This game is going to be the biggest hit in 5 years!

Wow, there's a lot of hype in this thread. You should probably lower your expectations. Extreme hype only leads to disappointment. I'm more excited for Dark Souls, Uncharted 3 and Diablo 3. :frog:

Edit: @ The_ugly_guy_at_the_Store
I didn't find Bioshock 2 pretentious at all. It improved the gameplay and it made me actually care about Eleanor. I don't understand why so many people dislike Bioshock 2.

I agree it will be the biggest hit, certainly over the next 2 years. Over 5 years? not so sure about that.

The Witcher 2 will no doubt be very popular if it is as good as it`s currently being made out.

Capcoms huge open world RPG, Dragons Dogma, due in 2012, could well be a huge hit also and may well provide a rival for TES.

It`s looks gorgeous, promises a huge open world with masses of NPC`s populating it etc.

I reckon it`s easy to get carried away on a sea of Hype but after thinking Two Worlds 2 was going to be a fantastic huge RPG, I`m now learning to keep my feet grounded on Terra Firma.

Skyrim WILL be fantastic and keep us playing for years to come i`m sure. Will it remain the Top RPG over 5 years? I wouldn`t bet on that length of time.

Angry Birds already did that. End of discussion.

Yeah right, who am I kidding?

Skryim will definitely be the top game of the past 5 years and the future 4-5 years, depends how fast BGS makes a new TES/FO. :)

There seems to be about 4-5 years between each Elder scrolls game, im glad they are not rushing this one, They said they have been working on it since oblivion.

all a matter of opinion i suppose

Not really. If it is going to be the biggest game it is more of a fact. Best would be opinion. Saints Row is nothing in the face of Elder Scrolls. GTA maybe but Saints row is MANY rungs down.

I feel this game is actually getting underrated for just how big of a deal it will be, I think when we get closer to November the hype for this will explode. You can pretty safely know that this game will be something special like the others have been. It will get very high reviews and eeryone will be talking about if for the next couple of years.

Oblivion is still considered one of the great games even with it age.

Skyrim is going to blow everything else out of the water and will become the measuring stick for video games as the other mainly have.

The Elder Scrolls series has defined gaming eras and pushed the limits of what is possible and has remained untouchable. Follow that with all the DLC it will get and this game is a sure thing to be the biggest deal.

I'd say GTA is the only series that has the similar effect.

Ah men. I have to completely agree, no game offers what Bethesda has in stock.

These seem to be very nice titles but they have a handicap compared to Tes: they are pc-only or consoles-only. Tes has another level of magnitude because it is for pc and consoles so accessible to virtually everyone.

^^^^^^^^Just something, it is veeeryy probable that The Witcher 2 also goes out for the consoles. I don't think it has been anounced officially, but I read something somewhere (not trying to troll, I really read something but can't remember what it was) that indicated that the game was being developed thinking on the consoles too.

And regarding Skyrim, I don't know about the sales, but about the game, I hope it is the best thing to come out since Oblivion. Ever since I played Oblivion, I never found another game that immersed me so much (lol immersion) and made me feel so drawn to the game world. If Skyrim, as a TES game, manages to pull and improve that feel, then it is going to replace OB as my favourite game ever, and no doubt it will be a huge success in sales :)

I'd hardly call that a 'handicap'. Yes, they lose some sales figures, but that in no way diminishes the immanent value of the product.

I'm not talking about value in general I just speak for myself: I don't like platform exclussivity and I'm definitely not buying hardware for one or two games.

what makes minecraft, the best game I have ever played, has nothing to do with sales. but the fact that it supports a completely destructive envioronment in addition to tons of crafting and capturing my need to build things like legos used to when I was a child. they key words here is; LITERALLY INFINITE GAMEPLAY. yay!!!

yeah, the release date is pretty much the day in which the final update is put up and they stop adding stuff to the game, I doubt it will steal any consumers from SK considering by then over 80 % of the people who are going to buy it already have and on 11,11,11 they'll just be getting that last update.

You know notch has said several times that "final release" just means getting rid of the beta tag, and that they'll keep updating it as long as there is a great enough deman for it? :P

But however it depends on how many persons they have in BGS at a time too. However I'm most certain that the next TES will be on the next generation consoles and there is a chance the Fo4 will also be on next gen consoles. :)

The pretentious remake of System Shock 2? People are looking back on it not so fondly. Portal is universally acclaimed and opposition of is met with swarms of people who are fans going against it. Most people speaking against Bioshock garner maybe a small trashcan fire fight. Portal derision is an all out flame war.

OF: I wouldn't call it a "pretentious" remake of System Shock... I don't know about 2 or 3, but Bioshock was developed by the same people who developed System Shock, but couldn't continue the franchise, as it is the IP of EA, and EA decided System Shock was going to be no more. Too bad..

OT: I don't know about the "biggest hit in 5 years". If we are talking sales (which is the only real quantifiable that applies across all genres/platforms) there are other games that will probably sell more than Skyrim. Matter of fact, I don't think Skyrim is going to have close to the success of Black Ops.

If we are talking "critical accailm", that's something gaming companies usually buy, just like movie studios do come Oscar time.... every year, there are multiple GoTY's declared by devs and gaming sources alike.

If gameplay, obvioulsy that is highly subjective, but this year alone there is:
The Witcher 2
ME3
Batman AC

The biggest hit for me? Yes, sure! :tes:
I don't see any other title coming close in terms of sandbox epic adventure, or, as I like to call it, "fantasy simulator". For me there are a lot of other great games, especially rpgs, that I enjoy and preorder and play the [censored] out of, but Tes has the best return on investment (not just pecuniary investment, but also emotional).
But that's just me and my love for detailed fantasy simulation, other people don't think so high of this genre and will prefer shooters or other rpgs, more linear with deeper storytelling. The only cross-genre aggregate indicator is the sales figures, and I don't know how Tes stands in popularity worldwide.

Just because a game has a valid point to make, doesn't make it pretentious. It deserved all of it's acclaim, mainly because none of it praised the shooter aspect, which was one of the worst and most dated systems in recent memory. That it could still be so universally loved despite that, is testamate to it's strength in writing and atmosphere, and while it's differently overrated (What AAA isn't though?) I don't think it really had any unwarranted self importance.

A valid point? I.E. ripping off verbatim from a book and having people indulge in not at all subtle soliloquies to force a message down your throat not through environment, as most claim, but through endless droning dialogue that is not factual statements but forced opinion? I find that rather pretentious. They do not give you leeway to think one way or another in that game. And no, it's not because you have to kill the other guys, but because the other guys don''t make a good point at all. Compare that to, say, Half-Life 2 and you will see just how hard it fails as a piece regarding morality and government. Even though - in that game - the Combine are the enemy, you have the not so crazy Dr. Breen who's done all he could for humanity and is now at the point that he thinks what he's done is right. Andrew Ryan on the other hand is just insane, and no one would logically follow a man who cackles maniacally in your face.

Biggest hit in 5 years. While I'd be very happy if it happened, but there have been some pretty big hits in the past 5 years.
Again if sales figures are the criteria, I don't see it happening.
If reviews are the criteria then maybe, but there have been some near flawlessly reviewed games recently.

For me it is the biggest hit there is no doubt, I can't predict how well it does to the industry as a whole  All I know is I wish there were more series that offer this level of freedom.

Not to be negaitve but a few things I agree with and disagre with.
I can see most people agreeing with me, for me, Bethesda are the only developers that make you feel like your in the universe of the game.

Yes this is why I love TES games.
i still play Oblivion now, i just love the excitement we get when we are allowed to actually Role Play a character you wish to be, almost like a book, you feel as if you are exploring it yourself.

This is where I disagree with you here stronly. I didn't feel I was actually roll playing much in Oblivion. A few of the stats are more Real Life human players ability to do things instead of actual roll playing game stats. There is no way a level one person can break a level 100 lock but is possible. There is no way to fail a magic spell in Oblivon, actually you really can't fail in Oblivion, so it was more of an action game than a true roll playing game. So I wouldn't really say and "actually Role Play a character" as you said. But it is still lots of fun and a great time to be enjoyed. :)
I seriously hope they keep the unique game-play features that we all loved so much.
Thank you Bethesda, you've inspired me into all i am doing today (Modding, designing , ETC) And good luck with Skyrim!

Again what some people love, other people hate and what other people hate, other people love so hard to say what was unique game-play features we loved. I loved the Fast Travel in Oblivion, while many hate it. I hope the keep it for Skyrim, BUT others don't.

I do hope it is the biggest hit because then it will mean we will have TES VI in 5 years time to keep the franchise going. :D

Yeah it just delivers endless fun in every way. Like walking into an ayleid ruin, finding welkyed stones (wow they refill mana :0 ) Looking deeper (OMG a big shiny crystal, recharges magic items :@ ) Just makes you want to explore every nook and cranny of tamriel.

Yeah you are right, but it wasnt far from it in a gameplay perspective, compared to other games :)
And yes i agree fast travel is a good idea, but its all about offering choice to the game, yeah you could fast travel, but no one said you have to.

In my really devoted fan head it already is a big hit, I hope they make it big money wise too. Anyways I don't think a niche game like this can compete with more casual games like The Sims or Call of Duty in the sales department, and I'd lie to say I wish that kind of popularity for Tes, because I'd feel less and less special  among my gamer friends.

It BETTER be the bigges hit!

The hype is now so big, that if this game fails...

...I don't even dare to think about it...

As seen, many hyped games has failed lately. I'll take Black Ops as an example. Most hyped game, yet the worst, most crappy, badly designed and boring CoD game.

But we all know Bethesda. They're known to make fun stuff, and I too believe this will be an awesome game.

I'm just sayin'. Since the hype is big, the disappointment may be big.

And thus did I feel about starcraft 2

9 of my friends play games all the time and we've been playing games together since genesis days.
But me and one other were the only ones out of 10 that liked oblivion. I am the only one who loved it.
So in terms of popularity I don't think it's huge.

I definetely agree with the OP. Medieval fantasy + open world = goodness

Other games that come quite close are the mmorpgs but that is altogether a different story :)
