Must-have mods?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 3:17 am

I've haven't played Oblivion in about a year and a half, but since the annoucnement of Skyrim I've been wanting to go back and play through it again. The problem is, I know a metric crap-ton of mods have come out for the game and I want to play it in the best, highest resolution, updated way possible so I'm looking for maybe the top 10 oblivion mods that have really made the game better/more enjoyable. I know this is based heavily on your opinion, but I'm just looking for mods that have made the experience prettier/more updated. I have waded through previous threads and haven't found anything exactly like what I'm asking, but if there is maybe point me to the thread?

Ask 100 different Oblivion players what are the top mods they use, and you'll get 100 different answers for most of the list. In fact, there are periodic threads like that here, and we have literally no agreement on the point.

Basically, if you've read the threads as you say about what people recommend to others, you know what some of us generally like. If you want anything more specific, choose a person at random, ask for their top 10 favorites, and go with those. That'll be as close as you'll come to unanimity. ;)

You probably won't get any agreement even on whether 20 is enough. There are a lot of threads on what to do when you hit the 254 mod limit!

Just play vanilla, until you think "I don't that" and then look for the mod that fixes what you found. Most mods can be added to a game in-progress.

Agreed with the posts above, but I think most players WOULD agree that there are a few essentials.
The various Unofficial Patches and Unofficial Patch Supplementals are on virtually everyone's list; though they don't necessarily "make the game more enjoyable" they certainly make it a lot more playable and stable.
Other "essentials" that come to mind would be things like Streamline, Oblivion Stutter Remover, and possibly Kuertee's Cleanup and ArchiveInvalidationInvaliidated - a large proportion of the community uses these, and they do not actually alter gameplay.

And, I would claim that the three mods I've made (with Spiney's and kriscrash's help) are essential but I think a lot of people will disagree with me on that. ;)

If you want "the hawtness", check out the first, I dunno, half a dozen pages or so (maybe dozen, or more) of threads, in this very forum. Check in particular for WiP/WipZ, or Rel/RELz (Their Caps May Vary ;)) headings. This will give you some idea of what's going on with new, and also some rather older mods, that are receiving discussion/updates/other.

Check the top 100 or whatever it is, at the Nexus. Though, you have now been warned, there is likely to be a lot of... "sixy" stuff there, suffice it to say.

You can also search the Nexus in all kinds of useful ways, right http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/advancedsearch.php. Experiment with it; get to know it; profit. Note: partial words *do* match. Generally. Sometimes it seems a bit buggy, though that could be fixed now...

I have a feeling phoenix1213 has already covered everything, mind you. Ah well. The only other "trick" (not really) that I can think of, that probably isn't lurking between spoiler tags in the above post, is checking out the latest BOSS thread, and simply clicking links provided by those posting mod names/details so the BOSS folks can add them to the masterlist. And/or searching for them, if they souond interesting, and links are not provided, I guess. Oh, and the older BOSS threads, for even more mods. But hey, this might not appeal to you. Just something I've done now and then.

And there's load orders / mod lists, posted in various threads. You can look at those, search for whatever you like the sound of, and/or ask a question here and there. Depending on context, people mightn't mind.

Another of these thread eh?

Unlike some, I think that's just fine. Often see a few mods that I am not familiar with, that I think might be worth a look.
But as said; the short answer is that there is no "must-have" mods, it is all a matter of personal opinion.

But some come close. Namely those that 'fix' shortfalls in the game, such as:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10400
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23208
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368 (for that bashed patch, and the best mod installation method)
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27710
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11280

And some noteworthy mods in my own humble opinion:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18305 (Beautiful varied weather, not to mention the interior effects and "Real lights")

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19628
