Foreign Languages in Skyrim

Post » Tue Mar 22, 2011 4:18 pm

The GI interview mentioned that there will not be any cut-screen dialog in Skyrim. All conversations will take place in real time as the world continues around you. IMO, although I do like the idea of some isolated groups of kajiits having their own language, I don't think it would be such a good idea trying to piece together what someone said as your traveling through giant territory by having to scrutinize subtitles. Not to mention, If you're talking in real time, it's easy for subtitles to feel cumbersome as they will blend in with some backgrounds.

What if I don't want any subtitles? Ever.

What if I dont want any voice acting? Ever.

Thats an equally ridiculous statement.
Even though I feel written dialogue by definition has more depth and immersion than voice acting ever could,
(for the same reason the book is better than the movie) its still never going to happen.

Yeah, imo after TOR hits the shelves several fully voiced MMOs are gonna pop up in the next few years. Poorly done MMOs, but that'll still prove something.

Oh and in TOR some aliens will speak in their own language ;)

Definitely, tie it in with speechcraft so that skill actually becomes useful, maybe even include some perks that allow you to speak creature languages like in Daggerfall.

Silly Rabbit, everyone knows that English is the sole language in the universe.

Yeah, haven't you ever watched star trek?

on topic, something that was REALLY cool in FFX was this special language called Al-Bhed (or something) that you learned throughout the game. after you beat the game, if you learned it all, I think you could start the game with the knowledge, and understand things you missed before.
