How Important Should Companions Be?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 1:06 am

If I can find a cute Bosmer to lend me some sniper support, then I shall have an companion. Otherwise I don't need them. The occasional quest companion is fine, but no FONV companions and companions quest for me.

Or a gorgeous Breton healer...

hmmmmm.....a physically attractive Bosmer you say? Sure, I'd go for it.

I love companions, to be able to create my own fellowship of epic warriors that, if they have a backstory, can create a relationship to thru my character, just like in Dragon Age or in New Vegas.
Have one two-handed wielding Orc
A Khajit expert marksman
And a Elf mage.

Not if there as annoying as the champion fan bloke. i killed him so many times yet he came back........ and he wouldnt even fight the little [censored].
id like companions with a story behind them. and maybe companions would be more like friends commenting on things you do? it can get awfull lonely trecking around cyrodill

Think they should definitely be optional, but well implemented in a way that it doesn't burden you by constantly having to worry about them jumping you your way when you bring your axe down on someone. I also wouldn't mind each companion to have some character depth. A background if you will.

For me I prefer fewer companions that have rich personalities.

I almost never used oblivion companions (mods) because they (most) had no personality.

I like the way Bioware handles companions.

I'm sneaky and companions really don't fit into that way of life. I would love a dog but I would probably find myself worrying about him too much. :nope:

As far as i remember, Todd said that companions in Skyrim(so far at least) will be quite simple, but numerous.

I like companions, but I didn't really start using them in Oblivion until I installed FCOM. Vanilla Oblivion usually had one or two monsters spawning at a time so companions were somewhat redundant until you got to a really high level. With FCOM, there can be huge groups at one time or extremely powerful enemies, so I usually take a few homemade ones of different classes along using Companion Share and Recruit so that I can order them around without so much dialogue. Taking a party of 4 adventures into some forgotten tomb to kill some powerful undead feels really epic, which is why I'm hoping they'll opt for more spawns rather than increased HP.

So if they do have bug groups spawning and an okay companion control system, I'll use em.

I personally never liked or used companions unless its really pet-like, like dogmeat or ed-e or rex

Vilja/Julan, anyone?

Yes thats great example of awesome companions with deep and well done characters, with back story, quest lines, reaction on certain events but there is problem they are created by modders, Devs try evade such well made companionship in TES by some reason.
If Skyrim will have Companions system more likely the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tribunal:Calvus_Horatius or pets like in FO, or temporal companions who will follow player to certain point in quests, or featured similar to
CM partners (template companion who will join to player after certain disposition check)
or Dracandros' Voice (template companion who will join to player after reaching certain Rank in guild)

I'm hoping for New Vegas type companions, optional and not necessary for the story, but they compliment it and have their own personal quest and opinions. I doubt thats what we'll get though because when they've had the opportunity to discuss companions they didn't exactly big up anything along those lines.
