Will you purchase a Player's Guide along with Skyrim?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 12:17 pm

I will not be buying a guide book and here is why, I want to explore the world myself on my first playthrough and I will consult the internet after that for a free way to find all the things I missed.

Probably, I don't think the ES wikia is as good as the Fallout wikia so I won't be looking up a lot of things there.
Will have it just in case.

I'll use the UESP wiki if I'm stuck and after I've played the game from beginning to end twice or so to check if there are things that I have missed.

I won't buy a guide 'along with' Skyrim, but I will buy one eventually. For me, one of the major draws of the ES series is being completely clueless when I start off. After a couple of playthroughs, I'll run to HalfPrice Books so I can investigate all the nooks and crannies that I missed.

Absolutely not. As others have said, I'd prefer to discover things for myself.

Why should I buy a guide when I can just use

http://www.uesp.net

Or heck even better the forum itself. Strategy Guides will be extinct within the next 6 years because of the internet.

Those little details that you may miss add replayability to the game, the reason why replays are so rewarding in themselves. Every playthrough is a different experience... unless you consult a guide and experience everything the first time, which itself defeats the entire purpose of the game in my opinion. I strongly recommend against using a playerguide to the OP.

i voted yes before i realised what the question was (though it was a players guide as in pocket guide to the empire" though the guide helped me in new vegas and i didnt feel anything at all like cheating. I probably will buy it due to the fact i dont trust uesp anymore (bad arena/daggerfall memories)

Nah. It kind of ruins the game for me. Seriously, it destroys most aspects of the game for me. If I absolutely have to know something, I'll go to the UESP.

The only game guide I ever bought is the Daggerfall guide, simply because it got a little lore stuff in there that isn't available in the game. I have a few more guides that I recived as gifts, but I never used them :P

Buying the game to play it, not watch a movie. Likewise, I won't be reading the "script" you mention either. ;)

On a related tangent, we often get people harping for "the good old days" when games had longer playtimes. Maybe- just maybe- games would have longer playtimes again if people stopped paying extra money for a walkthrough on release day, hmmmmm?

I don't think it would make a jot of difference, Alois.
Among my collection of secondhand CRPGs is the SSI CD compilation: Eye Of The Beholder I, II and III. In the box was also the SSI Hint Book and walkthrough for Eye Of The Beholder I. AFAIK, that Hint Book was released same time as the game.
What I think WOULD make a difference in how long games go for, is if devhouses stopped trying to make and market CRPGs at the casual console gamer.

The online UESP Wiki is an excellent resource, but I will still buy the book guide if it's the same quality as Oblivion.

Yes, I'll buy one to be a part of my collection of TES memorablia. :tes: However, it won't be opened and looked at until I've exhausted myself playing the game an infinite number of iterations on multiple characters!

I'll be honest, I was one of those guys that used to think that using a player's guide was an accepted form of cheating in video games. It wasn't until I was given an Oblivion player's guide on my second play through of the game that I realized all the little things I had missed the first time I had played. Sure enough, when Fallout 3 was released I picked up a players guide along with a copy of the game. But here I am once again in anticipation of upcoming Skyrim that I am faced with the decision again....A part of me thinks that a great deal of the fun comes from discovering the intricacies of the game on my own...but I also run the risk of missing out on certain details that the Player's Guide would provide.

Alas, I probably will play through the game on my own the first time and use the Player's Guide on my second play through. But I'm curious to hear your opinion on using Player's Guides with video games (in particular with Skyrim).

Whad'ya think?

Well, before the internet was widespread (back on my N64 playing Zelda) this was a good idea. Now you can get more/better guides online, free. The only advantage to the official guides (that cost 20-25 dollars) is that you can use them as bathroom reading.

No. I like to explore things on my own. And if I want to look something up, there's always the UESP.

I buy the player's guide, but I rarely use it. I don't like to read while playing, as it would completely ruin the game. But I have it just in case I really need to look something up, and I just like the added insight I can get from it at times. And because I just really like books. :read:

Plus, I want to collect all things Elderscrolls. :tes:

Never, it would probably svck the fun right out of the game for me personally, one of the major things that draws me into this series so much is NOT knowing what to expect or what i'm going to find.

I believe if i had a guide i'd lose that exciting child like feeling i get when playing these sort of games for the first couple of times.

Once i have played through a few times its straight to the mods and in to the construction set for me.

Voted HELL NO.

Why?

1) It's Idiotic to ruin the exitement and mystery of a game with a guidebook.

2) Free guidebooks all over the internet within a month of game release.
