Armor Style

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 1:33 am

New pics show the armor style has evolved a bit from oblivion. Other than elven, can't really see anything I would describe as "oh that's steel armor" or "oh that's chainmail".

Also, everything is looking awesomely primitive. You really get the feeling tamriel is in a dark age.

So I guess my question is, is the armor variety going to be more faction driven than material driven? Raider armor vs, iron or leather. You're thoughts on art direction, armor style ect ect.

Armor looks epic, no doubt. Everyone is going to cry about how its lower res than the characters faces, or this or that, but put simply some of the nicest armor I've seen in TES series. Oblivion armor was meh most times, particularly since it was limited in comparison to MW, and MW had a bunch of different types but obviously since it came out a while ago the armor wasn't really all that attractive. Hopefully we see general types of armor (fur, iron, etc) but some specialty (yet common) armor (guild sets and such).

I think visually everyone will be for the most part satisfied. (It would be nice to see improvements made on some of the foliage textures though :) )

Mixing and matching different armor styles always seems to add realism to characters. The majority of the armor I've seen appears more subdued and part of the figure as well, which is great. Aside from faction driven, how about necessity, availability, or aesthetically driven armor? I'll take 'em all.

I'm curious as to what the orcs armour is. It looks orc-like, although more Mordor than Tamriel orcs, but we have also seen a concpet of orc armour that looked wuite different.

Looks to me like we've seen Iron, Steel, Elven, Leather, and one of the faction armors.

The Imperial Legion as we knew it is gone. There's still an "empire" but it's very weak in comparison to what we knew before. Though the Roman appearance leads me to believe it belongs to a guard/soldier of Titus Mede's army rather than one of the Nordic families' armies.

I think the tone and theme of Skyrim will affect the way armor looks more than anything else. Unless it's clearly foreign armor (elvish, orc, dwarven, etc), everything we see will likely be very primitive, low-grade, and brutal.

I'm pumped for that. Oblivion was pretty blandly European.

It's hard to say too much about the armor at this time, but judging from the last interview with Todd Howard, I think Bethesda is trying to make the armor feel more culturally diverse (He said that they designed the armor with the assumption that the common materials were local items whereas the exotic types were made elsewhere.) and I can believe that.

The elven armor I'd say is an improvement over Oblivion, and while somewhat different in style, I'd say it's close enough that I can certainly believe it's elven, and I'm guessing that the armor that the player character has been shown wearing is some form of leather or fur. As for the possible legion armor, I suspect that's what it is, or its equivalent, as the person wearing it looks like a guard. What the Khajiit is wearing might be steel or iron, I'm leaning towards iron since it looks a little rusty, although it's somewhat different from what I'd expect from those materials in past games, being as it's not full plate, that may be because of the stylistic differences of Skyrim. In any case, it definitely looks like metal. As to what the orc is wearing, I'm honestly not sure, I might say orcish, though I'm not really certain if I'd make the connection if it wasn't an orc wearing it. It doesn't really look that similar to the orc armor concept art to me, though I couldn't see that picture clearly enough to judge it in detail. Whatever the case, it's definitely some form of heavy armor, and looks a little on the crude side, though to be fair, that seems to fit Skyrim.

Whatever these armor's are, I'll welcome the greater sense of cultural diversity we seem to be seeing in Skyrim's designs compared to Oblivion.

I love the armor. It almost reminds me of the marauder's armor in WAR, meaning I'll be a step closer to creating an awesome looking follower of Chaos :chaos:

I really dig the Khajiit's armor. It looks like armor is strictly "leather" or chainmail" since the armor looks to have bits
of leather and such. I have super high hopes for the new armor types, and on top of that being able to enchant them :foodndrink:

As long as there are a lot of pieces that look decent when mixed and matched, it works for me.

^^ This.

I am hoping they are going to introduce much more armors on a level instead of the old system of just working through them until you just get to the best. I want more variety to be able to custom your character without taking a compromise for crappy armor.

The Khajiit armor in that pic looks really cool. I bet is just the low class armor you get at the beginning though.
