Why register your age to view trailer

Can somebody try with negative numbers please.

Love to do that, will try it on this
On websites where date of birth don't matter, I put something like November 28, 9284. It then tells me and everyone else I am -7,274 years old.
Will try that on the video :D
Edit: On all of the videos I could find the lowest age was 2004, none had imput your own :( If anyone has a link to one that is imput your own, I would love to try it

This is why www.escapistmagazine.com asks for your date of birth:

Why are you asking for my birthday?
For some events, promotions, or content we are asked to limit access to users of a certain age by the event sponsor or content owner. This usually, but not always, involves a game that has been rated M by the ESRB or 18 by PEGI, a movie that has been rated R by the MPAA, or some other content that has otherwise been designated as appropriate for mature audiences only.

What do you do with this information?
When you enter your birthday in the field above, we store it in a temporary cookie on your computer. It expires when your browser closes, and we do not record this information or use it for any other purpose.

I've put in my birthday before, why do I have to do it again?
The guidelines for handling age gates require that we save your information for your current session only. Unfortunately this means that you'll have to enter your birthday again to see this content after your close your web browser. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

Perhaps other sites share the same reason.

All that to state the simple reality of:

Lawyers, probably. :(

'Lawyers' is likely a misplacement of the issue. If they didn't put it then the responsibility is on them if someone's child watches it, putting the year of birth thing on reduces their accountability. So it's not exactly 'lawyers', it's just law itself

It seems to be a pretty common thing with video game related websites. Usually, it happens if the game is rated M, or has not been rated yet but has content that may warrant an M rating, as is the case with Skyrim (When asked on the subject, Todd Howard said Bethesda isn't aiming for a specific rating, but he believes the game is likely to be rated M.) So they ask to make sure you're of an appropriate age before viewing it, and to be fair, the trailer does have some amont of blood, which is one of the factors that can raise a game's rating, so it's not like it doesn't have anything in it that might be deemed inappropriate for children.

It seems kind of pointless to me since there's nothing stopping minors from falsely claiming that they're of appropriate age, but I guess it's a legal thing, so that Bethesda can't be held responsible if parents catch they're children viewing such content, I'd argue that when simply given false information that no one will actually know is false is enough to allow you to see the content in question despite not being of appropriate age, it loses its meaning, but then again, I'm not in a position to decide those things.

Only 99 year old, I wrote 1001 as year of birth making me 1010 years old.
Can somebody try with negative numbers please.
Yeah, I always put 11/11/1111, tried putting the year 999 once and didn't accept it. Guess it thought that was too old to be possible. :( lol

Because people in the United States people think that the inconsistent and [censored] rating system helps children by sheltering them.

EDIT: The censoring on my post is a prime example of how the rating system is terrible. The definition of the word that is censored means "to be held back." But because it's not "politically correct," it's now a bad word.

Yea, we should just sit kids down and show them videos of corpses, murder, and dismemberment

Interesting point of view. As bizarre as that sounds, it'd definitely not shock me if someone was to collect marketing demographics in such a manner. You have to wonder about all the falsified data though. So many kids must put 1932 or something far out. All of that data would need to be purged.

i alway put 1/1/1900 :) i get so sick of those stupid things. if they are going to bug me everytime then im going to screw up their data. also cause if i used my real birthdate only 1 number is used more than once so its more work.

Your logic is flawed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfJrFdiGqXs&feature=related. There a corpse, [was] murder, and dismemberment. You're going to say "that's nature, so it's okay."

But wait. Nature is the cycle of life. Corpses, murder, and dismemberment is a part of the cycle of life. We humans are part of that cycle of life. To shelter children from corpses, murder, and dismemberment is sheltering them from reality. You having a problem with the above mentioned is a given; it's natural for you to want to avoid corpses, murder, and dismemberment. But don't be foolish and try to live in a fantasy world where it does not exist.

Those aren't humans. Humans are above nature. Showing children images/videos of humans maiming and murdering each other would desensitize them to it. Not to say that they would end up DOING those things, just that it effects their psyche. I figured it was pretty obvious that I wasn't talking about animals. I don't really have a problem with the current level of videogame violence either. I was just remarking that it's ridiculous to say flat out that partial-censorship is bad

I imagine that is why I can shoot laser with my eyes or survive a free fall of 1000ft while not needing to eat ever. Oh, wait, I can't.

If that was actually about those lions eating an Ostrich, remember that phrase the next time you meet a butcher or buy meat (if you actually eat it, I imagine you do). Or when you see in the news that someone killed a guy for a shiny stone or a piece of paper. Or for a black liquid that smells. Or for an invisible mute entity that he decided it was worth killing for (even if that supposingly existent invisible mute entity never actually expressed any wish whatsoever).

The reason why they ask your age is simply to avoid lawsuits from certain kinds of people or organizations. They have to adhere to certain norms of society if they want to continue to exist, even if those norms are unfounded.

How is it Censorship? The game content is isn't censored at all, it's just blocked for anyone under the age of 17 to prevent legal issues for the company. Censorship would be blurring, bleeping or totally removing something from the game.
