Queston on programs for installing mods

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 2:00 am

I have Oblivion GOTY and I would like to install mods. With Morrowind GOTY I used Escog, Mlox, Reordermod, MWSE 0.9.4 and 106 flawless loaded mods. I would have tried MGE but, I have not found any adequate video(s) that could demonstrate its abilities (for some of us seeing = understanding). What program(s) do I need and what order do I need to use them in order to install mods flawlessly. Thankyou

MGE was/is to me the most interesting thing about Morrowind modding. Especially since I can't stand the combat and a lot of game play mechanics. Oblivion has OBGE - much easier to use actually.

To answer your question - first a a question: Do you plan to use a lot of mods?

If no then you will probably be ok with http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2097. Get the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=32277 for more features/updates.

If yes then you are better installing with the BAIN feature of http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368. For BAIN here is my http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1084204-bain-mod-installation-projects/, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35230, http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/ (for all around help). If you are familiar with Wrye Mash then it is not such a large jump. Another factor is are you going to use a bashed patch - many mods require it. If so then Again BAIN. Right up front I'm biased toward BAIN - read my thread for why.

Those are the two main choices. Expects posts to contradict me soon.

Psymon is absolutely correct. (Sorry to contradict you, mate! ;) ) The two best utilities you've got are Wrye Bash and OBMM for installation, health of your saved games, and handling mods. The equivalent of MWSE in Oblivion is http://obse.silverlock.org/, and an excellent thing it is, too. Also extremely good is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21104, another script extender with additional features. It doesn't conflict with OBSE, either. Both add a great deal of functionality to the game, and both are perfectly safe.

And there will be contradictions to these statements coming along soon, too.

I have checked out the links and I am already depressed. I know absolutely nothing about these programs (physics and algebra to me). Unless they are demonstrated say, Youtubed (seeing = understanding) all the text in the world will do me no good. I will forget what I,m reading within ten minutes. Thankyou

That is how I feel with most morrowind tools. If it makes you feel any better.

If you are gonna use OBMM, then there's almost no reading required, it is pretty simple to use. But, this is only if you are planning on using a few mods and that do not require a bashed patch. OBMM is pretty straight forward, but don't use too many mods with it. When it comes down to mod conflicts and overwriting files, you are gonna have a hard time.

BAIN does require a little bit more reading, but don't get overwhelmed by all the guides. I felt that way too when I first saw BAIN and its guides, but at the end, BAIN is not that complicated once you get the hang of it. It is pretty simple, only thing that is time consuming is to convert complex mods into BAIN-ready files, but most mods nowadays are already in this format. After that it is just install, check, and use the bashed patch. Nowadays BAIN has become a simple tool to use for me.. Use the pictorial guide, it is only pictures and pretty simple. Other than that there are no other pictorial guides that I know of, everything else is written. Psymon's links are the way to go. You just need to experiment a little and have patience.
