Are you going to do everything with one character?

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 5:29 pm

Yes. Absolutely. I'll probably have several characters, and each will be as close to a demi-god as possible. (That's fun for me)

However, I will not vote 'yes' because in your poll, that sole answer, it uses "toon" and I disagree with that. Curiously, you use "character" in the other options.

Why is that?

This is funny, because in Skyrim it will be impossible to do everything with one character.

They did it in Oblivion  I don't understand the mentality of people doing the Guild of fighters, then Mages, then DB, Then thieves and not see something hilariously off about what they are doing, its borderline Bipolar disorder. of course theres FREEDOM which I whoelle heartedly enjoy, but I'd like some difficulty in dipping my hands in everything, especially when it wouldnt make sense game wise

I totally agree. People can play however they want, but doing quests for multiple factions feels wrong to me. There's just no way for it to make sense if you're trying to play a particular character and create a story that works, but that's not the goal of everyone who plays. I'll probably install mods that limit choices when they become available.

I don't think it should even be possible to do everything with one character.

I like to get 10-12 hours in then go back and do stuff another way or use another setup.

Actually, I have three characters in mind, they will all do some of the game, but none will do all of it.

A shamaness - My idealist rebel sympathizer - Seeks to learn the dragontounge
A bardess - Because of the Bard College, she probably will probably be played as the loyalist. Music and dance are her joy.
A Friar Tuck type - He will be the one with the beard, and he just wants to cook, lol.

They all like dancin' close to the fire.

Edit: typo

I'll probably take my time with the first character trying to make a big fuss out of everything.

I hope I am strong enough to actually be able to begin a different character (And not get bored by the main quest I just did with the first one....).

Who are some of you on your high horses to tell other people how to play a single player game? Get over it, if you don't like people playing a single character don't do it yourself and don't concern yourself with others' decisions! It doesn't make sense to you? Well, then you have every right to not do it yourself. Don't obsess over how other people choose to play their own characters.

I prefer to play a single character. I may or may not do the same thing as Skyrim. I know one thing for sure though, I don't give the tiniest bit of care that some random message board poster may or may not have a problem with how I choose to play a single player game.

Don't try to tell me what the good RPG experience is. It's whatever you personally prefer. Don't like to do most everything with one character? Don't do it, it's as simple as that.

I will make hundreds of characters, mostly based on fictional characters I've seen.
I will make a few that I stick with into ultimately high levels, but most will reach level 15-25 and then I'll make a new one. Mostly because I get bored of a character.

I will make
Legolas
A sith/jedi
Voldemort
Chuck Norris
and many other characters who already exist depending on my interest at the time.

from my understanding of how this game deals out quests (i remember reading something about how they are crafted toward your character-type), i imagine you would not be able to do every, single thing with one character. which is fine for me. it always bothered me that you could join, and led, all the factions at once. i can understand being the DB and another more official faction, since the DB is so secretive i imagine one could keep that fact hidden.

on a sidenote, if "multi-factioning" is still a part of the game, I think their should be a cut-off point in the ranks you can in each group when in more than one.

One character for every archetype.

1. Warrior
2. Thief/Assassin (I might separate these in Skyrim)
3. Mage

Im not sure I understand the question fully. Are you asking if we should be able to do all the factions on one playthrough? Or are you asking if we are going to do all the possible quests we can on our first character?

My first character I will pretty much complete the main quest while doing side quests here and there. Once I finish, I'll likely play a little bit more and then restart with a new character; my TRUE character. I have to learn all (or most) of the worlds secrets first though. This second character I will grind through and complete everything.

As far as being able to join certain factions or whatever the OP was asking, I wouldnt mind if there were a couple of factions that you joined at the BEGINNING of the game, similar to MW. I felt like FO NV failed pretty hard at this aspect though. There were simply too many factions, too many choices, and it all just ended up becoming meaningless to me. I would have much rather had a more straight forward MQ and had all that extra energy wasted on separate factions and quests focused towards side quests.

I like being able to choose from 2-3 factions right from the get go, knowing that I can then never join the other one (2). Morrowind actually nailed it if with the houses if you ask me. If there going to be separate factions thats how it should be.

OP here;

I meant that you will do everything possible with one character, be that all the factions (if its like OB) and all the quests.

My first TES game was oblivion, and I did everything with one character.

Then I played MW, and that game is so much better than oblivion IMO (well, everything but Marksmanship and Sneak), loved everything about it, I made several characters, and those characters will probably what I play in Skyrim.

-Breton SpellTheif
-Nord Fighter
-Dunmer Assassin

And about the "toon" thing, I just quit WoW a month ago (after 4 years of playing it religiously), old habits die hard.

In TES, one can make a single character that can do everything with maximum skill. And there is really no quests that are so enjoyable that I absolutely have to do them twice. And there is no group with social interactions, especially no romances, like in Baldurs Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, or Dragon Age. And no, not even in Morrowind there was much of a limitation about what you could do in one walkthrough - see my answer to the posting below. So what would be the point of ever creating a second character ?

Not that I havent played around with a lot of characters in Morrowind before settling down with my female Breton Atronarch do-it-all I played in Oblivion, too. And started a couple of characters in Oblivion before returning to my default. But after a while I always ended up disregarding every other character, simply because there was no reason to ever play a second character. Races dont have much influence and Breton has by far the most useful racial properties, anyway. And more importantly, they are both in Morrowind and Oblivion the most beautiful of the races, especially the female ones.

Despite that, I probably will do everything I can with one character (hopefully there will limitations like in MW).

Hu ?

Hardly.

You could reign all major guilds with one character if you were careful enough with the sequence of quest you did for Warriors and Thieves.

And if you did it early enough, in respect to the main questline, you could also join and lead the Priests ... thats the point were I actually hit the 2 months limit I have with every singleplayer game except Baldurs Gate 2, after which the game can be as good as it wants, I am simply bored by playing it - so after that I stopped playing and never finished the MW main questline. Oh well.

The Brotherhood, I think you could join them after you maxed all other guilds just fine. I never did that one, either. Kinda sad, I heard those are the best quests in Morrowind (and Oblivion). Oh well.

And you could only join one out of three houses. But they were not that super interesting that it really mattered anyway, plus if I remember correctly, only one offered you those houses you could only enter with levitation, so that choice was a nobrainer, too.

Thats all of the "limitations" I can recall from Morrowind (mind, I didnt played that one again, ever, once I got Oblivion, so my youngest experiences with MW are at least half a decade old).

I'm quite fond of hybrid characters like nightblades, spellswords, rangers etc so my characters may have the option to do everything but they won't. Personality rather than skill will be what limits their choices.

Even though I know I can do every quest with the same character in Oblivion, I don't generally do so, I don't WANT to do so. For one thing, I've made a lot of characters in it, and it would be annoying to do all the same quests with every one, also, when it comes to the major questlines, I try to role-play, I don't join the Mages Guild if my character doesn't use magic, I don't join the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood if I intend for my character to be a law abiding citizen, and such, it's how I like to do things. I also try to make my new character different from the last one, if my first character was primarily a warrior, my second character might use stealth or magic, for example. And yes, eventually, you can maximize all skills, but I don't generally play the same character long enough to do so.

And if Skyrim let's me join and complete all factions with the same character, I won't do that either, I'll only join factions that I think fit my character, as to side quests, Radiant Story should help to take care of that.

Could you please add: "I hope that it won't be possible to do it all, but I'll look for ways to."

That's exactly my thoughts.

I play TES not to "roleplay", there are tabletop games and LARPs with live people for that stuff. There is really no point for some warrior NOT to join Mages Guild. And when it is joined, there is no point not to complete their quests... whoops, Archmage.

In Morrowind it was way better than in Oblivion, because faction promotions were restricted by Skills and Attributes. So if said warrior joined Mages Guild for an access to some good Restoration spell making, enchanting services and probably Levitation spell (or a Thief joined for some nice Destruction + Illusion additions to his skills), but he does not specializes in magical crafts, then he won't advance past, say, Magician. And that's perfectly fine.

But I personally never envisioned my characters in TES games as "some mage" or "some warrior". They were Eternal Champion, Emperor's Agent, Nerevarine and Mad God 2.0. Strongest badasses of their times and places, shaping the world their way and saving it as a byproduct. Of course persons of that immense power and ambition tend to become leaders of various organizations. That's what the game is about.

I hope that it won't be possible to join every faction and complete everything at once, but I also hope that it will be more interesting than "this group of factions is good/imperial, and this is evil/rebellious — choose one for first playthrough, and other for second". Three houses of Vvardenfell were much better concept, although I never joined anything but Telvanni, but that is pure personal preference.

So, in general — I will try to complete as much as it is possible with one god-like character. Then, probably later, I will make another one and will try to complete other stuff first one missed.
