Streamline appears to be giving me CTDs

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 6:00 am

Whenever Streamline streamsaves I get a crash to desktop. It is odd because I have had Streamline running for about 4 hours of play time now (I just re-installed Oblivion) and the streamsaves have been fine. It saves every 10 minutes for up to 15 saves (the default) if that is important. Any help would be greatly appreciated, since I love the Streamsave feature and I would hate to disable it.

Here is my load order:

I would look at deactivating UL and reducing background Windows processes before I gave up StreamSave. You can always try reduced spawn rates, and playing with the graphics settings.
The whole idea behind Streamsave is to have a few saves to fall back on when you do get a CTD.

I had that for a while, which was very annoying - and frustratingly enough I'm not sure what fixed it really either. I removed a bunch of mods and cleaned some others with TES4EDit. Anyway, try setting SLv.PurgeBeforeSave to 0 as the purge before save is known to cause CTDs for some. I always use it so it wasn't that in my case. Also, if using OBGEv2 you can try http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1165399-ctd-on-save/page__view__findpost__p__17139394 and disable the option to save your shader data when saving (it's bSaveData in the OBGE.ini, which is in the same folder as Oblivion.ini). That said, it wasn't that in my case either.

Once upon a time my game was insanely crash-happy for a loooong time until I finally figured out that it was Streamline. I don't know your particulars, but for me it was always outside. I found that the culprit was the Streamsmooth module. Streamsmooth adjusts various things in real time like your graphical level of detail, viewable distance of objects, etc. as a means to keep your FPS consistent. A brilliant tool in concept. But for me, while outdoors, Streamsmooth I think would be making so many adjustments so fast that it overloaded the processing limit of the game, which made one more small thing (like one more Actor entering your area, or saving your game) easy to become the straw that breaks the camel's back and send you to the desktop.

When I disabled the Streamsmooth module, my crashes stopped. After that I just settled for a manual selection of graphical settings like normal. I kept the rest of Streamline because it's a great program.

This was a long time ago and more recent versions of Streamline might not do this, so I could be talking about ancient history.

The CTDs I was getting were all in Vilverin and the Imperial Marketplace, so UL most likely had nothing to do with it.

I set SLv.PurgeBeforeSave to 0* and that seemed to fix the crashing, so thank you for that, but now when I load a Streamsave I'm running in slow motion, and I am unable to stop running. I disabled bSaveData* and that caused me to load every single Shader whenever I loaded a save, so I'm enabling bSaveData again. Any ideas as to why I am running in slow motion when I load a Streamsave?

*As a sidenote, my ini changes don't appear to do anything.... When I first started to get CTDs from Streamsave I tried to disable it from the Streamline ini, but that didn't have any effect (yes, I saved the ini) so I had to use the in game menu to make the changes, and that worked. It is the same thing with OBGE, all changes that I make have to be done from the in game menus which is annoying.

You do have FCOM-Cobl in your Load Order and Drop Lit Torches is included in OOO You can free up one slot by using the version included in OOO, and You do not need FCOM-Cobl, the only reason to include the OOO 1.32-Cobl is for the Cobl options for OOO.
I mentioned UL as a candidate for removal so Oblivion will not have too many active processes running at once. If you are using Oblivion Stutter Remover, you need to make it and StreamSmooth maintain the same FPS range.
I placed the two links in my signature because the first is a site I use for reference alot, and the second link is to the current FCOM Convergence and UFCOM release thread.

Try making a clean save w/o Streamline and then activate it again. That said, that issue is usually the result of a joystick or controller plugged into the computer:

Solution: This is often the result of a joystick or controller plugged into the computer. Editting the Oblivion.ini may correct this issue. The Oblivion.ini file is located in the My Documents\My Games\Oblivion directory. In the [Controls] section, change the “bUse Joystick=1” setting to “bUse Joystick=0” or simply disconnect the peripheral. Make sure the settings are saved. Note, changes to the Oblivion.ini file will not be saved if Oblivion in running when the changes are made

You need to reinitialize via the ingame menu for the ini changes to take effect.
