The idea of controls with no customization is pretty dumb. I have not purchased certain games for xbox simply because they have one set of stick and button controls with no other options. Making oblivion that way was a mistake and continuing it with Skyrim would an even bigger one. I played all the Elder Scrolls games on PC so did not get effected by it and plan to play Skyrim on it but not everyone will. Bethesda should realize that a lot of people who played Morrowind and Oblivion and will play Skyrim also play FPS games and should maybe take a look at games like Halo and Call of Duty and allow as many configurations as possible like most fps games. It is really not much to ask, I play southpaw configuration on xbox fps games ( move with right stick look with left) and cringe at the idea of having to play on a console. i'm glad to play on PC because of mods, keyboard and mouse controls and better graphics, but those who prefer consoles or don't want to or cannot afford a PC should be given as many controller options as possible. The idea of TES is playing the game how you want to and giving only 1 control style for consoles partially throws a wrench in that.

im pretty sure in oblivion on the xbox 360 that you could change what button does what. Im not saying to not have the customizable button layout, but im just saying Bethesda made the default button layout to accompany newbie and veteran players alike. you definaley wont see a newbie playing with tactical on, and you wont see a newbie to TES playing "legacy" layout. Default is fine, has been fine and will be fine for a button layout. ive had no mix ups, or anything with it and it flows good with the game and the style of game it is.

Left Thumbstick : Walks forward and backwards, but looks left and right.
Right Thumbstick: Looks up and down, but walks left and right.

...people actually played like that?

Wow.

(I've got a hard enough time on consoles with one stick being move and the other being look. Mixing up the two functions onto both sticks would probably leave me spinning in a confused circle. :D But, then, I avoid console FPS's.)

My brain just died trying to think of how that would work. That's just whacked out, who would ever think of that?

You couldn't change the stick layout, buttons I don't know. Regardless though having a default setting and then having it fully changeable like all fps games are is not very much to ask at all. To be honest it should be a no brainer. Many people play with very different stick layouts in first person games and should not have to adjust to something completely different. My brother played Oblivion on xbox and while he loved the game hated that it forced him to play with only a default control scheme. In a game where they let you create your own class, go where you want, do what you want and progress on the main storyline at your pace a one size fits all default setting is not fine. If you are brand new to games in general it is one thing, but most people who will play Skyrim aren't and not all veterans play with the same stick layout. If you play FPS games with the layout I do which a decent number of people do then forcing them to look with the right button and move with the left when they have spent 10 years playing the exact opposite makes it a nightmare to adjust.

There is really no excuse for bethesda this time around making a game with more freedom of choice on what to do than any game around yet forcing you to play with one joystick configuration while even the most linear shooters let you have dozens of customizing options. It is pretty arrogant to just assume no one else will be bothered by a one size fits all non customizable default setting just because you aren't therefor it does not need customization especially when that is a pretty simple and small thing to ask.

Well, truthfully, every button on the 360 should be able to be changed, along with the joystick layout. Southpaw, inverted, classic, etc.

...people actually played like that?

That's how most FPS games on the N64 worked. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark in particular, although Turok did not work like that (it used the anolog stick to aim, and the C-buttons to move).

The closest I will ever come to Legacy and Southpaw is reversing the y-axis on the right thumbstick. I actually play MW on Xbox like that.

Bro.. If you have a 360, put in any COD game or FPS, go to "Stick" layout... Not "button" layout.
Switch it to Legacy bro. It does not change anything about any buttons what so ever.

This precisely. I am going to be playing on PC for sure, but the dual wielding thing may eventually lead me to use a 360 controller, what with the triggers being better suited for this kind of thing than alternating beetween mouse buttons, as far as I'm concerned. I can still find my way through GoldenEye and PErfect Dark, but I do honestly prefer the more recent controls, which is not to say that there is ANY reason whatsoever for the option to be absent. The more control one has over controls the better.

By the way, besides Turok, South Park, also by Acclaim, made use of the C buttons for movement while the anolog was used for aiming. Those are the grandpas of modern first person anolog controls right there.
