Journal Please!

3rd of Sun's Dawn
Today I started my day off with a hunt.
It started raining mudcrabs.
Had lunch.
Found a cave that was hidden behind some random rock on the Throat Of The world.
Ate A Pie.
Found out that Sheogorath is dead.
Had some mead.
Killed A Dragon.
Ok that should be enough

I think it would be a great roleplaying tool to play with if the players could have a journal that they could write in, in-game! I know there have been mods that do this, what do you think?

I would love to see this in vanilla Skyrim, as I can't really have mods on the 360. I think it would, as you said, be an excellent roleplaying tool, as many of us like to imagine that our characters have more depth and a story that goes well beyond the scope of the game. As an actor who doesn't get to act very much anymore, this would, in some ways, allow me to at least imagine myself as my character better. It would be fun. :P

Yes, I have long wanted this ability in TES.

It just seems useless to me. You want to know what would be the ultimate thing in immersion and realism? Go write stuff down on a piece of paper/notebook/journal. It's so immersive, It feels like you are actually writing!

So it's too hightech to use pen and paper of your own like I do? It'd only take more time to have it in the game, unless on PC, because writing on the PS3/Xbox without keyboard takes a lot more time than writing on your own.

Agreed, not everything has to be contained in-game. I would personally find it far better to have an actual paper notebook and a pen in front of me instead of having to navigate to some sub-menu when I need to make or read a note. You can use that to roleplay if you want and it will even have actual handwriting instead of incredibly neat print text.

I have been playing RPGs for years. The relatively recent advent of the game keeping track of your important quests is a new one on me. However (and I play on the PC with the keyboard and all that) I still take pen and paper notes on the game I am playing and refer to them in the game more so than the ingame Journal.

Even on the PC, I think I user Journal would be a bit cumbersome. And, as mentioned would not be of much help to non keyboard console players. But, if it was there, I would not complain, I just would not use it.

I'd be for having an electronic journal tha tI could write notes in below quest entries. Annotatble map markers as well.

regarding paper and notebooks, those can get lost, reused by artistic 6 year olds, adds more clutter, don't have room for it in my recliner and laptop...

But I'd be really surprised if it happens....

Bethesda might as well just make a Pen and Paper version of Skyrim.

I for one got really annoyed by forgetting where i put things in oblivion, like if certain objects were too heavy for me to carry i dropped them and forgot where they were. I think writing this sort of thing down in a journal would be great or putting notes on map markers.

Here's an idea: There's an in-game journal, but it gets written automatically whenever the player does something significant. It would work by procedurally combining certain words and phrases, and also adding in a certain amount of random interjections and perhaps grammatical mistakes.

So I guess it would be like the standard quest journal, except it would record both scripted and non-scripted events. Does that make any sense?

So for example:

3 Sun's Dawn - I walked the 7000 steps and fought the giant troll guarding the...etc. (this is scripted)

but then later you go through a non-quest related dungeon:

5 Sun's Dawn - I was saddened to discover that Icy Cave was once again overrun with giant mudcrabs. I was forced to dispatch them for the 37th time.

Well, all of Bethesda's games that you can mod have this feature...they are just player mods. EQ2 has the ability for people to write books. The first online game I played where you can write things down that others can read was Asherons Call.

Nah, I'd look silly throwing dice at my computer!
And PnP really doesn't use that much P nor P

Now to the topic, they really need to make an editor where one could write with the mouse or touchpad...that way even the Kinect could be used ;)

This would be a nice thing to include in the game, but sadly I'd never use it.

For the PC this is a great idea, unfortunatly this would be under used on the consoles as there is a lack of a keyboard and to use the controller to type is to time consuming for me anyway.

I used to use the Mod in Morrowind that allowed you to write notes in a book that you carried in you inventory. Which was a great roleplaying tool.

Kyoma's Journal Mod has been a necessity for my Oblivion experience since the day I downloaded it, so yes.

For the 'why not use pen and paper' crowd...
First, I'd rather read text than my own handwriting, sad but true. Also, I can type much faster than I can write, generally.
Second, it allows for the possibility of customizable macros, to where repetitive chunks of text (header, date, time, etc) can be auto-added with a ctrl-key, either in vanilla or later with OBSE.
Third, I like things like that to be encapsulated in the world. It's just cleaner and more effective to the experience, IMO.

Why not.. but this would never work on consoles. and like someone here said, you can just write it down on a piece of paper irl, or maybe i could do it on my laptop since i despise my handwriting.

on a computer with 2 monitors can the game be played on one monitor while a word processing app is open on the other monitor? or will the 2nd monitor shut down during gameplay?

i thought the xbox 360 did have a keyboard. isnt there one available that attaches to the controller?

My characters would use this feature, if included.

About the other platforms, with the technology available today, I don't see why a keyboard simulator could not be developed for playstation and Xbox.
