Problems with items being visible.

Post » Thu Mar 10, 2011 10:56 pm

I'm new to playing Oblivion on the PC and was super stoked about modding. I'm having trouble though since I've only gotten one to work perfectly haha. I'm taking things out of WinRar and puting them in a folder marked Oblivion Mods. Then I'm just right clicking to copy to folder and then I click the Oblivion Data. I know it's not working though since the armour isn't appearing. I'm able to go to the stores where it's sold and talk to the shopkeeper (thought the whole place is telling me I'm missing meshes. Then when I try to wear it it's invisible. How do I correctly place the meshes in the data folder? thanks in advance.

The big yellow triangle with an exclamation mark means a missing mesh. Invisible items/clothing/etc. means a missing normal map. I recommend you get either OBMM or Wrye Bash (Bash is highly recommended) to install mods properly.

Your folder structure should be Oblivion\Data\Meshes, Textures, Menus, Sound etc. Place any mod with a textures and meshes folder in the Data directory.

Read the help file for creating omod files. This is the way to go for OBMM. But then, the future I think is Wrye Bash and BAIN so take a week and learn that :)

You will need Wrye Bash sooner or later so get in on the ground floor.

All it says is to browse until you find the mod. I found the mod but there are no selectable files..... How do I put the winrar stuff in an archive? The help file svcks.

Easy, but first you need to make sure the rar file contains a file structure that OBMM can work with, IIRC. Allways look for omods or omod ready archives. Anyway:

If the rar has a structure where the texture, meshes, sound, etc, folders are in the root (as well as any esp, esm, bsa files then it is good to go.

When creating the omod file, choose 'from archive' then browse to the rar file and select it.

Then just click create omod. That is it.

If you have a rara file that is not like that then extract to a directory. The to create omod, choose add folder, browse to the folder that has the textures, meshes, etc. files and choose it. Then click create omod.

Try it out.

Therein lies the problem. Where is it? Do I send it somewhere specific from WinRar?

This is so true. I stuck with OBMM as long as I could, then made the change reluctantly. Took me weeks to get the hang of it, and there are still things I don't fully understand. But it's worth it. OBMM is still needed for certain mods and functions, but the sooner you master Wrye Bash the better. You'll start out cursing those of us who recommend it, but end up kicking yourself for not converting sooner. BTW, between the two (OBMM and Wrye Bash), I can't think of a single mod that must be manually installed. Even those that come as EXE files can normally be converted to either format. I think the only mod I install manually is the utility OSR (Oblivion Stutter Remover). Even it was initially an OMOD. But it's only one tiny DLL file that overlaps nothing, and is these days updated quite often. It's just not worth the hassle of turning into an OMOD. It is THE exception for me.

How did you download it? Did you say "open with WinRAR" when asked, so it will be somewhere in whatever temporary folder structure your OS has, hard to guess for anyone else than you, or did you actually "download" and store it somewhere on your drive? Then you would know "where" it is. Or it ended up in the default download location of the browser/download app you used perhaps.

Okay, you seem pretty new to all this, so I recommend you read http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/449239-oblivion-mods-faq/.
