Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:45 am

Im wondering if you guys know where Fallout draws alot of its inspiration from? I'm making a Fallout-style Role playing game and Im just wondering what movies, books, and other stuff I could use for some inspiration and Ideas.
Thanks!

Allright, we're looking for post-apoclyptia, right?

Movies:
Mad Max series
Water World (careful- this one may make your eyes bleed it's so bad)
"Escape from (blank)" series
Terminator Series (the "flashbacks" to the war vs. Skynet, and the most recent movie)
28 Days

As for books... umm...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-apocalyse

But be careful; there was an attempt to make a Fallout Pen & Paper RPG that Bethesda immedately squished.

As bad as it sounds I actually liked to the movie Waterworld. You could try watching movies and t.v shows from the 50's era for inspiration, old sci fi flicks and such.

Lots of movies, but THE major piece of inspiration was definitely the Mad Max trilogy.

- The leather armor of Fallout 1 and 2 is the one Max wears in Mad Max 2 : The Road Warrior
- Dog Meat is clearly inspired by Max's companion in Mad Max 2 : The Road Warrior
- The Chrysalis Highwayman car from Fallout 2 was inspired by Max's "Interceptor"
- The clothing and punk hairstyle of the raiders was copied from the Highway gangs in Mad Max
- The Intro's of all Fallout games were inspired by the really cool intro to The Road Warrior http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frENmS2EJKg&feature=related
- Junktown from Fallout 1 (aswell as other towns in the series) was propably inspired by Bartertown from Mad Max 3 : Beyond Thunderdome
- The Tribals of Fallout 2 and Little Lamplight from Fallout 3 were both inspired by the children tribe from Mad Max 3

Not to mention that propably the entire atmosphere of Fallout was inspired by those of Mad Max :)

There are lots of other sci-fi and post apocalyptic movie references in Fallout but Mad Max was clearly the main guideline throughout the series. And thats cool as the movies are great. :flamethrower:

Yeah, I didn't think it was half-bad, for what it was either. I think the main problem is that Kevin Costner seems to have a need to make every movie he's involved in so ridiculously "EPIC!" It was at least an interesting concept, I thought.

What the hell is Water World? I'm not a big fan of Kevin Coster, so its a movie I probably haven't seen. But everyone on here always mentions Water World?

Anyway, the Mad Max trilogy and any other post-nuclear war movie/book are inspiration. And the Traders clothes, the one's with all the forks, spoons and what-not, were inspired by The Last Battle, a French movie about a guy traveling with ruins of Paris after a nuclear war. The character in it wears something very similar to it. And the movie is good :)

It's worse than a B, it's a C movie. In every sense.

Anyway, apart from the post apocalyptic stuff like Mad Max, a great deal of Fallout inspiration is from fifties sci-fi movies. Although technology kept developing up to the great war, society and culture in the Falloutverse remained stuck in that period.

Water World- Apparently post-apoctalypic Earth where everying but the peak of Mt. Everest is covered in water. Plots include the main character's partial evolution into a water-based creature, and the search for land.

Unfortuantly, that's part of the problem with Water World- there's not enough ice locked into the atmosphere, clouds, icecaps, etc. to do this. And that's not the only issue with Water World. Good concept, but it ignores some things...

Ah, now I know what your talking about. I've never actually watched it, but I have seen parts of it a while back. It seemed ok, but I never knew what it was called. It does sound kind of cool, but like I said, I'm not a big Kevin Costner fan so I may or may not look into it?

'The Road' (a book and soon to be released film) provided Bethesda with some inspiration for Fallout 3, according to http://bethblog.com/index.php/2009/05/15/the-road-arrives-this-october/#comments

It looks like Austrailia because it was hit by a load of nuclear bombs, that doesn't say anything nice about Austrailia does it?

Watched it on Netflix the other day. Very awesome and highly recommended. Johnson even refers to the dog as "dogmeat" in one scene.

Yeah, if I had to point to just one movie where Fallout wouldn't have been the same without - I'd have to say Boy and his Dog. :) There's that humour and satire that's sort of integral to the Fallout franchise that seems to fit so well with that movie. I think, at least.

Anyone who really wants to get into post-apocalyptic movies after playing Fallout - that's the one to watch.
