Curious Combat Crash

Like the title says, sometimes Oblivion will dump me back to the desktop in combat. Not all the time, but often enough that it tells me something is amiss. I have crashed under the following conditions:

A summoned Spectral Warrior strikes me with an unblocked melee that is enough to kill me. When it connects I immediately hear the unequip sound effect and see the desktop.
A Nether Lich hits me with a shock bolt that is enough to kill me. When it connects I immediately hear the unequip sound effect and see the desktop.
An Ancient Vampire hits me with a power attack which I block, but it is enough to kill me. When it connects I immediately hear the unequip sound effect and see the desktop.
A rat hits me, and because of Attribute-Based and Skill-Based Damage Modifiers it is enough to kill me. When it connects I immediately hear the unequip sound effect and see the desktop.
A Vampire Archer hits me with an arrow and it is enough to kill me. When it connects I immediately hear the unequip sound effect and see the desktop.
A Vampire hits me with melee or a deadly shock bolt and it is enough to kill me. When it connects I immediately hear the unequip sound effect and see the desktop.

I have been slaying as many Vampires as possible and have 270-ish kills, and during this time the combat crash counts more than twenty.

Load order?

Do you have any mods that are designed to interrupt the death process?

I am guessing the unequip sounds could be from BEAR (BFG's enhanced armor realism) that occur when an armor degrades/breaks. Can you see some console output through Conscribe?

If I'm not mistaken, the sound that plays upon crash is the weapon unequip sound.

01 All Natural Base.esm [Version 1.0] - Consider updating to 1.2.1.

All those dungeon mods by edolsian really need to be cleaned ... Falkenshire, etc. Doubt that is the cause, but can't hurt to clean them.

What happens if you are not in combat and like jump off of a cliff or something?

I'll bet this is it though: skycaptains NPCFF.esp

I think he updated that or found ctds himself - kinda vague memory though.

1. Maybe you should try play (for testing only ) without sound, or value "iMaxImpactSoundCount" to 16.
2. There is some option in WB to delay menu appearance after PC death. Long shot ,but try.

Thank goodness it wasn't Kuertee's Attribute-Based and Skill-Based Damage Modifiers, I really need that mod. I still don't know the reason behind the crash, but I have isolated the condition. If I have Light of Dawn unsheathed, as in ready to fight, then a hit to me can ctd. Not always, but it is likely. To be sure of this I tested between my silver bow and Light of Dawn, letting a nether lich kill me with his lightning. With the silver bow equipped and ready the game did not crash once. With Light of Dawn equipped and ready the nether lich zapped me and it was back to desktop. This is sad news because it means I can't use this powerful sword without risking a ctd, and I gave Umbra back to Clavicus Vile.

This reminds me of this thread from last year: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1086328-crash-when-fighting-dread-zombies/. I seem to recall some other reports on LoD CTDs as well - but can't remember if it ever was pinpointed/resolved. My char is using Light of Dawn almost exclusively w/o any issues so far - might be some other factor involved perhaps?

The only option now is for me to go through my short mod list and begin deactivating mods. It's not so bad because there are less than 30 and I have a quicksave with me fighting a nether lich. I will also have a look at LoD's script. In fact, I will test other enchanted weapons as well after seeing the zombie crash topic.
