what mods should bethsada pre-empt

Post » Sun Jan 30, 2011 9:18 am

inspired by this threat http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1178109-do-you-want-bethesda-to-use-moders%C2%B4-ideas-for-the-game/ I started thinking about mods.
Now there are certain kinds of mods that always come out for bethsada games and it seem to me that it would be nice if Bethsada would just include them from the start. For instance, we know that aomse people are going to want to have a survival system that requires sleeping and eating, New Vegas added such a component. So what mods should bethsada build into the game?
On a similar note what support should bethsada create for mod that are sure to be created? Fo instance, it is a given that people will create new cloths, armour, and weapons for the game. Should there be a system for integrating these things into the game? if so what should it look like? (shameless plug for my clothing system proposal)

If Bethesda builds it and puts it into the game, then it is not a "mod"

As for Beth support for mods, they already give outstanding support for mods, so far as to release the very same tool they use to create the game. No other company supports mods like Bethesda does.

Let me just say, if they pre-worked mods in, there would be people who make mods to do the opposite things. I never got several of the mods that it seems like alot of people wanted for Oblivion, or either Fallout. Either way there will be mods. The only mods that they should pre-add are ones that there is no opposite too. Like 'that improve the lighting system.' Nobody would want the worse lighting system, its a neutral thing that is better for everyone.

Yep. And it is still way to early to say for sure what is going to be in the game and what is not, except for what is already confirmed.

A better name for this topic is "what features should be put in Skyrim that were inspired by mods from the previous games."

Things I would like to be in from the start:
- customizable/moveable furniture, and possibly mannequins
- easy book and other item placement
- economy (sounds like we'll be getting this, plus it will be based on actual exports/imports like crops, timber, etc. I'm not gonna believe it till I see it.)
- PC optimized UI
- multiple simultaneous summons, with the chance of backfiring for the higher level summons
- ability to see your body in 1st person as well as your character actually interacting with the items in the world
- I also wouldn't mind an optional, built in eating/sleeping/drinking system so that mods that add new food automatically work with the eating system.

Stuff like that, especially where it might improve compatibility between mods if the features are in from the beginning.

They should have the ability for modders to implement tessellation in game and other DX11 effects they themselves are not implementing. Honestly they should just release the full SDK.

....
edit: they should pre-empt graphical overhaul mods :).

Pretty much whatever they do, there will be people who don't want it, or want it harder, or softer. Implementing features should be about giving people things that they want, not one-upping modders.

Something like Darn UI for the PC version.

Randomized stats/height and some more variations of the same creature (not every troll has to look identical, a simple retexture can do wonders) as MMM does.

I know they've said that they are going to make races more distinctive, but incorporating pretty much everything from http://www.theelderscrolls.info/?go=dlfile&fileid=215 would do me fine

Plants should visibly be harvested when you harvest them for alchemy, nor should you be able to waste time with them by attempting to harvest again after harvesting them once. When they regenerate, they should look ready to harvest again. Containers should visibly show they are examined, with the option of closing them again if you want to.

Everyone that uses Oldblivion would disagree with you. No matter what beth decides to add or not add, there will be modders adding or removing it anyways. Just as it should be. :twirl:

This is just a "What should be in Skyrim thread". If you are preempting a mod, you are just putting a feature in that you think people will like, since that's the reason they'd mod it in in the first place!

That depends entirely on the "improvements" the lighting mod you're using make. The "darker nights and pitch-black caves" improved lighting mod, for instance. I've never had any desire to get that for OB or FO3. So, yeah... opposition.

Nearly any mod has "opposition", no matter how much you think it's universally accepted. People with lower-memory systems certainly wouldn't want the "improved" bigger textures & higher view distance/distant LOD mods. People who like visibility wouldn't want the black caves mod. People who aren't into massive annoyance wouldn't want a "primary needs" mod. There's multiple different UI replacers with different options.... which one is the one that "everyone likes"?
