Sniping

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:53 pm

Quick scoping isn't aiming down the sight though, it's waving it in front of your face. That would cause so much gun wobble that the only person safe from a bullet would be the person you were aiming for.

And if you resent being killed by "Shotgun in corridor" people, Brink probably isn't the game for you. It's confirmed that the game will be more focused around close quarters rather than long range snipers. As everyone has been saying. This isn't meaning to be offensive, it's just true.

Suspend your disbelief and assume that the act of "scoping" include raising the gun to the proper position and putting the eye to the scope. I mean really that's what it's meant to represent, just because it happens extremely quickly doesn't mean the guy's spazing out, he's just really really dexterous when raising a rifle
Now if quick scoping is the act of "scoping" and then firing immediately then it should result in an improvement in accuracy. Not that it really matters as all of this has almost nothing to do with snipers in Brink.

Well I didn't say that, what the other guy meant by Shotgun in corridor I think is that it's just another situation like "guy in bushes" where once you're in that situation there's very little you can do aside from die and where the only counter is to have your own shotgun or no use the corridor. Saying that really it's just as unfun as being sniped except less aim was required on the part of the killer.
Besides close quarters doesn't mean that confrontations will be decided in enclosed areas, where the winner is the player who shoots the shotgun first. Especially given all the flanking options SMART provides. I'd like to think there will be room for the mid-range rifleman to pop a few heads.

I was meaning CQC in tight quarters, rather than hiding in bushes. Not necessarily a shotgun, or a corridor. Same as the bushes might actually be a pile of rubble.

So running around with a shotgun is a great way to get sniped.

I hate shotguns.
Anyways, if you have a large open space near a small corridor, it would make sense to snipe shotties when they want to enter that corridor. You'll spare your team a lot of problems.

True, but I hate shotguns in general. I've never used them in any game for as far as I could.

In my search for a way to kill time while waiting for Brink, I've taken to Bad Company 2's multiplayer, and I'm having a blast. And although the games won't be comparable, something annoying that occurs quite frequently in BC2 has left me worrying about the possibility of a similar situation happening in Brink.

First off - and I don't know when or why this started - the FPS community currently has an over-the-top obsession with sniping that borderlines on psychopathy. Crowds of people take their FPS experience online and foam at the mouth at the chance to pop that killer head shot at 4500 yards and upload it to youtube. On BC2, players play as the Recon class and disregard EVERYTHING else - teamwork, personal score, even the result of the match - to ditch the recon class' stated role of scouting and become "Bush Wookies" just sitting in a bush sniping enemies at long range.

I'm worried because even though Brink does not have true sniper rifles, nor vast open environments, nor the ability to kill with a single sniper shot to the head, that these people will ignore all these in-game barriers and attempt to sit in the back and film their leet sniper montages. The issue at hand is not having this play style becoming somehow viable - I'm worried that every other lobby I join in to will have several of these morons hindering their team. I know the developers can only implement so much to guide players' actions, but new posts where people ask about the effectiveness of sniping in Brink appearing on here once every few days has me dreading the possibilities. Just as we fear the seemingly inevitable swarm of Operative Anger-ninja warriors, I fear a horde of short rifle snipers joining in to lobbies and doing nothing but wasting space...

Am I just being paranoid? Does the Heavy Weapons Guy need to tell me to cry some moar? Is this a cool story bro?

I will laugh when the quickscopers try to snipe a heavy soldier with health buffs.
The game is not designed to snipe, cool montages won't be possible. In fact there are no real snipers, only rifles with a scope.
If you choose to "snipe" in this game you'll probably won't get a lot of xp either. For instance, you don't get xp multipliers for being with your team, you won't get xp multipliers for being near the objective, you won't be killing many people because you have to shoot a lot. The only thing you can do as a sniper in this game is softening up enemies by dealing some damage before they even enter combat with your team or to pick off low health enemies.

Well it might still be possable, but form the game footage shared Brink maps are too clustered to snipe from far away.

Now before the topic of the cinima comes up, the one with the dual pistols, molitov cocktails, and one hit shots, I will counter that whole thing was debunked now.

ok course people are gonna try and snipe. (About 1 percent of them are actually legit snipers) People wanna play games the way they wanna play them, and i have no problem with that. Everyone plays games to have fun, if u have fun sniping, so be it :D

It seems to me that the sniper gameplay would not make the best youtube montage for this game. If I was going to create a montage for this it would be one of me using the SMART system to do a triple backflip off a building and destroying a guy at the bottom or some other 1337 ninja move (I know its not possible but its just an example) .

I will probably use a rifle, but I may or may not snipe with it. I'll probably be behind the team softening them up or finishing some guys off if I snipe. Otherwise, I think you can rush with it. In the "last stand video" I think I saw someone rush with a rifle.

I can't wait to see guys trying quickscope in the game. Its gonna be Hilarious. Good thing this game will probably be a quickscoper's worse nightmare.

I am totally Th3 1337 Sn1p3r!!! Lol, I'm going to hide in a plant all game long and wait for that one person to walk by and trigger my claymore (i will hack a claymore if the game doesn't have them) and then I will do a quick headshot to finish them off. Because that's how I roll....

Not really, but I will definitely be switching between being fast with pistols (and knives if they're available) or going medium with an AR and mowing as many people down as I can. Sniping svcks bawls.... you sit there for hours, sometimes days watching an objective just hoping that someone important enough to shoot and give away your position comes along.... and that's still AFTER you've gotten clearance for taking the shot. Even REAL snipers don't like their job. That's why they're running around with units now, and they're being called designated marksmen. Plus, to take an optimum sniper shot (400-600yrds for a .308 round) would be severely maxing out a 50in 1080p screen. To be able to show minute movement at 500yrds at a 1:1 zoom ration would be ridiculous. The only way you could see anything would be to scan with you're high powered scope, and it could take a ton of time to scan an fairly open area at that range. No thank you, I appreciate very much that developers have done a good job to keep the realism of sniping out of games.

And please, let people do their little no scope 1-shot kills..... it's always fun to watch them miss and either get taken out by some puny sub-machine gun or pistol... or even better, a knife.

Most of what TheRealAzrael said was true, but a designated marksman is not a sniper, he has a rifle with a scope but the fact that he can fire his rifle while standing and not dislocate his shoulder is proof that he isnt a sniper. DM rifles are more powerful and accurate than assault rifles, but still retain semi automatic fire. So from a realism angle, yes a shot to the head from a sniper would almost definitely kill, you would have to lie on the ground and assemble your rifle as well as calculate a whole load of complex factors, 'Quick Scoping' would be impossible with a real sniper rifle as it would rip your arm out of its socket, or at least cause a very bad bruise.

Also on a realism note, most of the time a sniper would aim for the chest, close to the heart, as there is a smaller chance of a miss and should the target suddenly move and the bullet missed the heart, the bullet would likely be able to hit other vital organs and still kill the harget. This is true for most weapons, in a war situation, you do not have the luxury of aiming for the head, any hits to the torso or even the legs can incapacitate the enemy, which in war time is more important than getting a 'kill'.

Not to mention the fact nobody can carry a heavy bolt action sniper rifle and swing it around like it was a pistol, that is why pistols are deadly in close quaters, instead of swinging a heavy assault rifle around, you can aim a pistol much more steadily, and more often than not it only takes a single bullet.

So on the whole 'one shot kills from headshots are realistic angle', yes but only if you are willing to sit there for days, weeks or months at a time and have just about any weapon to be able to kill you in one shot.

Of course, with shooters every one has an expectation that head shots do more damage so people are instinctly aiming at the head, and on a game design point of view, having a hit to the torso be just as powerful as a headshot wouldn't be too great.

To sum up, realism isn't an arguement in terms of one shot head shot kills. Besides no one actually wants a game which is completely based on realism, where you get incapacitated in one shot and you lie on the floor and bleed to death, games are for fun and if no one shot kills makes the experience more enjoyable for more people then why not?

I consider myself among this 1%. I am not dumb, i don't quickscope, and i snipe properly (Not realism properly, gaming properly). I am legit a talented sniper and the sniper is my fav. weapon. I hope they include snipers, even if it's not a OHK with a headshot, i can use more than one.

If that's true, I applaud your skillz and I'm glad you aren't just flaming everyone for not having OHK.

My battle plan? Same as TheRealAzrael. Mid with AR, Light with Pistol/Knife/SMG. Probably everyone else will think like that as well, but I'm fine with staying in a normal class. Nothing wrong with an AR, especially if you put a nice scope on it and can perhaps do some "sniping" if you find a nice nest. Pleasantly mediocre.

The U.S. Army has begun issuing the M110 SASS (Semi-Automatic Sniper System) to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. This weapon is a based on the AR-10 rifle. The U.S. Navy has been buying a similar weapon, the SR25. This is also known as the Mk11 Sniper Rifle System (SRS). These new semi-automatic sniper rifles are 7.62mm weapons........The M110 weighs 17.3 pounds in combat,......The M110 will gradually replace the bolt-action M24 over the next few years. ........

No I would not want to run into a room trying to clear it with a 17lb rifle, but people do it all the time though. The M249 (yes it used for room clearing, I just finished OSUT and we did plenty of drills clearing rooms with those heavy ass SAW's, easily 20lbs with a full drum of ammo) is typically used as the rear weapon, not due to it's weight, but because it is less reliable than the M4. Belt fed, open bolt weapons are prone to all kinds of errors and as such, aren't well known for reliably firing every time. Bolt action rifles have been the mainstay for a sniper because they have a higher reliability out at the maximum ranges of a weapon. The military is switching to the semi-automatic weapons because it gives the shooter more firepower and thus they are a bigger force multiplier.

The ability to fire 3 shots in quick succession at a target far outweighs the minor loss of accuracy due to a switch from bolt action to semi-automatic.

And no, the only sniper rifles that big enough to "rip your shoulder off" are the .50's. They are not meant to shoot people, they are anti-material weapons. Granted, we frequently use them to shoot the "equipment" off of enemy combatants, but that's just our own special way of working around NATO rules. The main reason we use .50's is because they have a much longer range than the 7.62 (or .308, depending on who you're talking to) and they work great on vehicles. Even with that massive round being shot out of the weapon, most sniper rifles (.50's included) have so many modifications to reduce the recoil that it is not uncomfortable to shoot them. Granted, a .50 still kicks more than it's smaller counterparts, but due to advances in science and technology, they have found many ways to minimize that "punch" so that you could legitimately fire it from a standing position and not be knocked down.

Just some food for thought. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle ;)

Indeed. Also can we simply keep the discussion on sniping in Brink. Its about balance and fun not realism.

Amen to that! As for sniping, it would be nice if there was a slower, more powerful rifle though. Obviously not a OHK, but a 3HK over the same time as a standard magazine would be nice. That way those engineers and medics could still throw in a couple shots in a firefight when they're not doing their other stuff and still contribute significantly. It's always fun to have a weapon that takes more skill in shot placement instead of just pointing it directly at the enemy and holding down the fire button. Plus, giving some players the ability to stay far away and still be dangerous makes playing with SMG's and pistols that much more challenging and enjoyable to play with.
