The objective is to spread the word about Skyrim, and generate hype. They want the video to be seen by as many people as possible. AKA More sales

To understand a marketing demo its like seeing lady gaga with only a quarter of her makeup on and finding out she looks like a deranged trucker with mange.... And not concentrating on the bits that are actualy nearly complete.

Years? How long in advance did they announce it? RAGE comes out two months before Skyrim, so i'm curious.

Because if they did that our heads would explode. we cant handle that much awesome at one time. there must be a SLOW buildup or risk overload.

I could be wrong but wasn't there a trailer involving footage from the actual game?

That's not the impression I got from the preview articles.

this is the best i could do from wikipedia
The game was first shown as a tech demo on June 11, 2007, at Apple's WWDC,[3] and was officially announced on August 2, 2007, at QuakeCon. On the same day, a trailer for the game was released by Gametrailers.com

so i guess it was simultaneous
video and announcement

Thanks. I'm wondering about non trailer gameplay videos though. They've been releasing them lately for RAGE. I wonder when the first was released.

i guess this is sort of my point
the video was just walking around a small area for a minute or so
why not show us one of those?
whats the difference between that and a screenshot

the trailer is gameplay footage but its not really from the players perspective
i would be very pleased if the video was just the player standing in one position rotating his view slowly while things happen around him
call it a dynamic screenshot or something

show some life to the world
surely the game is completed enough for this

I don't know about the rest of you but I've got somewhere shy of seven months to wait on this piece. That's enough time to forget about anything, like even the end of the world. If they decided to split that duration with this holy grail of a gameplay vid, that'd be quite swell with me.

You're apparently not a marketing expert if you can't see the genius of what they are doing right now. They have us hooked. And they damn well know it.
There is nothing that they could do that would make people not buy this game at this point. They have a handle on it, trust me. But whether or not you believe that is irrelevant, facts are facts, this game is going to sell, and they know it.
The fact that you made this thread pretty much proves my point lol. You're hooked. They have you on their site, you want more info, and you will buy their game.
Hook, line, and sinker?

Game still not finished, and as such if we the comunnity would get his hands on that preview right now,we wouldnt see the amazing game Skyrim is preparing to be,we would only find the ridiculous little tiny flaws everyone complains in here about and then instead of the mess that was this monday with complaints here the TES forums would go down with all the bickering about the video missing every possible combination of races/genders,armors/weapons,all the crafts, guilds, shouts, weapon magical effects, not having Crysis graphics....

Yeah, this. It would be bad marketing. They don't really want a lot of folks to see the unfinished game in a video that's not so well prepared. When so many people would look it every small bad detail would be seen, especially if the video was looked in slow motion. Some comments would be like this: "Did you see that? At point 12:34 when we saw a quarter of a second of the inventory screen it looked very bad. I'm not going to buy this game."

The E3 video is going to be much better prepared for everyone to see, even in slow motion.

Slower speed? A video that can be downloaded to your computer can be slowed down and stopped whenever you want. The press that looked at the gameplay video didn't have an option to stop it whenever they wanted to look for bad details.

Remember before the Gameplay trailer, when they showed off all those pictures.... Well soon after when the Trailer came out, they showed all those pictures again but as gameplay... If im right, they are doing a special Exclusive showing of Skyrim tomorrow.... Since they've just showed these new pictures, maybe they'll show some more tomorrow....
