Dragon Shouts and Magic?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 7:07 am

Hey, I sort of know what dragon shouts are, but could someone explain them in more depth for me please.

But my main reason for opening this topic is the question: Will there be magic as well as Dragon shouts?

I know dragon shouts are magic, (one can summon you a dragon), but will we have magic as seen in Oblivion as well as Dragon shouts? because if not, only twenty shouts leaves us rather limited in the magic department.

There's going to be mage magic like in the previous games. The dragon shouts are something new on top of that that all characters can use.

Personally, Id say seeing as the dragons have their own language, the dragon shouts should optionally be used using voice command using the microphne!!!!!

No.

The only reason I wouldn't like them to add it is that it would take a lot of effort to implement a good voice recognition system. It would be nice not having to assign dragon shouts to hotkeys though.

Yea, being in a heated battle on the verge of death and not having the voice input recognize what you are saying would be lame.

Of course, I usually relaoded to get what I wanted ;) HOpe I don't need to relaod my dragon kill finsishing move every time ;)

Yeah, cell phones have given me a deep seated hatred for voice recognition software.

Phone: "please say a command"
Me: "call John"
Phone: "did you say call Pam?"
Me: "no"
Phone: "please say a command"
Me: "call John"
Phone: "did you say call Mom?"
Me: "no"
Phone: "please say a command"
Me: "call John"
Phone: "did you say call Leon?"
Me: "NO SCREW YOU PHONE ILL JUST USE THE DAMN CONTACT LIST"

Still, I wouldn't mind it so much as a completely optional way of using the dragon shouts, unless it really tore into the dev time.

You want to undermine all the hard work, time and energy bethesda used to make voices for every race and gender for the Dragon Shouts of which potentially cut out other features like maybe a city or two as well as every arena save for one in Skyrim as it did in Oblivion, that COULD have been spent doing something else so you can scream at your TV/Computer.......

What I'm more worried about is how magic will manage to compete with dragon shouts, so far they seem pretty amazing, though I suppose the cooldown might be long enough that you can't use them very often.

I imagine Dragon Shouts are basically just going to be Greater Powers that you learn. That may just be the pessimist in me talking, but I sure do hope I am wrong.

Silence!

No really...silence. That spell could very well be the bane of the dragon. If silence can stop a wife from talking her mouth off...it can stop a dragon from saying a word to summon fire. :P Not to mention if its true dragon's really fly due to magic...well silence would send them crashing to the ground.

Now...if you're talking about a mage who has both a dragon shout and magic...personally I see dragonshouts more as support. Slow down time to slow mo blast your enemies with fire balls? Teleport behind the enemy to smack them in the back with a lightning spell? Push them over to give you enough time to recharger your magicka? Yes please.

I wonder how the magic and shout system will differ. What sets them apart and make each system interesting. So if shouts have a cooldown time, what does magic have? Instant or sleep based regeneration? Shouts are a brilliant way of equipping non magic characters with some sort of magic, while giving it a natural "reason". So what happens with a pure mage, does he become overpowered (wrt convenience) once again, compared to fighters and thieves? Or is magic toned down or made more costly?

Oh well, it's gonna be interesting to see what they come up with to make it a good balanced game. :)
