Colored Lights

Post » Wed Feb 16, 2011 10:59 pm

Perhaps I'm crazy, but one of the little things I liked in Morrowind were the blue and red lanterns and candles. I collected them, and I've seen at least one other person in these forums mention collecting them as well. They were missing in Oblivion, and I hope they'll return in Skyrim.

I loved those lanterns, I remember coloring my houses with the blue and red ones. One reason why I still play morrowind and not oblivion.

I had an entire house in Balmora dedicated to my candle/lantern and daedric statue collection. Good times, I hope they're back as well.

I missed those so much I had to mod them in. They were just lovely...
Placed floating ones all over the place in Caldera, occupied by my skeletal army constantly fighting off the imperials...

Same here, I decorated the corner club in Balmora with red and blue ones after I killed the patrons.

I used them all the time as well. They were beautiful and I'd decorate Raven Rock with them.

Yeah, I kinda liked those.

On a slightly different note, I would like lights that are colored black to actually make places darker again. Those things were useful when it came to creating properly shady areas in exterior cells...

I loved that.

A red paper lantern hidden behind the wardrobe in the upper bedroom of Tel Uvirith gave the place the proper atmosphere.

I loved scouting around for coloured lamps (and also skulls) to make my place more Telvanni crazy wizard like.

I feel like creating light sources might be detrimental to the new engine...since everything casts a shadow...but colored lights would be awesome.

The Blue flames in Oblivion were cool, but Morrowind really used lighting to tell a story...from candle lit sixth house bases, to blue lit velothi style buildings..

I don't think people underestimate the power of lighting in games either. Take Mass Effect 2 for instance. Thanks to the red and warm lighting in the game, it completely changed the tone in comparison to the first.

I missed having different types of lighting as well. Instead of just having torches, the candles and lanterns were really nice, I love the effect. :flamethrower:

I too collected the colored candles/lanterns in Morrowind. I made a daedric artifact/daedric equipment museum room in Hlormaren stronghold and filled the room with red lights! It was very nice.

It would also be nice if they put in a few more colors, such as green and purple.

I support this, with more colors. Do all the primary and secondary colors, a pure white and pure black (for making things brighter or darker without changing hue), and a few of the more popular colors like cyan, lime, some kind of brown or tan, etc.

Well, I want red lanterns.

Much cooler than blue.

We need green and purple.

Perhaps if you put so many lights in an interior cell, it just raises the ambient lighting in order to avoid lag.

I loved Morag Tong dens, those places were always lit by weird/dark colors. THAT is why I love Morrowind so much. The atmosphere trumps Oblivions 100 fold. BUT, I digress.
I agree, I think they should return.

I'm going to go ahead and shove this right back to the top. I loved the mobile candles and lanterns in Morrowind, allowed personalization of any area - combined with non-re spawning enemies you were able to make even a cave humble and safe. I liked that.
