Stuck on Lost Spires : IV

So I'm downloading Lost Spires, and I'm at the part where I'm supposed to clear out a path in the cave for everyone else so they can excavate (in other words, it's the first REAL assignment in the Archeology guild, as opposed to just meeting all the guild members).

However, when I actually GET to the cave, the map marker doesn't change. It just points me back to the outside of the cave. Ok, maybe that was a development error. So, I go in there, and I kill all the monsters I see. They mostly consist of bears, lions, and tiger... oops, I mean, savage ogres. Maybe that's just because I'm level 50, but hey, it's all good.

Ok, I've killed them all. What's next? Why isn't my quest updating? Isn't that what I'm supposed to do?

It's a long time since I played this mod but I'm pretty sure I got stumped at the same place!

Despite your orders I believe you have to pick up an object to continue the quest, I'm afraid that's about as specific as my memory will allow

edit. Just checked http://www.lostspires.com/pages/faqs.htm and it is how I thought.

Q: I’ve cleared out the first Spire and my quest won’t update.

A: At the end of the Newfound Spire you will find a large second chamber. In this chamber, up a set of stairs, sits a quest item on a pedestal. Pick up the item to trigger a journal update.
