CTD every 5-10 minutes. Can anyone help?

First off, let me get a few things out of the way. I'm comfortable with using Wrye Bash (v2.91) & OBMM (v1.1.12), & I use both to manage my mods (though 95% are managed with BAIN). I know about mods, & have made a few myself (I've been around since the Morrowind days, and going by the screen name Devlor, I worked with Grumpy in creating the companion script there, before he passed).

I have painstakingly ordered my BAIN installation packages, basing my installation order on http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=my_bain_package_list.

I let BOSS, updated with the latest masterlist, handle my load order. I have studied my BOSS logs, & made any recommended changes.

I have carefully read every readme in the mods I use, & have followed all instructions.

I have cleaned those mods that needed cleaning with TES4Edit. Exception: I did not touch those that had mod dependencies (like patch esps).

I have followed all advice concerning Wrye Bash usage and bashed patch configuration detailed by the latest http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35230, & from what I have gleaned in Wrye Bash’s latest readme.

I have been very careful in keeping what mods I have installed up to date, so every one I have should be the latest version (including all OBSE plugins, utilities, etc.). The OBSE plugins that I currently use are: Custom Spell Icons, Elys Universal Silent Voice 093, Fast Exit 20, MenuQue 70, Oblivion Stutter Remover 4116, & Pluggy dev132. I have experimented with older versions of Pluggy, including Pluggy 125c & Pluggy dev128. I also have sometimes enabled Windom Earles Oblivion Crash Prevention System 3282009 to see if that helps. It only makes things worse, for when I have used it, it resulted in corrupted saves.

I am careful not to overwrite saved games. Instead I save in a new slot every time using the menu (because Streamsave wasn't helping, nor was FastSave).

Finally, all of my hardware drivers & BIOS are fully up to date. I am running the game on a Windows XP (fully updated) box with 4 GB of memory & an ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 512 MB video card.

When starting my latest attempt at a new game, I methodically enabled just one mod at a time, saved, exited, enabled the next mod, etc. This alone took over a hundred saves.

With all that being said, I still have very frequent crashes, on the order of about every five to ten minutes. Sometimes this results in corrupted saves (when using weOCPS). It’s gotten to where I can hardly stand to play anymore, since I seem to be forever backtracking after crashes. I’m very near my wit’s end with trying to get this game to work with the mods that I want.

Can anyone please help?

Your getup looks very well thought out and looks like you put alot of thought into it. But also variables. Heh. I am honestly not a fan of turning each mod on separately because it takes a long time and does not guarantee results. I'm going to assume everything is installed correctly. Try disabling all of your mods, and run a vanilla oblivion. (Wether with or without custom textures is whatever) Point is to start very low, and when you can run that for longer than 15 mins, add half your major mods, then rebuild bashed patch. If you can play that without crashing, then disable all of those mods and enable the other half of your major mods and rebuild bashed patch. Then add all major mods and rebuild and test. If by some miracle that runs then add in half of the rest, and then later the other half. Basically you need alot of time to play around with it, or somebody to have had a similar experience who would have some smart things to say. Good luck heh.

Hrm...the only thing I can suggest is to try cleaning the mods. I didn't see you list that in your usage steps and "dirty edits" could be a cause of your crashes.

Try uninstalling all the Giskaard mods and see if the problem persists. They're not built to play well with others.

I suggest you roll back to an earlier version of Pluggy, unless you absolutely need the latest dev version. Also, update OSR to the latest WIP and enable the experimental stuff. That helped with my CTD's immensely.

cInfidel: I am afraid that I will need to do just that. After spending two months (since November) trying to get this setup working (through a lot of trial & error, restarts when I read a revised technique, etc.), my patience is finally starting to wane, so I'm hoping not to have to go back to square one again. Still, you may be right, & I may end up doing that if no better alternative presents itself.

webrunner: I did, in fact, clean what mods needed cleaning. I neglected to mention that in my post, so I'll edit it in. Most mods were already clean, but those that needed it got the TES4Edit treatment.

gothemasticator: I suspected those, given that nearly every one of the esps there needed cleaning, & make some sweeping changes. I was hoping that they were better behaved, given the pains the authors went through in attempting maximum compatibility with other mods (according to their readmes). I will try that & see how that works. Thanks for the tip.

What version of Pluggy do you suggest? I have 125c & dev128 already.

I already have OSR updated to the latest WIP, but I haven't enabled any experimental options. Which of those would you suggest, that work for you?

I had this problem a while back with frequent CTDs even though I followed the steps you have outlined (except I never bothered with the whole activate one mod at a time nonsense).
The solution for my setup was the 4BG patch with OSR with iHeapAlgorithm = 5 and iHeapSize = 1024 . After I applied it, I only crash very rarely (max once every third hour) and when i crash it's always in the transition between cells (eg. going through a door).
I also use almost every mod by giskard and has never experienced any CTD related problem with those mods, but I did clean them.

Are you using cbash from the latest version? This has cause my game to CTD everytime I left the IC. I think it is still being worked on. Other than that cleaning does not guarantee anything. Yoiu could have a bad file in one of your mods. Do the CTDs happen everywhere? Is there a pattern?

The safest version of Pluggy would, of course, be 125c. But I'm running 128 because mods I use require it, and haven't had any issues with CTD's because of it.

As for OSR: enable the experimental stuff. But the exact settings are going to depend on you rig. If you have a dual core, leave everything at the default. If you have a quad core, iReduceLongSleep to 1 and set iThreadsFixedToCPUs to 1. Note that these settings also apply if you have a CPU that has hyper threading. If you have more than 4 cores, I'm not sure. The OSR thread has an explanation of what the proper settings are. It's in the last thread, not the current.

Thanks everyone, for your helpful input. I tried the various suggestions on tweaking the OSR ini, & read the entire (latest) OSR thread for additional insights. I tried different heap algorithms (all worked for me, but TBBMM felt the smoothest), & enabled the experimental stuff (leaving the values at default, as recommended by Malonn, since I have a dual core Intel E6600 CPU). I also downgraded to Pluggy dev128 (I have mods that depend on at least 128 too). This forced me to start another new game, since Pluggy dev132 gets rid of .pluggy files to accompany saves, & thus I had none from previous saves).

Everything was running smoothly, without crashes, until I went outdoors. Soon after I had a few combats, the crashes started as did corrupt saves (resulting from crashing while saving).

This brings me to my next point. Peter ID asked if there was an identifiable pattern. I do notice that the crashes happen most often when I try to save a game. Following that, they tend to happen frequently after casting a spell that puts a shader on an actor (usually the charm spell). Beyond those two, the other similarity to most of my CTDs is that they happen almost entirely outdoors.

I am still testing, but if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I'm very close to yanking 90% of my mods & playing mostly vanilla at this point.

First off, lol and thanks to Malonn, the experimental stuff has reduced my random crash rate on my huge FCOM game even further. Those settings and the 4gb ram patch are flawless for large data folders.

Afaik, crash on save + corrupt saves = straight up conflicting mods. Wyre does a great job of nipping most of these things. But methinks you will still have to just spend an hour or two enabling and disabling mods, to find the misfit.
Random crashes are hard to track down, my deal with them is as long as they don't repeat in the same spot, and they don't happen often they may exist in my game lol. I'm always surprised by my FCOM install, it's so stable it scares me.

I did not see if you use streamline (for autosaves and purging) so assume no. Crash on save, is it both quicksave and manual save? Do you have autosaves turned off in the game?

For gigles deactivate mods needing pluggy and disable pluggy. Longshot but worth a try to eliminate the easy things first.

Load order would help as it would give ideas if someone had that combination of mods.

I clean mods also and pyyfi meshes but have run into instances where I corrupted meshes or mods but I do not think you are that desparate to start from scratch.

I do use Streamline. I have all safeties engaged for streamsaving (not in a dangerous environment, not during combat, not while swimming, etc.). I also save manually, being careful not to overwrite saves. I don't use quicksave or autosave. The game cheerfully crashes with both manual & streamsaving. When that happens, often a corrupt save results from the .obse & .pluggy files not being written alongside the save.

My load order is already included in my first post, along with my Bain packages order (from the installers tab). The latter is probably easier to browse, since it lists whole mods. My load order is managed strictly by BOSS.

I have PyFFIed meshes from most of my installed mods, as well as Oblivion - Meshes.bsa, so there is that possibility. The thing is, I was already experiencing crashes before I started PyFIIing or cleaning with TES4Edit. That doesn't rule out that there still could be a problem there, only that there was a problem preceding it.

I've come down to believing that there is a mod (or mods) in my load order that are causing critical errors. Most likely, it's one of my favorite mods, since I've altered & trimmed my load list many times, with the crashing persisting. It's either that, or perhaps Oblivion isn't getting along with my hardware somehow. I have updated all of my drivers, so I'm not sure what that would be though.

I guess I should just cut everything out but the most dire essentials, like the UOP, supplementals, etc., & go from there. I really hate to start over again, after spending so much time on this already.

In the hopes of saving time, does anyone find fault with the following mods, in terms of detracting from game stability, or incompatibility between them? These are ones that I'd very much like to keep:
  • Streamline
  • Realistic Leveling
  • Enhanced Economy
  • Race Balancing Project
  • Supreme Magicka
  • LAME
  • Midas Magic
  • Better Redguards
  • DB's Static Quest Rewards
  • MMM
  • Vaults of Cyrodiil
  • Save Skill Books for Later
  • Cobl
  • Display Stats
  • Keychain
  • Shining Creatures
  • Map Marker Overhaul
  • Grass & Trees Speed Mod
  • Phitt's Phighting Phixes
  • MOBS (standalone)
  • Actor Details
  • FormID Finder
  • RefScope
  • DZ Auto Harvest
  • Reneer's Guard Overhaul
  • Enhanced Weather

I used to have problems with my game doing outdoor CTDs. The single thing I did that made the biggest difference was to monitor my VRam usage and customise some of the landscape replacers until I was below the threshold of my available Vram.

Might be worth using...

SetDebugText 13
TDT

...to see what your Vram usage looks like.

Might be worth a try - I seem to remember from the OP that there was not a lot of Vram

1. Test your RAM,VRAM,HD
2. Test Oblivion memory usage - open Task Manager with option "always on top", play Oblivion at window mode.

I recall a thread/post by Arkngt who was having a corrunpted save issue and suspected streamline. I think there was a resolution but do not recall what or what thread.

As for VRAM, I do not see it as your issues, but could be wrong. I have played without problem with my VRAM over 1.2GB (on a 1GB VRAM card) without CTD.

Saves I would think are related to things that write save data like streamline, pluggy, obse.

?Streamline
?Realistic Leveling
?Enhanced Economy
?Race Balancing Project
?Supreme Magicka
?LAME
?Midas Magic
?Better Redguards
?DB's Static Quest Rewards
?MMM
?Vaults of Cyrodiil
?Save Skill Books for Later
?Cobl
?Display Stats
?Keychain
?Shining Creatures
?Map Marker Overhaul
?Grass & Trees Speed Mod - seems like it would affect everything outdoors - worth deactivating
?Phitt's Phighting Phixes
?MOBS (standalone)
?Actor Details
?FormID Finder
?RefScope
?DZ Auto Harvest - never used. What does it do? Anything like Harvest Flora or Herbalism (I used both wothout issues)
?Reneer's Guard Overhaul
?Enhanced Weather

Consider the time you are spending to fix this compared to rebuilding the game with the same mods but adding them gradually until it crashes again. get the skip turorial mod, stat a new game with just the main overhaul mods that need to be active. Go to the areas you get crashes. If all OK add a couple more mods, test, and in a few hours you should find your problem. If no problem then load your save (should be good as you have the same mods) and try then.

1F moDem's City Life.esp

Remove Modem City Life for Sure or else make sure that is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11351 has the first few version where buggy has hell and lead to crashes ..

Think about Getting Crowded Roads Revamped Instead..

Get rid of CUO for sure has that is pretty much wiping out any Arma and MMM Additions to the game..

Sorry to resurrect a thread that is a couple of weeks old by now, but I just wanted to follow up by saying thank you to everyone who offered help & advice. I followed most of your advice & was finally able to get the crashes to stop (well, as much as anyone, at least).

In the hope that this may prove helpful to others who might be having similar issues, I'll recap what helped resolve the problem. I uninstalled Pluggy, since many claimed that to be a source of CTDs. I also uninstalled MoDem's City Life & the CUO plugins, for the same reason. This mitigated things somewhat, but the crashes ultimately did not stop until I uninstalled Streamline.

I am sure I had Streamline configured properly, having followed the documentation thoroughly. I had already trimmed back to only using the Streampurge & Streamsave elements of the mod, & finally just Streampurge, but apparently that wasn't enough. For whatever reason, my setup did not play well with the purging.

To be honest, I had my own suspicions about Streamline for some time, since it was one of my favorite "must have" mods that I always included in any setup (which, consequently, had crashing problems). So I'm forced to agree with Arkngt on this one.

Now that I've resolved my frequent crashes, I'm off to attempt a workable FCOM setup from scratch.

Hm, I've been using Streamline like forever w/o (serious) issues so not sure what you mean there. Anyway, glad that you rid of the CTD issues. And if only using the Streampurge feature you might as well use a mod that only performs PCB's.

I recall a thread/post by Arkngt who was having a corrunpted save issue and suspected streamline. I think there was a resolution but do not recall what or what thread.=

That's where I got the impression you had similar issues with Streamline. No matter. I'll look into some other PCB mods, though I'm not sure why Streamline would cause me crashes & be stable for most others. I disabled all of my mods & added them back in one by one. It only started crashing again when I added Streamline back in. I'm not sure what else to make of that, except that Streamline was the problem (or another mod that has a problem with it). I didn't have many installed prior to re-enabling Streamline though.

In case it helps, I use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9139 (Loading) and have had no trouble with it.

Right. It was this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1155913-issue-with-corrupt-streamsaves/. That's just about the only problem I've had with Streamline - and it turned out to be some issue with saves in general. Not sure, but I think it was caused by "dirty" mods somehow.
Otherwise, my only issue has been with fog being messed up once in a while (Streamsight). I've switched to All Natural's fog now btw.

Anyway, have you tried making a clean save and "restarting" Streamline?

I've had at Least 4 400+hr. games, that started crashing any time I tried to save, they were, for the most part Fairly stable otherwise (I think the most recent I could go 1-3 hr. without a crash)
Never Did figure out the cause, I naturely had to Deactivat StreamSave first of all, witch for me Was Streamline, but it hasn't made a differance, Ive so far had to abbandon those games.

I started crashing after clocking up many game hours. Turned out that all I needed to do was right-click the save game in Wrye Bash and select Repair Abomb - once I did this, the crashing stopped.
