Building characters.

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 7:20 pm

Hey, I post on this forum to ask if you guys may help me to understand how we are supposed to build our characters. I'm not lvl 20 yet but if we still gain 1 credit by level, with 20 credit it's almost the number required to buy all the universal abilities + all the abilities of a classe.
So, are we supposed to do 4 characters, 1 for each classe (wich do not make any sense with the fact that we are not able to change characters when we change classe while in a match) or hybrid-characters which do not have all the abilities of the classes but can be usefull in multiples roles without being the most optimised ?
If I wanted to play mainly ingeneer, soldier or medic I would not post to ask that because you can actually do a character with all the classes abilities for thoses classes without being useless. Ingeneer, soldier and medic are always usefull but I want to play operative, which depend of the map (yes they are usefull for hack objectives of course), depend of your mates (if you play with engineers you can controle their turrets) or you can spot enemies mines, but I don't feel useful in every situation while I play operative instead of when I play soldier.

Thanks you guys and sorry for english mistakes, not my native language ;).

It's possible to max out both the universal abilities and one class's abilities.

I feel that doing so limits your effectiveness, but that's just my opinion.

For example: I spend 5 points in universal, and divide the remaining 15 between two classes. (This could be extended to three if you want to)

Thanks you for quick responding, I think I'll try to find a mix between 2 classes like you, for exemple, as ingeneer you do not need that much credits actually, there is 3 different turrets, when you reached the 5th rank you just take the gatling one, it sound possible.
If someone can just tell me if the extra landmine ability is enough to plant two of them or if you have to take the landmine ability + the extra one to be able to do that ?

Thanks again ;).

Either. The idea is that you find what you're comfortable with to start and as you get more comfortable you take chances with other character creations and try to mix it up.

I'm only level 9, but have pretty much set my build in stone once I'm 20 because of how awesome Splash Damage set up their support classes. Just goes to show that while Universal skills trully are "universal", they are not "unirversatile". Downed Fire alone conflicts with not only the Operative but also the Medic.

I'd say dip in Universal, and then work on heavy-investment in two trees of your choice, like I did.

3 in Universal
8 in Operative
7 in Medic
2 in Engineer
(Though if you want the Gattling turret, you will HAVE to take the light and medium turrets first).

Investing in all points for Medic is a waste, since you only have three equip slots.
But this keeps you flexible enough to change based on your team, situation, AND map :)

Operative is actually quite useful though :) It's the most engaging and challenging to use to its full potential though. One trick you can always do if you feel useless is decoy and then just run around with your Homing Beacon, with the occasional command-post hack. You never know when that random red-outline will save a life :P
Plus, Cortex Bomb is fun.......... Because people keep using it on me when I'm trying to Comm Hack :(

you start with Landmine by default so, Extra Landmine will increase your max number of active mines to 2.

I am putting 6 points in Universal, and 7 in Soldier and Engineer, which i think is a nice mix, since I can't wrap my head around Operative tactics, and the Medic is pretty well set up as a Healer by default.

i'm upgrading everything but Engineer to some extent, because I'm *#&$ at being Engineer, so I'm sticking to just... doing everything else as necessary. Mostly Op/Medic, but there's times where an extra Soldier would be valuable.
