NoRefraction chameleon

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 5:05 pm

Hey all,

Ive ran into a problem. Whenever I sneak with chameleon active, I get a complete blue screen (Health, weapon, compass are still showing), much like the Nvidea Blackscreen bug.
The cause of this bug is the NoRefraction mod that makes chameleon look transparent instead of invisible.

With the mod active: If I cast a chameleon spell, I notice nothing. I have to go into first person view and back before I notice the effect. But as soon as I go back to third person, I get a blue screen. I suspect it has something do to with the distance of the camera to the character, since I get a normal view if I turn the camera so that I look at my char from beneath.

So I deactivated the mod, and instead edited the bUseRefractionShader = 1 to 0 in the Oblivion.ini.
When I cast a chameleon spell in this situation, I notice the effect right away. And I get that blue screen about half a second later.

I already use the Nvidea Blackscreen BugFix.
I use an 8600 GTS card.
HDR.
Use 3.0 Shaders. (bAllow30Shaders=1and renamed shaderpackage019.sdp to shaderpackage013.sdp)
Changing the shaderpackage013.sdp file back to the original shaderpackage013.sdp did not help.

Is there anything I can do to get the NoRefraction mod working?

Greetings,
Badboyd22

Wait a minute, wait a minute.........Which version of this "No Refraction" mod are you using? As I remember it, there's two of them available for download from TES Nexus, and one is just a cheap copy made by someone looking to steal credit from the one who originally made it.

Gah.........Sorry to say, that's the wrong one to use. *facepalm* Read on:

Now, I'm not going to lie. This is essentially exactly the same mod as http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2411 in-game. It's functionally identical.

The only difference is, in that download, the file for some reason has HTML inside of it. Seriously. Look at it yourself. Dude must have opened it up in notepad and inserted some HTML for some reason. His still works, but it throws tons of errors at you if you try to open it up in the construction set or any Tes4Edit or anything like that, so the one I'm uploading here is basically a fix.

Needless to say, I strongly recommend that you get rid of that file, as the author of the one you're using clearly blocked endorsemants/comments so as to prevent people from informing him that his "mod" doesn't work.

Get http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23552 Or heck, just create it yourself with the CS. It's relatively simple, seeing as how you only have to change both "fChameleonMaxRefraction" and "fChameleonMinRefraction" to zero.

Absolutely, especially if you're using overhauls.

use spells no refraction instead, as it doesn't require .esps and also applies to other spells that use the effect.

Sorry to say, but this one gives the exact same effect. It works, but I get a blue screen. And it only works after switching views.
Thanks for linking the correct mod however. Much better. Ill read a few comments. Maybe someone has an answer there.

Thanks. Ill have a look.
I use relatively small amount of mods, but most of them ARE overhauls.
UOP (including SI), UOMP, Blackscreen Fix, Stealth Overhaul, Chameleon Rebalance, RenGuardOverhaul and Fransesco's.

Btw have you tried disabling HDR? It can cause some issues on older cards.

What mod would that be? I can only find http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6948, and it doesnt seem to work for chameleon. (sinds it only replaces some meshes)

I have not. But HDR is more important to me than this mod.
Ill give it a try anyway.

EDIT:
HDR, Bloom or none. It does not seem to make a difference.

Two recommendations that not have been mentioned yet:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13632

In the Oblivion.ini change iShadowMapResolution= from 256 to 512 or 1024

Im already using the Black screen fix :) Mentioned in the OP.
But I havent messed with the iShadowMap yet. What should I base the value on?

Thanks for input :)

EDIT:
The iShadowmapResolution has no effect. (It already was 512, 256 and 1024 were no different)
I did find out that when I disable Shadow-on-Self in the video-options, the bug is fixed. Same goes for disabling Exterior Shadows (sliding all the way to the left)

The bug also occurs in interior cells. But much less, and only when using very specific camera angles. Possibly due to the Black screen Fix Mod.

I know, but AFAIR the BS sneak fix has been a different matter.

iShadowmapResolution is about interior resolution of shadows. Nvidia drivers used to have issues with resolutions lower than 512. I do not know if it is still an issue today.

OK, in this case you could try the Toggle Fix, the other one from here : http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13632
With this one you can define a toggle key to disable shadow on self for those situations. [EDIT: The readme just talks about interior though...]

Be aware, you should not activate both of the fixes at the same time.

EDIT2: iShadowMapResolution=2048 could be worth another try.

I tried the automatic version. No change. Neither exterior or interior.
The iShadowMapResolution=2048 had no effect either.

The problem lies with the self-shadow I think. Since disabling that seems to solve the problem completely.
Are there any settings I could change about the self-shadow?

EDIT:
I will leave the BS Fix for sneaking (non troggle version) unused for now.

I am not aware of any. You can just turn it off.
Maybe some of your driver settings like AF, AA or mipmap details could change something.
