Oblivion and lossless music?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 6:36 am

Hi,

I was really surprised to find this topic nowhere on the internet (perhaps I'm the only one caring hehe), so I decided to start this thread.
First of all, I'm not really into modding at all but I am really fond of Oblivion's soundtrack. I have the original soundtrack in lossless wma format, so it would be nice to have that run in the game (instead of the relatively poor 192kb mp3's).
Unfortunately, it's not just a matter of copying and renaming. Apparently Oblivion only handles mp3 for music natively.

So the question is, is there any way to get any lossless format working with Oblivion? I've tried to change some things on the surface, but without any effect...
I hope someone can help me out!

It would require modifying the game code - Something that is not done easily. You'll have to settle for 320kbps CBR mp3 files. Although, you could try using uncompressed PCM files too - I doubt it'd work but it's worth a shot. You might have to edit the INI to modify of the settings that dictate the file extension for the game music files (If I recall correctly, there should be one).

I was already fearing that it would be close to impossible.. I did the things you mentioned. I converted all the files to 320 CBR (also tried a higher bitrate, but it didn't work). I also tried the PCM wave files. oblivion_default.ini doesn't seem to have a setting related to music files. I found one interesting part:
SFileTypeGame=mp3

But indeed, changing it to wav has no effect...

Changing the Default ini does nothing. You need to alter the one in My Games\Oblivion.

How stupid! :/
In any case, the result is the same. The ini only allows you to specify the main theme specifically. Changing the SFileTypeGame setting doesn't do anything either.
