This is a relief, they're actually better.

Huge animation improvement.

Every game really is a leap ahead of the last.

Aside from the animation, anyone still saying "SKyrim totally still like totally looks like, just like Oblivion still totally" needs to look at that video. They look like completely different games when put side-by-side.

The animation does look a lot better. What struck me the most was the graphical leap. How can anyone say this is only a minor upgrade?

The animation looks very nice, yes.
About the graphics leap: obviously it's a big improvement over OB here. The lighting (I'm not talking about dynamic shadows) however doesn't look improved at all in some screenshots: http://skyrimguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SkyrimTrailer3.jpg
Imo lighting is one of the most important things that makes a game look graphically beautiful. Therefore, I find that Skyrim's graphical leap isn't so big as it could have been, with better lighting. The lighting is swifting though. It does look really beautiful in some Skyrim screenshots, like the fall forest one. But in a lot of other screenshots... I'd say no.

If we also compare how Skyrim looks to other games, the graphical leap isn't very big for 2011

Skyrim moves look very smooth. A little Assassins Creed-ish with the clothing and everything.

the ugliest things about oblivion's animations were these:

1) when walking in diagonal the walking\running animation was the same was walking straight instead of making the legt pivot to the sides. it gave a horrible amateurish feeling of floating\sliding.

2) the melee animations were cr@p because the animations where only for the arms while in reality (and in every other action game out there) the entire body is a part of the swing of a weapon. from head to toes. not just the arms. it is a problem making the entire body move in melee combat when u must consider 1st person camera as well so i really hope this issue will be resolved in SR. i plan on playing in 3rd person only.

Can't agree with you on that.

Skyrim is the first major game to use Havok Behavior, so I can't wait to see the animations. I believe it came out in 2008, so it's pretty much state-of-the-art tech.

Ah! Here we go.

"Characters now transition more realistically between walking, jogging, and running"

Sweet. Thank you.

Do you have a link to these vids ,sounds interesting.

http://www.youtube.com/user/HavokAnimation
http://www.youtube.com/user/HavokBehavior

any of the vids by them. All good examples. The animation isn't as tuned as we see in Skyrim because they are just sample demos but the capabilities are astounding.

I've heard somewhere that Bethesda has a motion capture studio. It's nice that they are fully using it now.

I know that skyrim has improved animations, but you really see improvement in this video.

Wow, thank you for the link! I can really see it, thanks to the side-by-side view. This makes me :)
