Celebrity Voice Actors

Post » Fri Jan 21, 2011 12:25 am

If they're going to have voice acting at all, it should be good voice acting - actors who know how to do it, with a dialogue director who can get a good performance out of them. No voice is better than bad voice.

(Example - Jennifer Hale's performance as Female Shepard in the Mass Effect games is amazing. "Just anyone talking" would have svcked & ruined the game. She's certainly more than enough reason to pick a female PC rather than Mark Meer's male Shepard.)

I meant the dialogue for random filler NPCs and such, not main or unique characters.

Tons of crappy voice acting in games begs to differ. Someone may think they can voice act, but there are also people who think they can sing, too...

Sometimes its just lip syncing and a match of the wrong character and voice.

The lip syncing can be a visual aspect that was the (what ever you call the guy who does the visual facial expressions) fault aswell not knowing if that could fit the amount of words or the action.

Oblivion had Patrick Steward, Sean Bean, and Terrance Stamp. And the voice acting for the rest of the game was terrible. For the money they paid to those actors they could have hired several more actors who would have provided a greater number of voices at a better quality. So this time round id like to see only Max Von Sydow and a larger cast of more talented actors.

I don't care much whether they get celebrities or people no one has heard of or anyone in between as long as they sound like they fit in the game.

Celebrities = More Money
More Money = Less for more important things

NO celebrities. I'm sure it's too late and I'm sure they wasted money on some high priced actor/actors that will do nothing to improve the game whatsoever, much like the high priced actors for Oblivion that did nothing to improve the game.

Closing my eyes doesn't make someone's voice sound any better, so I don't see how it could possibly be something like lip syncing. But a poor character-actor combo is definitely a killer.

I don't care if the actor is famous or not as long the voice fits the person speaking. And for anyone who thinks any person can voice act, look up Dawn of War: Soulstorm and Resident Evil on youtube...

As a side note I hated how Orcs and Nords had the same voice...

Anyone with a voice.

I don't understand why voice actors are so special with voices. Anyone with the ability to speak. I can talk in many different patterns and tones, hell I do it for fun.

And more importantly forget celebrities, just some random person could do a better voice for the imperials in Oblivion. Sure you might need some special voice or such for a certain personality. But filler NPCs and characters can be done by anyone.

As a voice over artist, I find this incredibly insulting.

I'm sure most people know how to do this with their own voice.

Talking and singing are two different things. I can't carry a tune worth my life. But its all about matching the voice with the character, anyone can voice act if their voice can fit the character. Some people are talented enough to use different dialects and tones and such and thats why their valued more. With regular NPCs who have no unique "speech" could be done by anyone.

Instead of having one guy voice the entire imperial legion or male orc population we could have had a better number of different voices with variety. Some people would do it for free really if given the chance.

Then again I care less for voice-acting and would just want a ton of dialogue to read and flesh out the world text only.

I have come to the conclusion that you no idea what you're talking about. If you're going to have a discussion with someone, at least make sure you have a somewhat informed opinion beforehand. That's just respect for the people you're talking to/debating.

Voice acting is NOT just "talking". You can't pull a random person off the street and tell them to read some lines. Because then they just sound like a random person off the street who just read some lines. Voice overs require skill - the ability to properly convey the character's personality, the ability to imitate accents, the ability to express emotion, the ability to know where to properly apply inflection. Ever watch a voice over artist at work? Many use their hands, bodies and face to fully enter the character and deliver a great performance.

There's a reason gamesas doesn't nab a bunch of randoms and ask them to voice crap for free and instead employs local voice talent.

Believe me, dude, I've heard what it sounds like when you just get a regular joe to voice something. It's not pretty.

omg, best link ever. Evidence of why good voice actors are worth their weight in gold. I trust Bethesda to get the best actors they can get so we don't have to live with voices like the ones in that video link. There's no real feeling to any of the lines they're reading. Thanks for sharing it!

For anyone who may not understand why not just anyone could do it...it's not about speaking the dialogue with your voice, it's about speaking the dialogue with your heart.

Anyone who can talk? No. I'd say they should also be able to act and not grate on me in the first hour.
