3DS Max 2011 Tutorials

Post » Tue Apr 12, 2011 9:13 am

So I recently-ish bought a copy of 3DS Max 2011. My quick question is, which would be the best place to get tutorials for it? (I know there are tuturials built in but I was wondering if they were the best tutorials) I can do a bit of rudimentary modelling from when I had Blender, but I'm afraid I can't do anything complicated. I'm hoping to get into the game designing business so I thought 3DS Max would be the way to go. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks for replies,
Soulwithlife.

Edit: It's the 32 bit version by the way.

A lot of the tutorials will still be helpful for you, particularly it's for version 7 or 8 and up, so those types of tutorials will still be helpful. A lot of things are still similar, except for newer features. Your best bet there would be Autodesk's http://area.autodesk.com/ homepage, which is part of their Community section. It had tutorials and tips available there. You do have to make an account for that section, however, to view the tutorials and whatnot.

The one thing you're NOT going to want to do is use any tutorials from 3DS Max 7 when it comes to UV Mapping...I made this mistake before. They tried a new system for UV Mapping on 7, which they ended up scrapping for future versions, so those tutorials won't be helpful. But that's only for the UV Mapping parts, I think.

A tutorial outside of Autodesk that I found helpful for me was http://www.game-artist.net/forums/spotlight-articles/43-tutorial-introduction-normal-mapping.html. It really helped me in making detailer normal maps using 2011's normal map baking feature. Another good site is http://www.3dcafe.com/, which is being renovated right now. I used it a lot doing school in my 3D Animation class and their tutorials were always easy to follow, so keep checking for it to open back up.

And, as you said before, it comes packaged with tutorials. Now, I didn't find them to be the BEST for learning, since they work with very specific models, but they were good for referencing when I got stuck, so I could see how they got such-and-such to work. It really helped me figure out my UV Mapping and the UnwrapUV modifiers so I could get things mapped properly. But sometimes I feel that it's too specific, with everything you need pre-made. It's good for basic learning, but it doesn't always help with learning to do your own thing. So I'd take a look-over for some understanding and reference.

Hope that was helpful for you. Just remember that a lot of the old functions are still the same or very similar, so older tutorials might still be useful for you.

Thanks for the information Rinzel! I'll check out the in built tutorials for now, and check out the ones on 3D Cafe when it's finished renovating.
