Survival Mod Recommendation?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 6:08 am

Can anyone recommend a good survival mod that operationalizes hunger, thirst, and sleep if not also more realistic fatigue?

I've been using that old survival mod http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=24079 for many many hours of play. I never found a newer one that I liked as much as Tyler's. It has its flaws for sure but overall I like how it works.

I did not like Vim and Vigor and I understand from the Time Manager readme that it tends to fight with VV.

One of them is: if you buy a bedroll, open it, then go off and leave it and forget where it is, then buy another one and try to open it, you'll get an error message saying "You've already opened your bedroll."

In the past I've fixed this by: (i) closing the game; (ii) deactivating Tyler's HTST in OBMMM; (iii) reopen the save and move to a new cell; (iv) save a new save and exit game; (v) reactivate HTST in OBMM; (vi) restart the save and either repurchase the Bedroll and Wellkey or additem them using the console.

I recently tried to follow this procedure and every time I get to step (vi) the load bar gets about 1/5th progressed and then just sits there. I defragged my machine last night, though I have not tried to get HTST rerunning again, I'm currently runing without it. Playing this game without a surival mod that forces me to eat, drink and sleep is just not fun.

I'm going to see if deactiving Time Manager and then reactivating HTST can get it working again, but HTST is so old, maybe there is a better option?

I'm now thinking maybe the Tyler mod got corrupted? Is that possible? It does the same freeze up while loading the save even with Time Manager deactivated.

I suppose deleting the Tyler mod and perhaps recreating it in OBMM might be warranted?

ADDIT: I deactivated Time Manager and a couple other mods. Redownloaded HTST, and recreated it in OBMM. Started a new game and that seemed to work fine.

Then tried to load my old save file from the game I've been playing 20-some odd hours with HTST running and it still showed the same problem. Appreciate any pointers on how I might riddle through this and get HTST to run again with the old save file, OR an alternative survival mod.

Until then, I guess I'll just keep going without the need to eat, sleep or drink :(

Hey!

I can't comment on Tyler's mod as I never used it.

I can, however, suggest you try tejon's http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1162461-relz-bare-necessities/. You might want to inquire in the thread if it's fully compatible with Time Manager, but since it takes into account the fact that you ate just as you do it (in the inventory screen), I'm thinking they should work together.

It doesn't treat thirst - it's just food and sleep. You can try convincing tejon to add it in :P I guess the main problem is there's no real source of water in the game. Maybe if it were made to work with Shad's http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30087...

For fatigue, I'm currently using Realistic Fatigue and I'm quite please with it. Had no problems with the two of them fighting so I can think of no reason why you wouldn't use both.

Alternatively, I would suggest TheNiceOne's http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1164073-theniceones-nice-to-have-mods/. I didn't personally use this one, but I really like TNO's work and I'm fully confident the mod works like a charm. If you choose to use that, you can disable the sleep part of Bare Necessities so that it only deals with hunger.

Hope this helps!

Edit: Check with TNO about Real Sleep Extended's compatibility with Time Manager!

Timer Manager and Real Sleep Extended both come with a dynamic time feature, but fortunately, both mods allow you to disable that feature, so keep the one you like best and disable the other. They both have some advantages over the other, so which one you prefer is pretty subjectibe.

Regarding bedrolls, I am pretty confident that Real Sleep Extended's bedroll feature is the best bedroll mod out there. It should give you no problem, and is also the only one (AFAIK) that is automatically 100% compatible with See You Sleep.

Cool thanks guys! Will try real sleep and then work from there.

TNO, since you are such a skilled and accomplished modder, could I hope to have any success if I implored you to check out that old Tyler's Hungry, Thirsty, Sleepy Tired mod and either (a) get me going on updating/improving it; or (B) adopt any ideas/code from it into one of your mods; or © update it?

Here is what I like(d) about that mod:
1. Hunger, thirst and sleep and fatigue (more like Morrowind) all in one mod.
2. Deals with the "no water in Cyrodil" problem in a very efficient way. Adds an object called "Water" which can be summoned using a spell called "Get Water" (Lesser Power). This Lesser power is enabled by ownership of a "Well Key" which is added into the sales items of the General Stores in the game.

The weakness here is that, you cannot get water from bodies of water, only from vanilla wells. I assume that those wells have some sort of special setting applied to them.

3. Eating was pretty straightforward, but the thing I like in comparison to some other mods is that, it didn't just automatically remove food from your inventory. You got a message that you were hungry and then if you ate enough food your "disease" "malnutrition" went away. (thirst, and sleep deprivation were also handled as "diseases"). You could always go into your active effects and see if you had one of those afflictions.

4. Sleep: bedrolls purchased from general stores enable two lesser powers "open" and "close" bedrolls. This worked well except for two things. (a) no quest to "remember" where you left your bedroll open if you went off and forgot it, combined with the inability to own two at once; (B) cannot sleep anytime you want, must wait till enough time has elapsed for you to be tired. The two problems with the bedrolls were the most annoying.

Nope, no chance. I'm not that interested in hunger/thirst mods, and is pretty happy with Real Sleep Extended and consider it done. I can possibly help with specific questions, but have no motivation for starting to look into that mod in general.

I'll just ask you to try Real Sleep Extended's bedrolls feature instead. It allows you to buy bedrolls from general vendors, but also to pick up any bedroll in the world by just tapping "P" (can be changed in the ini) while looking at the bedroll. To sleep in the one you carry, you just drop it from your inventory - and then pick it up again later if you want to. If you forget to pick it up, you just have to find another bedroll to pick up instead...

I use Time Manager myself, in fact. :)

Not going to happen, and while the technical difficulties are what stops me from adding it "just because," they're not why it's absent from the main design. Mechanically, hunger and thirst are basically the same thing. The option of a different sort of hunger replacing the normal sort (vampirism) is interesting. The option of adding an extra type of hunger in exchange for power (The Serpent in Birthsigns Expanded) is interesting. But two different, simultaneous, mandatory forms of hunger for no extra reward... that's just micromanagement, and I'm not into it.

That does make sense. I find myself in agreement.

Thanks for the responses guys! :)

Given it is a highly unrealistic game, in myriad ways (e.g., I can run all the way around the whole "kingdom" in about one day) maybe I'm just delusional. But I just enjoy having to carry my food and drink and actually click on it to consume it and maintain my toons well-being. In real life, if you don't eat or drink, or sleep, you will suffer progressive deficiencies. I just enjoy a game that incorporates that dynamic.

If I had tenure already, I'd ask you guys to let me try to incorporate some of your mods stuff and create an integrated basic needs mod in which each component could optionally be turned on/off. By the time I get tenure and feel enough freedom to get into modding, Skyrim will probably be pretty far advanced into patches and mods, so this will probably never happen.

But couldn't hurt to try to get some of you guys to do it! ;)

Pff, folks around here don't care about "tenure." New modders are always welcome, and most of us are happy to let you build from our work as long as you ask first and give credit. And I'm not really worried about Skyrim killing the Oblivion mod scene... it's not like Oblivion killed Morrowind!

Well, I don't use Time Manager, and never have, but I did start a thread along similar lines, some months ago: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1097149-hunger-thirst-and-sleep-oh-my/

Hopefully, it will be of some use to you as well.

Good luck. :)
