Character Dialogue. Yay or Nay

Post » Mon Feb 14, 2011 6:28 pm

So I was thinking not sure if they have announced yet but will our Character speak?... Like when you are talking to a NPC or a important person. Would you want your character to have dialogue and or use phrases and such in things like the Guild wars 2 videos (http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/warrior/ For those who have not seen any yet or care to. Scroll down and pick the first video)
I think it would be cool if they spoke once in a while. :foodndrink:

I am in support of either full dialogue or no dialogue, anything in between lacks consistency in my opinion. Unfortunately, I feel that if they were to implement full dialogue into TES games, it would mean reducing the number of interactions simply cause with the usual number of NPCs etc they would never get the job done (surely). So if it were to happen in Skyrim I think it would be a part implementation, and that would make my head spin.

No thanks. Not unless they can get my character's dialogue EXACTLY the way I want it and I highly doubt it'll happen.

There is no "No" option?

I don't think this would work in any Beth game TES or FO, it's different in a linear RPG but in a game like this it's better as just text IMO. It would feel kinda wrong trying to play different characters when they all have the same voice.

Yeah good point, and with what, 10 playable races, each with varying degrees of difference in voice, heck, that is a LOT of recording work for each conversation.

In 10 or 15 (20 max) years sure. By then Voice Modulation will be so advanced and streamlined you won't even need voice actors anymore.

Where's the "no option"? "I don't care" doesn't suffice, because I do care and I don't want my character to be voiced.

Synthesized voice has been around for years and it's barely improved at all, so I kinda doubt it.

There's no way to convey human emotions unless you have human to convey them. A computer can't do that.

Where is the 'Hell no' option?

Call me old fashioned if you like, but really prefer text over voice acting (yes NPCs as well).

I'd say yes, but voiceovers eat up a ton of disc space, so no, not for Skyrim.

I kind of like reading the text in Morrowind/Daggerfall. Talking to people was almost like reading a book. it gives us a lot more content too as far as dialogue goes

It is just not possible when you have more then playable character option, in this example 10+ playable races. It would be TOO MUCH to record 10 different voice overs for 10 races and even if they do it then the game size will be 20gb+. You can see any rpg that has more then 1 type of character playable don't have voice over's. Bethesda could have done it with Fallout 3 but with TES its impossible to do.

They had to take out an entire city as well as the arenas for every city save the Capital because of the Voiced Dialoge that wasn't all that in the first place.

NO I can do just fine imagining my characters voice, tone and demeanor as I've done since ever.

again I do not want awesome features being cut for some dialog as to what happened to Oblivion.

What if you could choose from several different voices? Kind of like Saints Row 2.

I enjoy the voiced dialog for NPCs in Oblivion and it was weird when I went back to mostly text in Morrowind, however as other people noted above, voiced dialog is a resource hog, so I admit, I'm rather torn at this point.

In addition, the game play video does show the character voicing the dragon shouts. Now that could've been a cut scene, or it could be that only the dragon shouts are voiced.

One more note... It appears to me that voiced dialog for NPCs is already in the game from what they've said about the new dialog system, so I think voicing a preference at this point is moot.

That feature alone would require more voice-acting work than voicing the NPCs. Do the math. The player character's lines would have to be voiced for 10 races and 2 genders, and I'd imagine the player character would have a lot of lines. Assuming that there is 1 PC line for every NPC line, that's 20 times the voice-acting work.

No character dialogue. My characters - my complex, richly detailed, independent characters - couldn't exist if somebody else controlled what they say.

Beth has already made their games worse by telling me by means of a "journal" what my character has decided s/he needs to do next. If they start actually putting words in my characters' mouths, there's no reason left to play their games.
