Issues with mods for Windows 7 64-bit?

Post » Mon Apr 25, 2011 7:13 am

I bought a new laptop today and upon setup I selected the 64-bit option for Windows 7. The laptop has a GeForce GT 330M graphics card and to my surprise; plays (Vanilla) Oblivion very well. The only issue I've come across is that there are a few mods that simply do not function in-game.

Some mods work, whilst others don't.

I apologise if there is another thread regarding this already (I imagine there would be a few) but is there a reason why the 64-bit system causes this issue? Also, is there a list available of what mods do work on 64-bit Windows?

Thanks in advanced - Any help would be appreciated.

Mods work fine with 64-bit Win 7; however, you should install Oblivion to an alternate directory. C:\Games\Besthesda\Oblivion... for example.

Hope this helps.

I have it installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion. No issues whatsoever.

Do you have UAC enabled? Installing to Program Files and leaving UAC enabled (which is easy to do, since it's on and extremely obnoxious by default) is a sure-fire recipe for trouble when it comes to running with mods. Disabling UAC might eliminate the issues.

@ the OP: if you'd rather not disable UAC, or if disabling it doesn't fix your problem, try reinstalling to somewhere outside the Program Files directory.

I do have UAC turmed off. Should have mentioned that.

Have you made sure to install the latest official patch? Failing to do that will cause a lot of mods to simply not show up in the game even though you've installed them correctly.

I have it installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion. No issues whatsoever.

This is where I have mine installed too.

Thanks for bringing up the patch because I forgot to mention that I can't install any patches as I keep getting an error. I have The Knights of the Nine expansion pack (The one with all the official DLC on CD) but I can't install the 1.1 patch on there, which says I have to install it prior to installing the DLC. The error says: Old file not found. However, a file with the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match.

After I kept getting this error, I still went ahead and installed Shivering Isles as well. I guess this is where my issue is occurring because some mods may be dependent on patched content. Is there another patch I can download to get around this? Is there something I can do to make the patch install correctly and, excuse my ignorance, but what's UAC?

Thanks heaps for the replies so far. As I said, I'd really appreciate any help in getting this resolved.

Ah...

For most mods to work (be recognized by the game), your Oblivion version needs to one of the newer versions...preferably 1.2.0416. You can download the official patches http://www.gamesas.com/eng/downloads_01.html#oblivpatch

P.S. And my advice is don't worry about UAC...just install Oblivion outside of the Program Files directory and you won't have to worry about it.

Check your opening menu, in the lower left corner. The version number it reports there, what is it?

Chances are if you're installing a GOTY edition of the game it's already been fully patched, but it doesn't sound like you are because the retail GOTY doesn't include any of the other DLCs. Only KOTN and SI.

It sounds like you should be able to just install KOTN and the other DLCs since everything else is in place. Just ignore the 1.1 patch.

Thanks guys. I'll have to reinstall the game, as I uninstalled it last night in frustration. I was getting the same error for the 1.2.0416 patches but I'll download them and try again. Once the game has reinstalled, I'll let you know the version number too; if it helps.

Yeah, I'm not using the GOTY edition. It's just the regular retail version; the very first one that was on sale. I have the retail versions of KOTN and SI too.

Well, when I redid my install after getting Win 7 64, I followed the steps on this http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/How_to_install_Oblivion_with_patches. Worked like a charm. I also have the original Oblivion with the KotN retail pack and the SI retail pack.

So, just reinstalled the game in this order:
1. Install Oblivion 1.0
2. Install Official 1.1.511 Patch (only if you want the launcher to be fully functional)
3. Install Shivering Isles (which brings Oblivion to 1.2.201)
4. Install Official 1.2.416 Patch
5. Install all Official Add-ons

The game is on version 1.2.416 (I think) and some mods still aren't working in-game. I even installed the game into a different directory, i.e. C:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion. Any guesses?

Natural Environments and Ren's Beauty Pack are the ones that I can find that don't work so far. The rest seem to be working - I haven't been able to investigate it too much with all this installing and uninstalling.

I can live without the Beauty Pack mod, which is the hair pack only BTW but I'd really like to get Natural Environments working. It's a personal favourite.

Have you tried http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20516? Perhaps it is a load order issue.

Also, make sure you installed the SI version of the official patch. It suffices to install Oblivion, SI, then the latest patch for SI.

No I haven't. Reticent to start using other programs when this small list of mods has always worked perfectly before in the past and on different PCs. IDK, I'm going to have to keep looking into it. I'll have to give BOSS ago...

Thanks heaps everyone for your replies - It's greatly appreciated .

Scratch that last post. BOSS seems to have fixed the issue of the mods - Thank you so much! So, it had nothing to do with the 64-bit system; I just had to install the game and patches in the correct order, then run BOSS to correct the load order of the mods.

Seriously, thanks again everyone. Such a great community here to be so eager to help someone in troubleshooting!
