separate application installation) has changed your codec setup for you.

I suggest installing K-Lite Codec Pack Mega, and going to K-Lite Codec Pack -> Tools -> Codec Tweak Tool, and running that. Choose "Fixes", and tick all that you can. Proceed, then exit. See if that helps.

You can always uninstall K-Lite, without any hassle. That I'm aware of, anyway. But CCleaner and similar things are out there, just in case, I suppose.

edit: It's also entirely possible your codecs are fine, and it's something else! :) But it might be worth a try. This exact procedure has helped a few people, some of whom are members of these forums.

It doesn't work.
Installed K-Lite Codec Pack Mega, running Coded Tweak tool and choose Fixes as you say.
Still CTD.

These are the Windows bug report, and various logs (if they can help):

It doesn't work.
Installed K-Lite Codec Pack Mega, running Coded Tweak tool and choose Fixes as you say.
Still CTD.

These are the Windows bug report, and various logs (if they can help):

What folders are there in your Data\Music folder? Do they have any files in it? Does it crash just after you load a game? Where is your character?

I was able to reproduce the exact same EMC and OBSE logs by removing 2 folders (not the \Special folder) from my Data\Music folder, and loading a game. It crashed about 1 second after my save was loaded.

I have all the standard folders (Battle, Explore, Dungeon, Public, Special) plus the folders that comes with BMS. I've never deleted any folder/files. I've only added new tracks to the BMS folders.
The game crashes just after loading the game (90% chance) or after 2-3 minutes (10% chance); no matter where my character is or what time is it. I'll try remove the extra tracks and folders and see if it run.

EDIT: Nothing better. The problem isn't in the Data/Music folder

OK.
This is the most odd thing I never said.
ConScribe seems to keep the game run with EMC!
I don't know why...

EMC only = CTD
EMC + Conscribe = OK!

How could it be possible? Maybe the ConScribe creator can explain this?
