Multiple lines of hotkeys

Post » Mon Jan 17, 2011 8:39 pm

IE:

  • 1-9
  • ALT+ 1-9
  • CTRL+ 1-9
  • SHIFT+ 1-9

IMO it's imperative that Skyrim launches with more hotkeys than Oblivion. It allows the player to prepare for different situations without pausing and rummaging through the sack whenever you see a mob that needs X weapon etc.

Agree?

I'm gonna say no sorry. I don't play FPS games for one reason, cause I lack dexterity and just can't move my fingers that quick, and a min of hotkeys in RPGs suits me fine. So one line of hotkeys that I can access on my mouse works for me. But hey, if it works for everyone else then throw it in aye, we can use it or not.

Absolutedly yes !
Theres little use having that multitude of spells if you lack the patience to go over the menu all the time selecting the one you want.... and if you use spells, 9 slots is too little to just put favorite spells and potions.
I didn't really get why someone would vote no for that. The lines are there, you don't really have to use it.

I have an idea about that: the main shortcut bar can be visible this time, so you don't have to memorize it, and the alternative ones can be optionally extended above it or snapped to the side of the screen, like we see in many games nowadays. That way we can still use the mouse. One of the best things i liked about Two Worlds 2.

Then help us all and vote yes :P

I hope you know people mostly want there to be as little HUD as possible? Just having the health, magicka and stamina bars and the compass up is too much for some people. And searching through the bars for the right key combination could easily be replaced by just popping into the favorites menu?

Shortcut bars are exactly the sort of thing that could, and should, be optional.

Good news, this won't be needed.

There will be a menu with infinite amount of favourites, which you can cycle trough during gameplay.

I always hated hotkeys, there never was enough for me to use, and multiple rows didn't helped at all...

i play mmos and it is a great tool to have multiple lines of hotkeys. i found it kinda tough in oblivion having to only go 1-9 or w/e it is. in mmos i only use 1-6 because 7+ hurts my hand... i never even put potions on my hotkeys because all my different weapons and spells were more neccessary. if i did need a pot i'd have to go through my bag... i would like to maybe map them to alt+ 1-3 or something like that. :S

Sure I thought 1-8 was way too few in oblivion. I ended up going to the menu all the time. Yeah a favorites will make menu hopping easier, but the game is improved if you don;t have to go to the menu at all. I'd also be okay with a visible menu bar that you could toggle on and off. Way back when I played mmos I was a clicker, nd used those visible menu bars a lot. but they have universal cooldowns so I never really saw an issue with it. Still it did not detract from my visual experience after the first couple minutes of playing, things like that kind of blend into the background.

1 visible bar of hotkeys. on the left side of it a little spinner arrow (up and down arrows) that let you quickly cycle from one hotkey bar to the next (there are also keyboard shortcuts to do that).

You don't even need to have hotkeys graphically on the HUD. I would just memorize where I put what, for example:

1-9: spells 1-9
ALT+ 1-9: Switching equipment 1-9
CTRL+ 1-9: Dragon Shouts, likely
SHIFT+ 1-9: Potions

Idk, but I hope there is a different inventory interface than there was in oblivion. On the PC it was way too menu heavy, when I could easily drag and drop like morrowind. If not, itll be modded lol.

I wanna be able to bind any combo of key.

Tell me about it. I "clicked" many of my powers in WoW because the trying to keep track of more than a few keybinds was just :ahhh:

Needless to say, I didn't bother with any high-end "you need 40 abilities at the tips of your fingers!" content in that game. :D

The 1-8 radial wheel they gave us in OB & FO3/NV was plenty for me, I didn't even use all 8 slots.

Of course, it's easy to let other people have their alt/ctrl/whatever-1-8. As long as it doesn't expect me to use 'em. :)

Agreed wholeheartedly. The important thing imo is having the lil' icons there so we can remember "what is what". but the way bethesda games are made (if you move the mouse it moves the viewsight) is different from other games that uses clickable hud, alright. the shortcuts can be there, but we could cycle them with mousewheel (i think someone already pointed that out).

Yeah the visible bar in a elder scrolls game only helps with reminding you of the numbers I guess. Unless they have a pause button. Heck that would be a slick way to do the favorites, hit the pause button(shift lets say) and a hud of favorites comes up. Kind of like Mass effect, but with a hell of a lot more possible buttons.

That would not work. (according to Oblivion, assuming similiar controls) If holding ctrl already makes us sneak, alt makes us block, and shift makes us run/walk then you would be mixing controls to get the result of multiple hotkey lines. I think 8-10 hotkeys is plenty and more are not neccessary.

Yeah but R could be sneak, f block and c run/walk. There are a lot of keys there is no reason why the buttons have to stay the same between games.

But c and r are not really natural keys to press... you want to make keys you hit alot very convenient. This is why sneaking (which is a 'common control), and walking are there. The only one I could deal without is block, because I never used alt to do that anyway. But shift and control need to be reserved from primary controls, not the hotkeys you will rarely swap between.
