[WIPz] WEPON 2: Community feedback wanted

Post » Mon Apr 25, 2011 2:30 am

Time for community feedback! I'm trying to add more goodies to WEPON while still focusing on the mod's basic premise (complete weapon and armor sets that are lore-friendly, feel like they belong in the game, and emphasize quality over quantity). To that end, I'd like input on the following.

***STALHRIM WEAPONS AND ARMOR***
I am hoping to use Sage Rime's Stalhrim weapons and light armor, in http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15943. I've received permission for the armor, and we're currently discussing the weapons.

There are at least two ways they could be used:
[1]Make Stalhrim common loot between Dwarven and Elven in quality. This provides the best game balance, but in Morrowind Stalhrim is higher quality than this.
[2]Make Stalhrim rare, and of higher quality than Daedric (weapons) or Glass (light armor). Possibly require the player to collect Stalhrim Ore like in Morrowind. I'm not sure about this approach because it's similar to how a player has to gather Amber/Madness Ore, and because of the idea for the Chaos armament below.

***ADAMANT WEAPONS AND ARMOR***
While not perfect candidates for Adamantium weapons and heavy armor, Andragorn's Sotonhorian set, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26490, has caught my eye. Very few high-quality sets of matching heavy armor and weapons exist, and of those that do, even fewer have not yet seen use in major mods like OOO. After spending a long time scouring TESNexus I believe this is the best existing candidate. And, Andragorn has already given permission :)
I have the same options with this set as with Stalhrim. However, if Adamant is used as "common" loot it would be placed between Glass and Ebony in quality, as that's where it was in most past TES games.

***CHAOS WEAPONS AND ARMOR***
Spoiler
Anyone who has looked at WEPON 1 in the construction set has seen these. I'm wanting to construct a small quest that requires the new Sheogorath to find the long-lost Shrine of Jyggalag and, after they finish the associated quest, they gain access to the Chaos armament - weapons and armor with characteristics of Amber, Madness, and Daedric. Both light armor and heavy armor versions would be available. Obviously, this would require many new models and textures! Depending on what is done with Stalhrim and Adamant, these may not be needed.

***WORK NEEDED (missing pieces)***
Anyone willing to assist with the following items would have my gratitude, not to mention credit in the next version of WEPON! I'd prefer not to include a given set until that set is completed.
  • The Stalhrim set is missing the Bow and Arrows. Due to permission issues the Mace may also need to be recreated.
  • The Sotonhorian (Adamant) set is missing a warhammer, dagger, and bow and arrows.
  • None of the Chaos weapons and armor exist at this time.

Those look like nice weapons to add, I'll do some thinking and cast my votes in a bit. And I'll be glad to help with anything, espcially the Chaos weapons, should my current mission with Mithril/Orcish weapons go well.

But seriously, more of these quality weapons need to be truly incorporated into the game. I can't count the number of times I've found some really nice equipment only to read "added to x shop" or "placed in a chest in x." I don't want to just have the item handed to me, I want to earn it (the whole motivation for my integrated items list, heh)!

Stalhrim should be rare, but equal to or just below the quality of Daedric IMO. As for where you find the Stalhrim ore, it would actually be nice if implemented like the Shivering Isles/Bloodmoon methods. If the ore is randomly found in locations that make sense (i.e. in cold regions), that would be a greater bonus.

Adamantium should be left as a common armor/weapon set (maybe slightly rarer than normal items?), but as I said before, the Sotonhorian set is of too great a quality to place a Adamantium. It would stand out far too much from the other armors IMO. Adamantium looks a lot like steel, so why not look for a stylized steel armor/weapon set mod and call that Adamantium?

If you plan on adding chaos sets, please make them optional (please???). I like this mod because it adds armors/weapons that weren't in-game, but could still be passed as lore-friendly. That set has (to my limited knowledge) no place in TES lore.

Thanks for the feedback so far! Please keep it coming; your feedback is integral to future development of this mod.

I agree completely! To me, it just comes down to whether they're integrated into leveled lists (i.e. everyone can have them), or whether they're obtainable through a system similar to Amber and Madness weapons (i.e. gather the rare materials, kind of like Mistahtokyo talks about).

... but as I said before, the Sotonhorian set is of too great a quality to place a Adamantium. It would stand out far too much from the other armors IMO. Adamantium looks a lot like steel, so why not look for a stylized steel armor/weapon set mod and call that Adamantium?

Personally, I agree with you. Sotonhorian looks too fine and detailed to make for an ideal Adamantium set. Adamantium needs to look extremely heavy and bulky in my opinion. Unfortunately, I've spent a HUGE amount of time researching, and I have been unable to find any other fairly complete weapon+armor sets that aren't already used in another major mod (OOO, Vvardenfell Imports, Armamentium, etc.) that would work well. Of the twelve or so candidate sets I considered, this one was the most unique (i.e. new meshes as well as textures) and the least-used.
If anyone can point me to a specific armor+weapon combo that you think would work for Adamantium, please do so!

Yep, they would be optional. If they're added (probably as part of WEPON 3 :)), they would be obtainable only if you plan to do Jyggalag's quest. As far as lore goes, the idea I have for them would, I think, make them lore friendly, if not canonical. That is, I think they would fit well into TES' existing universe, even if they haven't appeared before now.

I would like to see a female version of the Stahlrim Cuirass,a gradual narrowing from the briastplate to the waistline and a gradual widening of the armor from the waistline to the hem, if this is possible within the scope of Ghogiels readme.

Why do you not want to use the set if it's already used in another mod? Many resources are meant to be shared, and if one group did it right, there's no need to kill yourself with all the effort in trying to find a new set simply because it hasn't been sen. I've personally never used another weapon/armor pack besides this one since I find this one makes changes/additions that make the most sense, but if I had seen the armor elsewhere it wouldn't have made the experience worse; I would still like the armor.

Oh... I though you meant that the Chaos armor would be added to vanilla leveled lists or something like that, but if you're adding it to the Shivering Isles, it would make so much sense! :) So, yeah I'll change my vote regarding chaos armor since I misunderstood the part on where you were going to add it. :P

Hmm, perhaps I should rethink my position on this. I was hoping to avoid a set that already sees common use in large mods, so that WEPON could be installed alongside those large mods without too much issue. But doing so has caused the current problem - an inability to find an ideal Adamantium weapon+armor set!

I'll take another look this weekend, including at the larger mods, to see what might work, and come back with another proposal. In the meantime, if anyone knows of any matching weapon/armor sets that might work for Adamantium, no matter the source, let me know!

Idk, but I mod A added one style of armor and called it Adamantium, but mod B added a different style of armor and called it Adamantium, it would be rather strange. You could argue that in life, armors of identical materials did in fact look different, but still, Adamantium would be the only armor with two styles per material and would stand out. With big replacers, there's a time where you simply have to sit down and think to yourself about what it is you really want. And if you want both, it is easier to patch to mods (I think), than to look for another armor/weapon set, or even have to make one.
