PS3 is Alien Technology?

Post » Tue Apr 12, 2011 12:04 am

So Splash Damage developer Paul Wedgwood came out and said that PS3 is Alien Technology. Here's the exact quote:

"The PlayStation 3, for us, was just alien technology. Take the cover off and its probably organic. We decided from the beginning we’d get the PC up and running as quickly as possible for gameplay testing. Within about three months of starting we were playing multiplayer games, just deathmatch with the initial weapon loadout. Then we started playing with the basic first couple of objectives. Then as SMART came in, we started playing with the basic vaulting, mantling, sliding under things and leaning around corners."

I wont be like other ignorant folks and call them lazy because PS3 is known for being hard to developer for. But that is like 3 years ago. After so much time in developer's hands, Bethesda included (i know they're only publishing), do you think devs should at least attempt to use the PS3 to make games? EA switched most of their games development to PS3 or PC and they look and perform well on all platforms. Another note would be Platinum's Bayonneta transtion to Vanquish, big difference. I am very looking forward to Brink, i just hope this doesn't mean PS3 will have another terrible port.

Good Gosh the man hit the nail on the head. Bayonetta was built on 360 and ported to PS3 and while it is one of the best games of all time, It was choppy to say the least. Then Vanquish, Built on PS3 and ported to PC and 360, looked amazing across the board. Cheers!

From the perspective of a collection of PC developers of course it's "alien" to them.

The better more relevant question is why is PSN still down. I cant get my mk fix. The ps3 tech cant be that alien if it can get knocked out of commission by average dudes. Thats why you do not [censored] with people who use Linux on their console.

Um...may i ask what does PSN being down have to do with PS3's hardware? Also it didnt get knocked down, it was breached. Sony themselves shutdown PSN..

Sony themself put down the servers because they didn't want us too loose all our stuff.... and yes the PS3's tech is pretty [censored] advanced from what i've heard.

It can't be that hard, it just that MS made a smart move by making the X360 easy to program for, just like the PS2, which is, to me, still a legendary piece of hardware when it comes to 3rd party games.

Gabe Newell came out and said the same, that's why they didn't develop any titles for PS3 in house. Sony has a [censored] SDK for making PS3 games from what I'm gathering.

The PS3 is notorious for being a pain to develop for not because it doesn't have the horsepower, but because it's unique. Sony has taken that approach with the PS2 and PS3 while MS with the Xbox 1 and 360 (especially the original Xbox) has taken the approach of using known hardware components that more mimic the PC approach.

Also, you can't say that "developers have had plenty of time with the PS3" as this is Splash Damage's first console game. They have some employees who have done console work but not as a company.
