My Oblivion Modding Guide

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 6:51 am

So after I wrote my http://knotstheinane.blogspot.com/p/morrowind-modding-guide.html I started working on an Oblivion guide and this is what I've come up with. I'm not as satisfied with it as with my Morrowind one, so I'd like some input from the community on where I can do better and if I am missing anything.

The main guide is here: http://knotstheinane.blogspot.com/p/oblivion-modding-guide.html!
The main guide links to two sub-guides that deal with super specific things: http://knotstheinane.blogspot.com/2011/03/quick-dirty-guide-to-wrye-bash.html & http://knotstheinane.blogspot.com/2011/03/optimizing-oblivion.html.

I'd like critique on all three of these pages please.

Well the optimization section is filled with outdated mods - most people today use PyFFI and do it themselves.

Have you seen http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/? Not trying to discourage you it is just that a lot of this kind of thing has been done.

I had not seen POSitive, and it seems like an excellent resource.

I've been lurking for quite a long time and the purpose of my TES guides is mostly to stay "cutting edge" about TES game graphics enhancers. Developments in things like MGE and OBGE happen regularly, and new texture replacers come out that look better than anything that has come before. I've found that most guides seem to be very slow about updating their lists of graphics replacers. I've also tried to keep "hand holding" to a MAXIMUM so that anyone can complete my guide start to finish coming in without knowing anything about Oblivion modding before.

Game optimization and "How to use the Bashed Patch" is not the focus on my guide, that is why the sections are so brief. My target audience is graphics enthusiasts that have the resources to spare.

A fellow named Palidoo is also working on a graphics focused guide - maybe you guys could collaborate.

Still I believe most here will tell you that Oblivion Optimization and Distant Land max are known to contain errors and advise against their use.

Thank you for the advice, Psymon.

I use Pyffi myself, and while it seems fairly easy to me I know from experience I will need to explain it in my guide if I am going to recommend it even though the documentation is top notch. But it seems there is no way around it, I certainly don't want to be recommending mods with errors in them.
