The Morrowind Story was pretty cliche too (you are the chosen one to stop evil) but it was just put in a deep and original setting.
Sorry, I have to contend with you on this one, since that isn't what the story is about.
You are most decidedly NOT the chosen one, at least not in any practical terms. You are an Imperial agent who is tasked with convincing people he or she is the 'chosen one' in order to assassinate a demi-god. Whether that in and of itself makes you 'the chosen one' becomes irrelevant and is just a technicality of your mission. The fact that you have a dream where Azura comes and speaks to you also doesn't necessarily mean you are the chosen one, since there have been many 'chosen ones' before you and they have all failed.
It in fact calls into question all notion of the cliche of the Campbellian hero's journey and kind of spits in its face.
This is why Morrowind's storyline is my favorite, because it acknowledges those cliches and then outright defies them.
Gonna have to say Fallout 3, I found it more interesting to play as someone I knew the history of.
I will say I loved the aspect of being born to real parents and actually having a family and a history. It may not have afforded the RP freedom that TES does (except that you inevitably did SOMETHING to land in prison, or at least, where falsely accused of something) but I would love to see a similar character introduction transposed to a fantasy setting.
