Ladders

Will Bethesda ever add ladders?

I wonder if their "new" engine has ladder climbing capabilities, something they have apparently seeked for many a year.

They might be able to with the new Engine according to them the reason they haven't is because it was too hard with gamebryro engine so with the new engine they might add ladders but it all depends

Ladders have always been used to separate cells. They're almost like a door in a sense. You press the ladder, you leave the cell and enter the floor above you. For this reason alone, I do not think ladders will be climbable in TES V.

How many times must we tell people, TES V uses Gamebryo.

I kind of like not going through the hassle of climbing them. they always remind me of the part in half live with the tentacle monster that hears you. you fall off the ladder there and you don't get back up. I've been secretly scared of game ladders ever since.

I for one would enjoy a game that allowed for climbing.. and maybe had a climbing skill involved. Obviously ladders don't need a climbing skill. But it would feel really good to scale a cliff rather than jump around until you get up the side of a hill.

The technology is ours and it is inspired by the technology we have. We have a lot of it. But that's our starting point - the Fallout 3 tech. It started with Morrowind, we went to Oblivion, we did a lot between Oblivion and Fallout 3 because now we had final hardware - with Oblivion we had six months on final hardware, so Fallout 3 technically does a lot more than Oblivion. The new stuff is an even bigger jump from that.

Sounds like Gamebryo to me.....

Funny how some people still haven't realized GameBryo has been ditched when Bethesda is doing their best to spread it all around. Hell, Gstaff even posted in a thread about it!

I mean, really. Every game in the history of games has ladders. I mean, The first Donkey Kong, with Mario (or was that the first Mario, with Donkey Kong) half of what you do is climb ladders.

Daggerfalls "climb" system basically allowed you to climb ladders, anywhere. I can't imagine it's hard to script an object with a 2-D ladder texture that enables the same ability. Not saying that would work so well for Skyrim, but the point is, everybody does ladders. Oh yea, and the engine is based on Idtech 5, if I'm not mistaken.

The problem is and always has been Gamebryo.
If I had to guess it is because it is hard to animate it correctly, allow you to stop in the middle of it, or climb faster, not because it is hard to code.

?

I don't know that. For all I know it's GameBryo because no other engine fit for such a large scale game

They've had years to make a new engine. It's guaranteed that they would have enough time for a new engine that could run a large scale game.

I had to do a search to make sure Maiq the Liar wasn't, um, lying, but he's right. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1148218-new-engine/page__st__40__p__16786625#entry16786625 The words Gamebryo and Idtech are not mentioned.

Didn't they state clearly that they IdTech 5 was not the kind of engine they would use to make a TES game?

GameBryo was not GameBryo when it was used for Morrowind (it's NetImmerse) so it doesn't have to be GameBryo, but simply something derived from it (improved so much you can call it something different, but still that same old feeling)

What I'm saying is that they may not call it GameBryo this time around, but it's still pretty much the engine they've been using all this time

I may have gotten some bad information. I think Paul O. tweeted "all new engine" and the article assumed it was idtech since Zenimax bought id.

Screw ladders, I was promised rope in 1996 and after fifteen years they'd better deliver.

It's an all new graphics and gameplay engine internal to BGS, and it looks incredible

We can't wait to show you more

New. No matter what you call it, it's not the same engine.

I foresee one of two scenarios, the former being the most likely:

1) They finally made ladders work and you, the player, are confronted with one during the tutorial mission, whilst an NPC is around. Said NPC makes a remark obvious enough to be recognised as a sarcastic remark about the problems ladders have caused for BGS to anyone who knows this, but subtle enough that it will seem natural to anyone else.

2) No ladders.
