melee with bows

Poke someone in the eye with it, then you run and hope to God that you're never gonna have to use a bow in close combat ever again because it's stupid.

Sounds like more of a last ditch push rather then a useful attack.

And from the durability comments, perhaps doing so would significantly damage your weapon.

I saw someone block a small wooden pole with his bow once and the bow snapped in half. Bows were never intended to block or bash anything as they are quite fragile and under tension. Applying force to the wrong side would cause it to snap instantly.

So in my opinion this is one of the things they could have done without.

Yes I to find it pretty stupid, you can not kill anything larger than a real world rat bashing it with a bow and just hitting something hard would easy break it. You can probably block a sword with it once, it will break your bow, preserve the block button to cancel a draw so you don't waste arrows.

Guns can be used as melee weapons, not bows.

I'm going to have to say that I find the idea of using a bow as a melee weapon pretty silly. Yeah, it might work in a pinch, but a bow is not going to be nearly as a) effective or B) durable as a weapon originally intended for melee (like a staff). Best case scenario, I can see maybe parrying or deflecting a blow, hopefully throwing your opponent off balance long enough to hightail it out of there.

As for jabbing someone in the throat with an arrow, pulling it out, and then using that arrow to shoot someone else... methinks you've seen the exploits of Legolas (the flamboyant film version, of course) one too many times.

I love how they are making the bows stronger, but limiting arrows by making them exspensive. This isnt really realistic but at least its more balanced.

hmmm this looks to be an extremely interesting idea but i wonder now if bethesda will also use shield with bows for an extra bit of blocking (just to say this was a valid tactic in medieval times and has been used). but going on topic again i wonder if well start seeing weapons like a bow with a blade running up it?

I've never been too keen on this idea aye. I'd love to see some historical accounts on bow melee cause it doesn't seem logical to me. Essentially the bow would be a blunt weapon (for melee) but due to it's flex it should have limited effectiveness in this role. Also in what reading I have done, it seems that archers/crossbow people (whats their term?) protect their weapons in order to maintain their shape and effectiveness. An archer would not like to risk warping their weapon by wrapping it around an enemies head, though it's better than dying as an alternative i guess. Also, what about the string, seems that that could get easily caught in an enemies amour, impeding the warrior, possibly being cut or being dislodged from the archers grip. But hey, Beth (whom we love) is including the bash, so who am I to argue. In the context of Skyrim I believe it will be a useful and appropriate move which adds to the game play experience.

Not hard oak wood!
Nor elven! Nor daedric or ebony!

In fact, It's actually possible to crush a man's skull with a red oak "Bokken" (a wooden Iaito - "Iaito" being a standardized Katana) in a single blow.
