Level Up System

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 12:52 am

I don't see how sleeping is a "realistic" way to level up.

It completely breaks immersion I think. And it's so arbitrary.

In real life there are no "levels". Levels should simply be "behind the scenes" aggregates of (perhaps hidden) skills and attributes. In real life you have skills (like swordfighting) and you have attributes (like strength) but there is no equivalent of a level. It should be that way in the game too, levels if they exist should just be calculated on the fly from attributes and skills. And attributes and skills should automatically increase depending on what you do.

Basically I really like the way the nGCD mod handles leveling. It feels very natural.

What does the poll option "automatic" mean?

I'm guessing it means what I tried to describe above.

So of course I voted for Automatic.

Whenever someone suggests lvling up should be separate to sleeping in TES, just ask yourself the simple question - why do we sleep IRL?

As for the religion thing, the difference is that Gods actually do exist in Tamriel...

I see what you're saying. The arbitrary number assigned to represent your physical and mental progress. Unfortunately, since you need a visible "check point" to acquire perks, Level up has to fill that roll for now.

That said, if we have to, I really do like the "Sleeping" method. It's like you take time to reflect on what you've learned in your recent travels, and greet the new day with that knowledge.

If that's what automatic would entail then I wouldn't want it to be like that.

Why?

some just want to see a lvl up screen to have the sense of accomplishment. without that screen it feels like there is no character progression/improvement. yes, quests and storyline are moving along but i'm no different than i was when i started......that sort of thing. just guessing though.

Why?

Not enough control.

With nGCD in Oblivion you get the accomplishment from increasing skills. But yes, you have to peak at the level or attribute tabs to see what they are.

After using nGCD it just feels so natural, I never felt the need to go back to the original leveling systems.

Also Skills can contribute to multiple attributes which also seems natural. If you block for example, you might be improving endurance, but it also helps with your strength and agility, but maybe to a lesser extent.

Not enough control.

Understood. But if you want more control, it could be like the Fallout 3 system. With that system you can max out (for example) Big Guns to 100 without ever firing a big gun! That's great control - but not very realistic.

Not enough control.

but what's to control? your skills progress/advance and get better the more you use them. why do you need to go to a screen and say i want +1 strength? the natural way things work should say that by performing certain skills/actions, your strength automatically increases. strength is just an example but it's the same with almost any attribute i can think of.

Attributes may have been nixed, so the level up could be a mix of both sleeping and automatic.

If I need to sit on a toilet to level up, I'll do it without concern.

As long as I get that level, I really don't care about the mechanic involved in triggering that screen.

One of the best, and driest lines I've seen in a long time! :)

As to the topic, I agree with others who don't really care. As long as stats and abiliteis progress, I'll be happy

I like having to sleep to level up.
It lets me think about what I want to improve when I level up whereas in other games where I can level up right when I'm capable, I end up choosing the wrong thing in the moment.

Sleeping.

I don't really care if we have to sleep or if it's instant, I'm sure Todd and BGS have thouhgt about it and desided which way fits Skyrim the best :)

But it doesn't make sense to suddenly get a level in a dungeon..

I'd like the game pause when player level up, i know this (the game) is not trying to be so realistic but, when you learn to ride a bike you dont need to sleep to ride it the next day, you just ride it the day you learned.

P.D.: Sry for repeating the words so much

Sleeping as classical, and nice to see some Message Box dream :snoring: :cold: :obliviongate: :shocking: :bolt: .
But with ability to sleep anywhere where is safe place and no enemies around, enemies can disturb player sleeping, sneaky enemies can poison or make critical strike, steal some gold, drink some blood and spread vampirism at player, guards can say get out if player try sleep in some public places as well as cell owner can say the same if has low disposition toward to player, sleeping outside isn't the same as sleeping in comfortable bed in inn or home, so player can catch some disease, be ambushed, and not fully restore his parameters by sleeping in such conditions.

I think that the sleeping to level up makes sense, Its a natural way for your body to recover and you brain to develop on things learnt that day.

Also its a constant in TES games, similar to the game starting with the Player in prison (or equivalent)

As the voting shows it is the minority choice for readers of the forums.

enough said :)

what i like is Sleeping and Press button Level up menu appears if it's to hard to find a bed inside i would just press the button to level up
This game should also make sleeping outside harder like when you sleep outside you have a Chance you can get poisoned
Get Vampirism
Gold and items can be stolen
Getting Critical Strike/Attacked
Get Diseases

And Sleeping to gain levels is the most realistic way of doing it, and it should stay that way.

This.
