Black texture problem

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 10:32 am

I just installed Banasplit's Better Cities after installing RAEVWD.

When I installed RAEVWD I wasn't having this issue, but after installing BBC, this started to happen:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=typg-Yc9cOQ

Everything is black when looking straight at it after a certain distance, but looks fine if I look down after a certain angle.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Things I have tried:

removing all Banasplit files. The esms, esps, and .bsas.

Re-running tes4lodgen

reinstalling RAEVWD files over the old texture files

making sure archive invalidation was invalided

rebuilding bashed patch

Here is the list of mods I'm currently running:

Spoiler

When I got black textures, on some buildings and once the entire sky, I'm pretty sure it was due to Oblivion trying to load 1100mb of textures on my 1gb video card. When I'd reload a save they'd go away. Your problem seems to be different, since the texture does show up at certain angles, so I guess black textures don't always necessarily mean the same thing. Though I could be wrong about my texture memory assumption, I guess. From what I've read I think the cause(s) of black textures remain a mystery, though I hope someone can be more helpful.

RAEVWD is not compatible with Better Cities, as it states in the ReadMe and the RAEVWD thread. You can use it, but don't activate the city esps.
Did you run TES4LODGen after installing RAEVWD?

Yes I ran lodgen after installing raevwd and it worked fine. I ran it again after installing better cities and that's when the problems started.

I uninstalled better cities and ran it again but the problem is persisting.

Oh I see, so you want RAEVWD? I don't see the esps active in your load order so wasn't sure. That's probably the problem.

If you're not using BC then activate the RAEVWD cities.esp and Imperial City.esp. Also the New Sheoth.esp if you want it in Shivering Isles too. Run BOSS, rebuild your Bashed patch then run LODGen again. Should set it all right.

Are you using Bloom lighting? If so , consider switching to HDR; the black VWD problem is rather notorious for happening very often with Bloom lighting.

I would recommend you clear the Distantlod folder if you remove mods and run lodgen again.

Figured it would be something stupidly simple. Thanks so much.

As for not having the esps... whoops >>

Thanks for the help guys!

Yeah I did read the readme correctly regarding the esps:

"01 City Plugins - The ESPs used to provide VWD for buildings in the Imperial City and the outlying cities. Both of these are entirely optional."

I will delete distandlod and refill it though.

Did this work?? The changing bloom to HDR? Because I have this problem too.

For the record, running REAVWD and Better cities is ok when you don't use the .esps, because (as far as I am aware) TES4LODGEN just generates everything based on the physical distantLOD files in the folders, whilst the REAVWD.esps add these meshes to the cities because Bethesda didn't put houses everywhere.

Arthmoor would know best, but it is safe to run REAVWD and Better Cities, providing you just install the meshes. Better Cities have their own meshes, so you'll see them too.

Correct, only the RAEVWD ESPs should not be used with BC, all the meshes are fine to use.

using RAEVWD (without city esp's) and BBC together do not work / look well when Blood and Mud is used....this includes Bravil and some castle meshes....

cheers

So much time could have been saved by checking the readme :P And the included FAQ as well.

Same for the subject of the ESPs and BC.

Seriously people. Read them. We write this stuff for a reason!

As I stated above I read the readmes.

My issue was with Bloom lighting. When I switched to HDR the issue went away.

Right, you're issue was with Bloom lighting. We understand that. Below, an exert from the RAEVWD ReadMe file...

Known Issues
------------

When used with bloom lighting, the VWD objects may always show up as black. Provided you are *SURE* the lowres directory is in the right place in your textures directory, the only fix for this is to switch to a different lighting method. I'm not sure if normal lighting works, but switching to HDR will resolve this issue. There is no known way to fix this otherwise.

So as Arthmoor stated, reading the documentation would have saved you quite a bit of time and you would have avoided unnecessary troubleshooting.
