Dark upon Entry

OK this is my first actual problem while using FCOM so far but I don't think it has anything to do with that, and it's not a CTD more like a dear screen...kinda...thing :glare:

Its happened twice in two different places, basically when you enter a building,shop,cave it cuts to the loading screen when that finishes the screen goes black then your game comes back...mine doesn't and it happened first then I was in the back in Market District using better cities and the second was on the fire mission for the fighters guild at Cheydinhal taking the weapons to The Desolaet Mine, after entering the screen just stays black.

All other places I've been to in Cheydinhal and Imperial City excluding the Bank are fine so far it's just those two places...I do have a feeling there might be more though.

1. Can you still see your menus?

2. If you leave another application running (like an Explorer window or the like), are you able to alt+tab out of the game?

3. Do you have the nVidia Fog Fix built into your bashed patch?

No can't see no menus, you can still hear all the sound of all the wind and drips and all that but cant pause, enter inventory nothing, I can CTRL, ALT,DEL out of the game but not sure abouot ALT,TAB because I ain't tried it and no I'm not using the nVidia Fog Fix because I assumes that was a nVidia issue and my cards ATI so didn't think it was for me.

I'll check that threat now, hopefully they found a fix.

Tried switching to bloom lighting but that had no effect, and like I said I have a ATI card so the bash options won't be much use to me...any other ideas?

Sounds to me like your video driver is crashing, which could be sheer resource overload on your hardware, or could be a problem with the card, or could be a faulty mesh or texture in the specific locations you're loading into.

Rule out faulty mesh or texture: Is it location-specific? If not:

Rule out resource overload: In the console, type "tdt" then "sdt 13". Have a look at the value "texture mem" (I think). Is it near or more than your video card's memory (like, more than 512MB on a 512MB card)?

If by location specific you mean to one area then no because the back was in the Market District and the cane is a short walk from Cheydinhal, I'll do that console check tomorrow as it's now time I got some shut eye but my card has 1GB on each GPU so I doubt it's a overload but I'll check to be sure and come back with what it says.

EDIT:

There's a driver update for my video card available as well so I'll also pop that in.

Probably not resource overload then, at least in that area. You need to go to the places that give you the most trouble, and check there, to be sure.

Did updating your video driver make the problem go away?

The new drivers never did fix that problem and what's now even more weird is I started a new game, it was still happening in the bank in the Market District, using alternative start just went to the sewers to pick up the amulet and now it's happening with the sewers...and that's a NEW game! :confused:

Just ripped out all the mods and deleted the Oblivion folder along with the ini and gona start over from my FCOM back up...gona coc to the sewers and that cave to see if it's still happening.

I had a similar problem way back when I fast traveled. Did not figure it out. Isn't there an nvidia screen fix in wrye bash? or is that really outdated?

Foiled again! Is that even a word? OK, so figure the game is sor of frozen then since you do not even see the menus. This happened to me once last week but a ctrl+alt+delete and a new load fixed it for me. So what was the last change you made to the game before this started?

But the third one which was the sewers I had removed Artifacts mod, diversegrass and the bubbles fx mod for underwater...in the last game it was fine because I had already picked up the amulet before my crash problem started but go there this time with Vilja as I did last time I get the black screen freeze and yeah as you said it is a freeze because nothing responds but you can still hear all the atmosphere of the sewers so as you had to do CTRL,ALT,DEL out and end process.

Gona check it again shortly with just FCOM loaded and check if it's any different..

Try without the alternate start mod. Get skip tutorial instead or do the tutorial.

Done it without the alternative start mod and just coc to the locations and they loaded fine, exited Desolaet Mine and re-entered and again it loaded fine...so what does that tell us...there's a possible mod causing the game to freeze when loading some locations? (that would be a bit of a funny one considering it started happening to a place where it didn't happen before). Or is it going to end up being one of them unsolved mysteries where some believe it to be a act of nature :confused:

Just open the console, and type the command "cal" int he dark area. Voila! Your problem is solved.

Just finished reinstalling my mods and going through the tutorial dungeons this time, and as I entered one of the door I ran in to the same problem AGAIN! Only this time I decided to disable ALL mods and then coc to it to see if it actually was a mod causing the problem and it was.

Going through them activating a hand full at a time I found what one it was causing the problem and it's the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25835. It supposed to give lots of different was to contract diseases but if I remember correctly it's not the first time that mods given me problem so don't think I'll be using it again. :down:

But yeah think this problem is solved now so all is well :)
